    Yikes.

Why does this foolish thread get so many answers ?

A game like this takes half a decade to make, likely longer. The game started development in 2014, as we all know thanks to the kickstarter. So if they release in 2019, they would actually be EARLY, relative to the usual times.

We dont usually know about games until they are close to release. Thats why usually games are released "quicker". This is however impossible if you need a kickstarter to make the game. Duh !

I bet the same OP would whine endlessly if they released in current state, half finished.

And about the game, I hope they do the sensitive thing and release it when its done, and not a day earlier. Thats how you make a good game.

Regardless its going to be group focused with a PvP flair, two things the 'modern' MMO crowd isnt all that into. it will be niche at best and will more than likely flounder around for awhile and eventually disappear. Unless by some miracle of miracles they can develop content fast enough to keep their fanbase engaged, and if they do that theyll be the first company to ever do it.
Well I am sure they will have a PvP server at release but you do know this is otherwise a PvE game.
Thats why I said 'flair'. I mean theyre claiming its going to be a 'sand box' game. The catch all definition everyone was excited over years ago when they first announced this thing. So to be 'sand box' it has to have PvP in it somewhere. Or at least the possibility of PvP.

But more than likely all a sales pitch and this thing will be like evry other game out there which is gear focused and everyone will be grinding to get the best gear, which in a non PvP atmosphere doesnt make any sense.

Its why 'raiding' is useless now. USED to be you HAD to get gear to progress. now everyone just face rolls content and grinds encounters to win their lottery spot. If you can do the content WITHOUT the gear then why would you WANT the gear? And if people think doing the same dungeon 2 or 3 times a week on a shedule is somehow 'fun' then I dont know what to tell them. But some people are still brainwashed that way. Most arent thats why MMOs are, as I keep saying, are dead.
A "Sand Box" game does not have to have PvP .
This is the definition of a sand box game:

    """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Definition - What does Sandbox mean?

A sandbox is a style of game in which minimal character limitations are placed on the gamer, allowing the gamer to roam and change a virtual world at will. In contrast to a progression-style game, a sandbox game emphasizes roaming and allows a gamer to select tasks. Instead of featuring segmented areas or numbered levels, a sandbox game usually occurs in a “world” to which the gamer has full access from start to finish.

A sandbox game is also known as an open-world or free-roaming game

    """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

Of course Pantheon is not a sandbox MMORPG. They said it may have some elements of a sandbox style game in it but I sure that will be very limited.

No where in the definition do I see the term "PvP" .

In "early" EQ, you didn't have to get gear in raids to progress. Of course it helped to have the better gear and if you did them long you would have the gear anyway. To us raids were big social events where you got together with a bunch of friends and go do a raid zone. We always hope some rare item(s) would drop that some one could use. It was like an online party. We joked and clowned around and had fun. We did ok I guess as we had some server firsts on some of the raids.

In early EQ, not that many max level people were around so often, I might do a raid  two or three times a week if another group was short of people.

Of course I admit that we all wanted to have the best gear just because it was the best gear. Not because we really had to have it.

Yes, our old buddy there has this idea that he is some sort of gaming insider.

I have seen nothing published (I must admit, I did not look hard) on a release date for that title. I am sure a certain Rabbit would have made several posts about it had an actual (or another ) release date been announced.

This post was entertaining.  My two favorite parts:

    1)  Pantheon will get their money from stupid people and then dump it to a company that no longer exists.  I really love that you noted that the people who will buy a game and enjoy it are 'stupid' and not the one suggesting they will sell it to a non-existent company.  And if you mean Daybreak, that's even more ridiculous because there isn't barely anyone there that was during SOE days.

    2) The creators of the game that launched the genre and truly made it a 'thing' are the worst thing to happen to MMOs.   I actually started laughing at this one.  How dare they make a game that millions enjoyed, no, became obsessed with.  What horrible guys to create a beautiful IP that people chomp at the bit for the next installment.  Darn them for creating a game that was once good enough to sustain it through exceptional mismanagement 20 years later.   Grrrr those bad bad men.

This game has been in production forever. Brad is great at setting high expectations and then not hitting any of them. He is a sell out to the MMO community. Look at what he has done in the past. He sold out Everquest, Sold out Vanguard (firing the whole team in a parking lot and not even man enough to show up) saying SOE would not be involved and then selling out to SOE again, this game has been in production for what 5 years or so now with a release date of 2020? Seriously? It's vaporware. If it is released it will be crap and unfinished. They will get their money from those stupid enough to buy it and they will dump it to SOE most likely (if not before hand).

I always find it interesting so see peoples views why one should or shouldn't support a game. Funnily enough VG is exactly why i am interested in Pantheon - for me Brad's 'epic failure' was the most enjoyable mmo i have played in the last decade, and one that managed to keep me playing for longer than other mmos ever manage.
So as long as the game sees release, even if it is a disappointment it will likely be more enjoyable for me than anything else out or upcomung.

This game will get released, just like Vanguard did with a host of issues.  Soon as the money runs out a half-finished game will suddenly appear on steam or some other hosting site.

Never looked at Vanguard that way,
It sounds like you played it a lot, probably more than me, however I played it a ton too.

