    I hate tedious micromanagement in games and it just boggles my mind that a whole genre was created that features the eat/drink micromanagement as a core feature.

    I don't touch survival games... period.

    I have avoided them for exactly this reason ever since playing Xyson so many years ago.

    I only tried FO 76 based on my fondness for the IP and some folks calling it "survival lite."

    Still not light enough in my book (No Mans Sky is about as much tedium, err.. survival I can enjoy) but the only thing keeping me going is I know I can take Perks to eventually neutralize most of the hatefulness.

    Ultimately though, it's the stash cap right now which is killing my desire more than anything,  I'd be so much happier if they'd just let me buy as much as I want.

    I know, I suck for saying that, but I really am a horder and it kills me to toss away or salvage gear I'd like to keep (like this swell level 45 Wardrum) which I salvaged because I could not keep 20 pounds of useless dead weight in my stash.

    Forget about keeping any sort of firearm, actually glad to be melee, really not a lot of choices or variants in that line.

    Survival games exploded because:

    1. If one game becomes popular, expect copycat bandwagoning.
    2. They are basically games built with minimum content and therefore cheaper to make.

    If you let them know you will eat shit, they will feed you shit.

    I like eating and drinking for buffs and poisons. I don't like tedium. Imho Conan Exiles is an awesome game to evolve from, there is a lot to like about it.

    Wish I could get into Conan, but the amount of grass fibers, stones, and such I needed to harvest to move along was too much for me.

    I should probably not be watching Atlas because of it, but I could endure the grind if I weren't grinding by myself, and I really enjoy pirates and the idea of the of sail sea exploration.

    I cant remember the name of the game but there was one in EA where by you gathered all teh ingredients, cooked, then ate it took about 2 hours.....then what you ate only lasted a few minutes and you had to do it all over again......The game never made it past alpha and all the testers were trying to tell them why but they wouldnt listen......Eating/drinking as a feature is not fun.

    I've have mostly eliminated eating issues in FO76 but drinking is still vexing so I'm going to have to spend a few Perk points to alleviate.

    In last nights play session I had to make two batches of 25 boiled water, one at start, another a few hours in, and by time I logged I've got 10 left. 

    At least three times I got the "thirsty" warning, once right in middle of a massive fight, which distracted me greatly.

    I guess this is intentional,  they want me to extend my playing time by forcing me to take these biology QOL Perks early and deferring combat and crafting ones until higher levels.

    I'm not a fan of this approach as it delays me from building the character I want, when I want. (Along with the disagreeable RNG determined perk acquisition process.)

    I'm not the biggest fan of Survival games. I get bored because most of them, if not all, devolve into a grind for food/water/medicine with no other content. If you want to do something, the world is empty so build it yourself. That's not a game. Let me survive in a fully fledged game, not an empty lot.

    So far the survival game where i've actually had fun is Conan Exiles, and the first thing i do is either disable hunger/thirst or tune it down to the minimum. If FO76 lets me do that then i might consider it in a year when it's all fixed and discounted.

    I hate the survival genre.. mainly because it's all the same. You start, hardly any story, gather some stuff, animations and graphics are dogshit, craft tools, gather more, craft weapons, gather more, build something, gather more, craft armor, gather more... no point, no purpose and most of all... no skill, just time investment. More like time wasted because nothing about that process is especially fun. 

    The appeal is completely lost on me. It is exactly the same in every single one of them. Playing these games is very close to the definition of insanity.

    At least all these battle royale games are trying to put their own spin on it with different progression or systems. Survival is just literally the same thing in every game.

    I got Ark back when it landed on Steam. On paper those survival games sound like they are challenging with progression and feeling of accomplishment, but I just get bored so fast with the tediousness of the "realism"..atleast for Ark as I haven't really had the urge to try another one after that.

    Maybe it is just not my genre, but I think if those games should interest me more they need to improve on the tediousness of very basic stuff. Like don't make me spend half an hour to restock basic food and weapons just to go explore a bit..I need some mechanics to automize that after I did the progression once or a few times.

