MMOs have been around now for over twenty years. In that time the genre has influenced countless game play models and designs. You can say that MMOs really did grow up with the Internet itself. In the 2000s we saw a batch of MMOs hit success as World of Warcraft grew into a world power. Now in the 2010s games have morphed and the ideas of MMOs have changed, but more are coming and they begin with Fallout 76.

24 players per map does not a MMO make and we really need to leave off with the concept that these games incorporate some sort of features unique to MMORPGs like WOW, EQ, or DAOC.
My guess is at least 80% of the features in WOW can be found in either other OMG!s or even single player games.
What sets WOW apart the most is it's first two letters, Massively Multiplayer with no other qualifier or feature necessary.
FO76, Destiny 2, GW1, Fortnite (ANET correctly calls it a CORP) are not MMOs, never were, never will be.
New World will likely be one of the first MMO survival games but I'm sure I'll be having debates with some over why it's not a MMORPG.
I'll be playing FO76 as I've never really played a smaller scale OMG, nor shooter so it should be interesting.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
with expectations low i fear F76 will be more of the same toxic players and massive bugs. sorry to say ill wait until it is out a year and on sale....
I betaed ESO and avoided buying it but after it showed much improvement I bought it and found it much improved.
b) no.
FO76 won't be a flop, but I don't think it will be an insane game changer.
To usher in or herald a new renaissance of MMORPGs it will take Oculus Rift with controllers coming down to $150 total, PCs with 1080Tis being about $500 total for entire rig, and a VRMMO. Then the trifecta will be complete because we will be back to a 1999 scenario where the entire ecosystem is something brand new, never seen before, never experienced before.
I don't believe that a sit down in front of a keyboard and mouse type of MMO, no matter how different, can usher in or herald a monumental shift in the way we saw for the launch of WoW in 2004 or Everquest in 1999.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WOW declined long ago from being much of a MMORPG, saw that when I briefly returned for Cataclysm and most were leveling in dungeon instances despite an entirely revamped world.
Better to recall what WOW was from 2004 - 2006 before BC started down the road to decline.

Sorry to say that, but this article definitely smells a little like click bait to advertise FO76.
Maybe Bless was onto something.

This hasn't been the case since world quests were introduced with Legion. Between people leveling and doing world quests, the main world is always heavily populated and active.
