Only games that you would recommend playing in their current state count. Games that you used to like before something ruined them don't count, nor do games that you don't think are good now but hope will be good in the future. Beta or early access can count if you think the game is worth playing as it is right now, even if it never does get any better. Games currently inaccessible to the general public do not count. Private servers don't count unless officially sanctioned by the game's developers, but even then, many different private servers for the same game only counts as one game.
Only MMORPGs count, though you can use your own personal definition of what makes a game into an MMORPG or not. A game that clearly fits some other established genre better than it fits as an MMORPG does not count.
For bonus points, list the MMORPGs that you regard as worth playing now.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!
for those who just like farming and pve bosses: WoW.
for those who like fps games and farming: destiny 2.
for those who only love the classics: go for daoc or WAR.
uh and if you are into space sims: eve online ofc

-Witcher 3 (best story in a solo MMO)
-Divinity 2 Original Sin Enhanced Edition (best solo/co-op MMO you'll ever play)
-X series (new one just came out, but I'd wait for patches. Won't get a more indepth MMO for soloing)
-Crusader Kings 2 (my favorite paradox game, best family style MMO)
-Europa Universalis 4 (conquer the world MMO)
-Monster Hunter World (hunt monsters MMO)
-AC Odyssey
-AC Black Flag (which I personally prefer over Odyssey, best pirate MMO you'll ever play for soloing)
-Grimoire (oldschool dungeon crawler solo MMO, won't like it if you require high end graphics and don't like archaic game design.)
-Kenshi (an actually good survival MMO game, but its brutal, like dark souls brutal)
And guys cause you all take things so seriously, I know none of the above are MMOs. But they are far better for soloers/co-opers. So this post is sorta making fun at all the soloers who want to change MMO game design to be 100% solo/co-op :P but at same time recommending good games

meanwhile, I jump back and forth from D3 to POE to Grim Dawn to Titan's Quest, hoping that something good comes along soon
It depends on who you are giving the recommendation to of course. For sci-fi fans I think the only real option is SWTOR now that Wildstar is gone.
I don't consider EVE an MMORPG, I consider it an MMO Space Sim. It's a very different type of game but I'd still suggest they take a look at it.
And no matter how desperate I'll be for a sci-fi MMO that isn't in space...SWTOR will not be on a list of interested MMOs. I'd rather play a singleplayer game...for cheaper and sometimes even free without stupid cash shops.

My choice would be ZERO.
Let's party like it is 1863!
If we are honest with ourselves MMORPGs as a category died a long time ago. Don't blame the gamers, but rather the devs who choose to spend more time making digital Amazon like stores rather than innovative new features. And before you say it's not the devs fault just stop.. it absolutely is the devs fault. It's a ethical question and if they sat down and realized what they were doing they would quit and find something new.
Of course, maybe the good devs already made that decision which would explain why the games have gotten worse in terms of bugs and lack of features.
On my own initiative I would recommend 0 - If emulators can be included then a few.
If asked "I am going to play a mmo, which would you recommend I play", then the person already decided to play one so it becomes a question of which I would mostly recommend. I could probably name a few and only with a lot of reservations "you should know that this game is .....", GW2 a nice little single player game in a shared world, Neverwinter a decent game but the p2w is dominant, WoW but you should really really rather play an emulator at wotlk or before era, eq progression server.
If we reach out further and included non mmos (which is becoming a thing I guess), I could recommend Warframe and Path of Exile.
And finally if I exclude what I would play and say "it is not my kind of game but you might find this and that interesting if you ....." then there is probably a bunch.

SWTOR was always just WOW in space, and one of the last its "clones."

ESO, GW2, EVE, FFIV, and WOW.
Now, for me personally, and for anyone well familiar with what the genre once was, the choice is zero.
Which is why I've been playing single or smaller multiplayer games for quite some time now.

Have not yet though. Maybe there is hope?
Nah there is really none for me or the human race.
ESO
There may well be more, not sure what AoC is like these days (I understand they added a lot of material) or SWtOR (doubt the pvp has changed) and Secret Worlds Legends (doubt the combat has changed). Also FFIX, not played it but hear good things.
