Honestly the game might as well already be dead from my perspective. (And steam charts zing!)
I'll never have any interest in anything Garriott puts his name on ever again either.
The cringe surrounding this game and the pathetic blatant Pay2win make me recoil is disgust while deep inside regretting ever having confidence in the pedigree involved with this abomination. It's just sad to think that this is what happened to Lord British. I even question how much he was actually involved in Ultima Online after seeing Shroud of the Avatar.
The entire thing is just depressing.

While we may like to take the micky, I have myself, I do wonder if posters understand that anything which is not a mainstream MMO will not attract huge numbers and if we want something different we have to accept that.

SotA isn't something different, it's something shittastic.

Yup its bad.
I was a huge ulitma fanboy- Both the single player games and UO and for the life of me I cannot even believe this was developed by Lord Brittish- In fact, this game would still be shit if it was done by a first time indie company and wasnt p2w.
Man, am I glad I sold all of my properties long ago, when I saw the first red flags and started getting yelled at on the forums for my critiques. Fortunately, there was an active market for property at that time so I actually got 100% of my money back, and never expected that in a million years.
Anyway, to the person who said that Steam numbers don't properly represent actual player numbers, OF COURSE THEY DON'T, that's not why you read them. Steam numbers reveal trends. The Steam audience may just be a fraction of the total player base, but when the Steam numbers start to go down, that's reliable evidence that the overall numbers are probably going down at a similar rate. It's not a 100% fit, but it's close enough to give you a reliable sense of the actual trends.
SotA is one of the worst episodes in PC gaming history. And it was so predictable once we got a look at the combat "system" and then watched as Portalarium went into complete denial and defensiveness in reaction to criticism. Then, when the fanbois and whales started to gang up on anyone who offered criticism on the forums (yes, I'm looking at YOU, and you know who you are, I had the same name there), it became obvious that everything was going south. And boy did it. What a fiasco. To be honest, it couldn't have happened to a more deserving group of "developers" and "players".

This game was dead 2 years ago when the developers and P2W crowd started bullying people who were making constructive criticism of the game. The other players left the game and only a few people who spend large amounts of money are left. Now they are crying they have no long to play with. Instead of listening to people who deeply disagreed with the combat system and the cash shop they are sleeping in their shitty bed they made. It will not be too much longer for this game that is for sure.
You can get the Christmas Decorations pack for $179.00 and you're still complaining? This makes me think nothing will make you happy.

My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
Looking at some numbers from last two twitch steams there is just over $16k every start which is subscriptions. each sub is $9 so that is 1777 subscribed accounts. the rest of each telethon is straight out store purchases every Friday. The last two have been making a lot. hitting between 60-80k. I know some has more then one account but this just shows there are at least 1777 accounts that are active vs the steam charts

Wasn't there a quote from one of the top developers (Starr Long?) that they need 50K active accounts monthly to be profitable and stay afloat? You think the game is anywhere near that? Come on. It's surviving by begging. How long is that viable?

Yeah that was quoted in early development over a year ago, they also had an updated comment made by Chris / Starr in a twitch after layoffs stating that things are good, infact they are about to do more hires again in ramp up to Ep2. There is a major change coming R63 which they are keeping under wraps which addresses one of the biggest issues that people complained. what it is we are not sure yet...

What about the fact that they are begging to keep the lights on? They are BEGGING every month. That raises no alarms? Things are good AFTER layoffs, yet they are somehow going to find the cash somewhere to hire more staff back on? Does any of this make sense to you? And, one patch is going to fix a fundamentally flawed game that the vast majority of former supporters have abandoned? Is this another of those miracle events that is supposed to get tons of new and returning players in the game? It may be a cliche, but you can't polish a turd.

