Keep in mind, my guess is few game "journalists" are formally educated and professionally trained in their craft (are their schools of game journalism these days?).
Most are just gamers who decide to take up a keyboard and write so it's not surprising many aren't of a higher caliber.
Of course I'm not referring to any of the staff here, I hold them in the highest regard.
Well, maybe not Tim, but only because I rarely understand what he writes, perhaps its above my reading level or something.

Like he says, just read the language. Look at how these people, who write articles FOR US [hence GAMING journalism], think of the gaming community.
Not everyone in games media is like that. Don't paint with such a broad brush. Thanks.
It's pretty tiring always seeing aspersions cast at the thing that I actually do for a profession. It's like saying all people who post on forums are jerks. I know that's not true and don't say things like that because it's hurtful.

Not true... But woefully close to the truth (the jerks part).
I don't know. I find it terribly ironic that people come stomping into a GAME SITE FORUM and castigate the very people who provide the space and opportunity for them to talk about games with other fans and besmirch the staff that tries to keep the site running. It's mean and, frankly, unkind, something my parents taught me not to be.
It's lucky for Mr. YouTube that he can throw stones in glass houses and up his followers to sap more money out of them...but that's not "games journalism" so I guess it's OK.
That said, leaving the thread. It makes my head hurt.

Your right that not all games media are bad, and its a vocal few that are absolute cancer. personally I believe none of the mmorpg staff are this and I commend you for staying away from the worse of it.
but the biggest issue with gaming journalist(actually with journalist as a whole) is they don't call out there own for wrong behavior. look at the jessica price incident...the gaming media defended absolute vile behavior. its like some weird freakish cult. there is no self policing or oversight
Forum goers while toxic at times...do have lines we don't cross and will jump on others that do. we do to some extent police ourselves. for example the Warcraft writer that was getting death threats.... the vast majority supported her and spoke out against those idiots.

I'll have you know I've worked very hard these many years to obtain (and maintain) my forum "jerk" status here.
I also excluded the staff here you will note, despite their continual confusion over what a MMO / MMORPG actually is.
Jerk status successfully reconfirmed for yet another day.

I actually don't find you a jerk on the forums, just snarky as hell but always intelligent and posting good content.
For the thread: Nonetheless, I think it is human nature for people to paint with a super wide brush. I think default settings for most people are to be dumb and paint with super wide brush.
I grew up in a household where a particular group was antagonized openly and I learned not to paint a wide brush because it is just not true, people love to point out outliers and make it as the norm because it justifies their hate or feelings towards them.

Watching the "normal" media doesn't give me much confidence that that fancy journalism school does society a whole lot of good, either. That some media sources are fairly useless is nothing new and not specific to gaming.

Bad as they may all be, berating your readers on a regular basis seems to be the unique domain of games media.
Even the ones that don't do it should feel some embarrassment that their other colleagues are so arrogant and dismissive of their audience.
It's pretty obvious many don't write for us. At best they write at us.

Journalists are to be held to the utmost standard and are to be questioned and held to the fire and substantiate their writings even when they're right.
Again, the majority of these folks are hacks who claim to be "media" when it's convenient but then say "chill broh, I'm just a person who loves games" when it comes time to answer questions.
How the f#$% does every gamer see clear as day what Blizzard did as a big mistake and foul to their cult following and then magically a gang of hacks start railing against the player base for seeing the obvious?
Want to know how?
Or maybe the people who are out of touch are these groupies who just want to be "around" and don't want to risk losing their passes and invites to demo games.
P.S. Will Powers is a f#$%ing moron with that whole mobile/female fake SJW play too. That's the type of idiocy that fires up the other side of stupider side of stupids.
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
He's not a game journalist, he's a f#$%ing idiot who has a youtube account, a capture card, a mic, and a base of other f#$%ing idiots who hear his cliche words and cheer them.

I was not refering to him, I was refering to who he was refering to, and I felt his points about what she said in reference to 3 words in a 30 minute gaming demo that triggered her where spot on.
You do have to admit that journalists need to walk an extremely fine line since some of these companies are so easy to black list. Even though I dont like seeing so many media outlets and individual content creators latching onto anything that is a hot topic just to try and make some of that easy clickbait money, it doesn't negate things being true about the topic.
Most Gaming "Journalists" are as much a journalist as Sean Hannity. When you continually defend, apologize for, or blindly support the organization you're reporting on, that's not journalism. They're commentators.
Biased commentators that understand their role and the business that is paying them and how they get paid.
I also don' want to read anything that sounds like someone is trying to write an interesting novel,i pretty much want to hear the straight forward. Most of all i want to hear these guys talk like a real person,if the game is crap,SAY SO,quit sayin it like you are AFRAID to say it.
Oh well you know it is not quite there yet,BUT !!! it is only Alpha so the game will improve a lot,you know the typical bull we read a LOT.
What is the other thing i see a LOT ??Often the titles and opening lines are ones of complete bias, amazing how this site just happens to find a 100% pro supporter of EVERY game..lol. BTW most often these writers are ASKED it is NOT of their own free will to write articles, there is an AGENDA behind everything.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
The vocal minority of players often overreacts. But it's still the market telling you something that as a developer, you should listen to. Studios understand this for the most part.
In my experience as a developer, the game media is absolutely horrible. They love drama, most have personal axes to grind, and they almost never present a balanced picture.
Take for example all the coverage about layoffs. Almost nowhere did you see the media explaining why this is kind of normal in games, or that at the same time this has been one of the best recent years for studios getting funding. Instead what you saw was the media using it as an excuse to push other more political agenda's.
The game industry could live without most of the game media and be just fine IMO.
While I enjoy this site and have many a time seen professional behavior when it comes to not insulting your readers and just being civil human beings. You still look like desperate hacks every time you call something a MMO when it clearly isn't. I wish I could put that in a nicer way but oh well.

Customers keep you honest, no matter your profession. Piss them off and they go elsewhere. The fact that mmorpg.com has stuck around for as long as it has is because of the people coming to the site, not in spite of. Those people "castigating" you are keeping your lights on, remember. You all make your living off of writing things on the internet, it would probably be a good idea to obtain some thick, maybe even metallic skin.
The problem sites like to mix their game reviews with social commentary about the people who will be playing or not playing said games. It's nice when a news site can keep things objective and keep their toes out of the very bloody water.

- Stop calling hacks who didn't go to school for journalism journalists
- Stop calling hacks who need brown envelopes to keep the lights on in their hovels journalists
- Stop calling hacks who just really want a plane ticket, free swag, early access, and to hang out with the people they're "covering" journalists