All it needed if to be coded better and finished and it would have been a WoW killer :)

Vanguard is the new SWG I guess. Everyone played it yet it crashed and burned. I was there for the last 3-4 months the servers were up and going (AFTER they said they were closing it for good and the nostalgia should have kicked in) in the very beginning there were maybe 20 people then a month before it ended there were 1-2 people on (including me) on the last day less than 100 people showed up.

Funny how dozens, hundreds and thousands of people all played these games. If half the people played them (especially as hardcore as some claim) they wouldnt have ever shut down.....

I was subbed up to the day they announced its closing. Then that was that.

    Canceled.

I would still be playing but that private server that someone made is very laggy for me and it's just not workable.

I would have agreed with you when Brad had misappropriated the funds but he is no longer able to do that and the game has been coming along albeit slowly but there has been a lot of progress and I think 2020 or 2021 we might see the game.

I really do believe the game will release and it will see a small population that will include people like me who want to play another Everquest very much. I do not know what rock you crawled out of but I suggest you should go right back under it as you clearly have ignored all the updates the game has been receiving and the videos on youtube.

so he did misapropriated the funds once? that is a hell of trusting on someone you don't know, any sane person wouldn't trust someone like that ever again

Same thing happens in sports.  Atlanta Fulton County Stadium held 52,007 for baseball, yet people in Atlanta have heard a million accounts of fans at Hank Aaron's 715 game (April 8, 1974).

So fun some fanboys coming on the internet saying VG has been the best mmo ever. I was ALONE on VG for YEARS. ALONE. Where have you been fanboys ? Not online. I was Completely ALONE on KOJAN, Alone on Qhalia, Alone on thestra. I was ALONE on SWG, could see 4/5 players on the cantina. So funny, players whinning about the best mmo ever AFTER the end. Never when the game is online; So I won't take a sub to Pantheon because I payed enough for born dead video games. I keep my money now, for a new pc or an XBOX one + serious games as FF14 or TESO or even BDO. not for another fail. I payed for War online, I payed for VG,  for H1Z1, for Landmark, for Albion online, I payed for repopulation, for SOTA, for SWg, for fallen earth. Now it's over bank is closed. I won't pay another cent for no AAA+ games.

Whether Pantheon makes it or it doesn't has yet to be seen. Brad and his team have the talent to make it happen. I'm hoping that Pantheon makes it, but like everything else.. the world wont end if it doesn't.

Well to say they have the TALENT is a debate initself.
For one SOE folded up shop and Vanguard folded up shop,so what are we basing ideas on here,EQ1,when there was literally NO competition?

Yes we can all agree they have ENOUGH talent to make A GAME,weather that game is HQ...good enough, meets standards of 2018 "whatever that may be"to me that is technical wise as other devs seem to think ARPG's are HQ and these 1990 puny character, locked camera devs think their games are good as well.

Do i think they have the talent, yes sir,do i think we will fully see that talent on display,no sir.
What i expect to see is a HQ INDIE game, meaning better than pretty much any other mmorpg Indie game.Does that mean good enough...barely,i want to see better than good enough.

The reason i consider Wow rash is because NONE of the games systems are really good,it is imo a game full of half ass mediocre ideas.I want to see MANY of the systems advance mmorpg's,i want to see a LOT of the game in a state where i can say ...hmm nice looks good,i want to play that.

Rehashing Wow clones or EQ1 clones is NOT going to cut it for me.Now if yo uwant to give me EQ1 2.5 then yeah sure, might be good enough, but i don't want EQ1 1.1 or 1.5,it has to be quite a bit better.

SOE folded up long after Brad had left. Yes Vanguard was a flop, but I truly believe that was due to Sony forcing release early to generate revenue.

As for Clones.. Isn't every game out there simply a Clone of the some previous game. They take good parts and try to make it better. I don't think there is anything ground breaking that could be done with current technology that would change the game. Sure a VR game like Ready Player One would do it, but we aren't there yet.

The best we can hope for now is a Game that is enjoyable to play. Anything more is just a bonus.

Actually Sony sold SOE as a going concern, the new owners renamed it Daybreak Games. DBG continues to do business and has definitely not folded up.

does the OP truly claim to know the history of brad with SOE and Vanguard? Why does noone take in to account why Vanguard actually flopped? oh lets see, because MICROSOFT abandoned the project and left the dev team without funding.. So brad BEGGED SoE to help save the project... he got 6 months of funding when he needed a years plus.. they rushed to release vanguard.. they have said time and time again that this game will be released when its ready, not because of a rush.. Say what you will about his alleged "drug problems" and disrespect for fellow employees if you want to fall back on those stories.. But at the end of the day brad didnt run SOE or Vangaurd in to the ground.  He is just the one thats left to blame for it all, so you do.

Oh and by the way, five years in development is a fairly standard time for an MMO, ESPECIALLY with a small indie team like VR has...

Fact is, he promised to deliver a functional game by a certain date and he missed it by a large margin, so much so Microsoft decided to cut their losses and SOE made sure they couldn't lose either.

Common problem in game development, bad estimating, forced schedules, incomplete games shoved out the door too early or....development going on and on with no real delivery date in sight.

Heck of a way to run a railroad.