Its a player backed game, where everything is paid for by players lol. Your not obligated to support the game. those that want to do. Myself and others want to see our ideas get into the game and for it to shape into a true successor. Its not begging when people want what they are offering in exchange
They finished EP1 content and core systems were pretty much completed so made sense to let the contractors go as well extra staff that is not needed until they ramp up again. If you have every worked contract as a developer you would know this is how every business from software to construction works. You don't pay to keep contractors around until the next project starts
that right one patch is not going to fix everything. That is why there are massive monthly patches every month. as to majority of the supporters leaving If you are talking about the KS peeps there was a lot of them that thought this was going to be Ultima 10 which it was never to be. then there were others to speculated what they thought the game would be for PVP and it wasn't what they thought. I think when investing in a product one should read more then speculate or one can be disappointed. As to core supporters in game a few left but guess what the monthly twitch has generated on average more money these days then a year ago. That tells me that supporters are increasing.
As to you can't Polish a turd, so not true, look at a lot of games that started off bad that managed to pull out of the mud. the player base as been increasing slowly but steady since they have addressed a bunch of issues as well quality of life improvements for more casual players.
every year and month for the last 3 years people have been saying this is going to die, yet we are still rolling
Twitch this last Friday hit $105,000 still going strong. For a doom and gloom that people here in this mmorpg forums post it sure seems to be bringing in more development donations the last 3 months and it has been increasing. Not to mention the content keeps coming out, and we are getting the things we are asking for in the Q&A. I myself really want to know what this big change in Feb Patch next month will be that they mentioned.

course because ther eis not such thing as people looking to see how it goes, and there is not people who have that morbid curiosity to see the dead, also there is not such thing as twitch bots and fake views. serious if steam numbers don't count twitch number even less.
btw I was thinking this game was still on dev phase, does this mean its already launched? damn

Yeah, it finally had an official launch, a couple of years after going persistent. Unfortunately, the millions of Lord British fans supposedly clamoring for a new Garriot game didn't notice.
Do you honestly think that e-begging is a sustainable business model?
Numbers have not decreased and new players playing all the time.
According to whom? Steam numbers tell another story. Yeah, yeah, people can play through the launcher, but if the numbers are on the up and up, why hasn't Portalarium released them?
there is no evidence of this ship sinking
Here is just some of the evidence that the ship is indeed sinking:
More than twenty-two thousand Kickstarter backers, and now mere hundreds play. The kickstarter page is filled with literally thousands of comments from angry, betrayed backers.
Steam numbers have dwindled and steadily declined. The official "launch" failed to bring in many new players on Steam.
The game went free-to-play a mere seven months after "launch."
Beg-a-thons are bringing in progressively less money.
Players on the SotA forums are extolling the greatness of Legends of Aria and how it accomplishes what SotA failed to accomplish.
The CEO of Portalarium attempted to quietly dump his title, and then when people noticed he pretended it was no big deal.
Travian Games dumped Portalarium after they realized that SotA was a dud. This was only confirmed through a third party, not through Portalarium directly.!
Ok you me on it! downloading now. PS which start pack should I buy?
Getting dumped by Travian .. is that the definition of rock bottom ? Yeah anyways as @Viper482 said, the game is not that bad ... if you compare it to whatever else is out there. If it weren't such a horrible p2w model, it might be worth playing .. I mean it is still kinda shit, just maybe a tiny less shit than all the other shit mmos :P And theoretically it could be worked into a good game still .. very theoretically (not with it's current monetization though).
Make everything free, and earnable in game and this game is paradise.
A subscription is the only fair way but i wouldn't play it even if was sub based,it is imo not good enough. I play my fave mmorpg already with no added costs, private server,so to get me involved for the long term a new mmorpg has to be REALLY good and this is barely average.
What i would like to see is a cross between FFXI/FFXIV with 100% voice overs and even still i would improve most all systems. In other games ,including this one, there is hardly a single system i would adopt to my game, most systems i see i would outright scrap rather than tweak.
The big picture problem with gaming is they usually look like BUDGET games, instead of the passionate game the developer truly would want if could afford to build it.
