Lol as others pointed out - setting up shop in Cali - meantime - every game dev is moving their shop out of Cali...

In the past - it was "set up shop in a market where there's a lot of developer talent" - makes it easy to hire people. But a ton of talent has left Cali - so not even this holds true anymore.

I'd suggest Austin, TX - tons of game companies have moved there or have offices there and the game dev market is strong.

Also a fraction of the cost of Cali - I know devs that moved from Cali to Texas - took paycuts and still had way more take-home pay and better quality life due to much lower cost of living.

Well, better than setting up shop in Restin, VA.

    ;)

Friendliest country for surveillance capitalism and one of the friendliest for loot boxes.   So makes sense.

Would have meant more, to me, if this was a step taken before the Western release. At this point I'd enjoy the launch version 100x more than where BDO is currently.

BDO is their own in-house game, but the company also owns EVE Online / CCP so there's that too.

Pearl Abyss continues to grow and expand because of 1 IP Black Desert which was the their first. Its simply amazing watching this happen from day 1.

God Of War is a true masterpiece and the undisputed GOTY made by a Sony gaming studio in California. Microsoft just opened up a new AAA gaming studio "The Initiative" headed by Darl Gallagher in California.

Too bad they had to set up in a shit hole state.  Shoulda come to Austin where everything's still relatively cheap.  Just slightly north of Austin, say in Round Rock, you could buy a goddamn mansion for what you'd pay for a studio apartment Commiefornia.

I live in california, if it wasnt for the weather, this state would have no redeeming qualities.

But please, dont call it commiefornia, it just shows ignorance

San Diego is hamstringed by LA and SF. Although you wouldn't know it, there are about 10 million people in CA who disagree with CA politics. It's just that the state is so big they don't get a voice.
For instance our desalinization plant was delayed over a decade to get through all the lawsuits. The state still owes San Diego 10s of millions in transportation funding that has been withheld.

Haha even people question where companies stage their regional office. Maybe a korean company would like to hire from bigger NA Koreans in La? Or maybe having an office in LA allows for easier flights between South Korea?

In short who cares where they stage their office is...

Yeah California is the worst, it's unfriendly to business yet it's the fifth largest economy in the world. The largest economy in United States, why would you want to set up shop there. Unfriendly to business, amazing economy, what is not computing here...

Most equate big cities with the state itself.  When it comes to those locations, it's a fantastic place to live if you're well off.  Though looking more into it, the vast majority of the state has very affordable housing and cost of living, as well as a soon-to-be 15/hr minimum wage and a 100% free health care system if you make something like below 15-20k individually.  The benefits you get from medical are pretty insane; even Amazon gives you 50% off prime if you have it.

What is something that is questionable from an isolationist or "our nation first" stance is them passing a regulation that allows non-citizens to partake in the free health care system.  It may be the fifth largest economy in the world (larger than most countries just by itself) and support most other states with its income, but that does not quite mean it should just throw money everywhere to fix problems.  Or even enable said problems to begin with.  But that is in conflict with a humanitarian view point and, honestly, I won't say having thoughts regarding either is wrong.

Honestly, the best places to live in California are republican districts: Super cheap while also having the benefits of a blue state.  The high minimum wage, low cost products and services, free health care and so on.  Kind of the best of both worlds as it also has less of the "Progressive hipster" culture that seems to drive prices up.

Though that's not me preferring one political stance over the other.  In fact, I don't like the way either party handles itself.  No matter who won the last election, I figured they would be impeached before their term(s) were up.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

A thread full of people wondering why a Korean company would set up a US shop on the West Coast instead of in Texas.

Here's hoping Pearl Abyss turns it into a success. A company that makes good games is not a bad thing to have around.