    Does that mess with the basics of survival games for those who actually enjoy them? If there is one thing I don't want is to be like all those who messed up my mmorps because THEY didn't like the basics of mmorpgs.

    So you dont find any fun in punching trees and running around and spamming E to collect berries?

    Not repeatedly. But my point was also that some stuff in mmos that feel extremely tedious to others, I may be totally fine with, so it is hard to point at tediousness as the only problem. Maybe I just don't buy in to the survival setting in current survival games ? Shrug,

    I want to like survival games but they tend to take things a bit too far.  I purchased The Long Dark on the holiday Steam sale and on my first night I had to kill, cook and consume 8 rabbits (which was something like 16-18 pounds of meat) in order to get full, then when I slept for enough hours to get me into daylight I needed to eat again.  I mean come on, everyone knows you can live for 3-4 weeks with no calorie intake at all, how am I dying after an hour?  It just feels like they try to hide the lack of any other actual content behind these excessive survival requirements.

    These games have no content so they try to keep you occupied via grinding and foraging.Then again MOST games are half  assed,VERY little content if any as many games are just a map and pvp and maybe some cheap ass fodder.

    Ark was a joke when it released and this is in reality ARK rebooted.Sometimes you'll stab a fish and it doesn't even respond,so ZERO AI.Same goes for some animals,they SHOULD be reacting to the first hit and BEFORE that time.
    Watched a chick carry a pet Hen/duck/rooster whatever it was and it didn't even move,it looked like a decoy.She finally got it into the boat and threw up against the Bow and it didn't even look real,it looked like a 2d cut out.
    The ONLY thing that looks realistic is the water.I am pretty sure there is only a few boat models and not many animals either.

    So seeing how this is just ARK and it's same systems,they did NOT put much work into the assets,less than a year.So even as a DLC for ARK,this is a cheap effort.

    Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

    I've touched on this topic before, but one thing that bothers me greatly about the mmorpg genre is that the early games felt like survival games ... yet still had the complexity of an mmorpg.

    My 1st mmorpg was Asheron's Call. A friend and I bought it, with all the excitement of my younger self, loaded it up and quickly proceeded to get dirt napped by every low level mob in the noob areas. IT WAS BRUTAL!

    WTF happened? Every single player back then expected their game to be brutal, but also continue to expand and become more complex as the fantasy world developed around you. 

    Today's market is like trying to ask for a variety juice pack with more than 2 choices in it yet the distributor keeps putting 2 different choices together and asking if that's what you want, ad nauseam. Survival games are even worse. Those are like Lucky Charms now advertising "And now with only one type of marshmallow!".

    This is the kind of question my parents would ask me when I first introduced them to computer games.  They don't understand anything that doesn't have a win condition granted in 30 minutes or less.  The idea that a game lasts up until you don't want to play anymore is foreign to them.

    You see that’s why I like survival mechanics. I like being in the middle of a fight and suddenly exhaustion or hunger and having to fight for my life or try to run. It adds another axis to the encounter. Happened to me while playing through someone’s Skyrim mod where I was fighting several draugr and the exhaustion/hunger (whatever it was) kicked in. I was using the survival dlc from Bethesda. 

    I ended up winning by the skin of my teeth and still remember the encounter fondly.

    for me survival mechanics are greater than punching bushes or collecting rocks. They are another way one must maintain a character.

    Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    I wouldn't mind playing them a few hours here a few hours there if they were better optimized.  That's a deal breaker for me.

    Thats true, getting hungry should be like real life, if you can game for 4 hours without food, your character doesnt need food either, infact why not make a survival game like that, where you dont have to eat because you eating in real life and takinga  break from the game would take care of that, and sleeping too!   You cant log out, so when you sleep you gotta find a safe spot, or dont sleep at all!  That would be crazy, probably would become illegal because people would push it to the limits trying to stay up as long as possible to avoid sleep, or say the game forced you to sleep every day at leaste 5-6 hours, nah that really wouldnt work either, people who can stay up longer should be able to player longer, maybe making a survival game realistic is not a good thing which can spill over to real life, then you got people on the brink of survival just to play the game haha
