RIP Marvel Heroes... special shout-out for that game as I enjoyed it a lot, even though it died in 2017.
My son, now finally game-age, would LOVE Marvel Heroes. He's 5, so just running around punching guys with Spider-Man, Hulk, etc would have been his everything. Sucks that he cannot. Maybe when Ultimate Alliance 3 comes out.
He won't be able to smoke in an airplane neither. Life just sucks now!

I remember walking by a guys truck in the HS parking lot and he had a hunting rifle mounted on the back window. 20 years ago. I imagine rural schoolls are different though. I go for walks and hear hunter's shots out on the water. It's routine here so nobody worries. But it's creepy when SWAT--in full gear and empty rifles--does school shooter response training in this lonely elementary school. I know that's the new norm, but I don't think news like that will ever sit well on me.
Also "It’s not that Bless is a bad game, so much as it’s just way too late to the party to make the impact it could have several years ago" bothers me. The judge of a game is its audience. Let them decide. And even a small audience isn't the final decision. This shouldn't be a race.

Congratulations to ZOS on another well-deserved award!
Having played both XIV and ESO extensively, I'd say this is easily and thoroughly well-deserved. Back during 2.0 or very early 3.0, it would have been a tougher call for me, probably favoring XIV. Now though? It's a no-brainer.
SE went strong into 2.0 and even early 3.0. Somewhere along the line, things went off a cliff, and the development became lazier and lazier, with less creativity, and more blatant paint-by-numbers design.
Recently added dungeons in Stormblood use the same "square/circle/octagaon boss platforms connected by pointless loot corridors" approach they started using in 3.0.
You can predict exactly where the boss fights will be in a FFXIV dungeon without stepping foot inside; just look at the map. They're using boss mechanics that have been reused over and over going back to 2.0. Seriously, did anyone else
around since 2.0 get strong "deja-vu", with flashbacks to Garuda / Fenrir / Opinicus when they first saw Hedetet in 'The Burn'? I sure did.
ESO, meanwhile, continues to come up with creative dungeon concepts and layouts, introducing new and interesting, and *challenging*, boss mechanics that are not regurgitated in dungeon after dungeon. Check out "March of Sacrifices" from the recent Wolf Hunter DLC. Check out "Fang Lair" from the Dragon Bones DLC. Check out open world dungeons (yes, ESO has them; contrary to Yoshida's claims otherwise, it *can* be done, by a capable team anyway). Check out Nchuleftength in Vvardenfell for just one such example.
World Design... Well, in FFXIV all I can say is "what world design?". 2.0 XIV's re-built Eorzea was interesting and very well-crafted. It felt closer to a world, to me. Since 3.0, though, it's become a series of pretty dioramas that exist only to contain quest monsters and NPCs. No sense of "place". No sense of being in a living, believable world. Remember when people were concerned that 3.0's areas were so massive, but felt so empty, and Yoshida said they would continue to add more content to those zones over time to fill them out? I do. What happened to that? Nothing, that's what.
In ESO, ZOS has crafted a *world* that feels lived-in. Running around the world, you come across hidden treasure, dungeons, random quests, little "set pieces", small encounters with Daedra, bandits attempting to rob travelers, Mages battling each other, NPCs engaging in day-to-day activities and (voice acted) conversation, and so on. All these things that tell about the world and those who live there. ESO is the first MMO I've played since FFXI where I would say the world "doesn't care" that you exist. It's there, and life goes on with or without you around.
In short: ESO's Tamriel is a World. FFXIV is a pretty set piece for a game.
Remember when Yoshida said Addons would be brought to XIV soon after launch? Remember how that promise gave way to delays and, ultimately, excuses about "why it couldn't be done"? Well, I guess ZOS never got that memo either, as ESO has had a healthy and active Addon community for a long time now.
And on and on.
Point is, ESO is *more* than deserving of this accolade, and demonstrates why in more ways than many may realize (especially those haven't actually played it), or I would dare to try and write about.
Yoshida and his team have continued to take a lazy, uninspired, color-by-numbers approach to XIV's development.
Matt Firor and his team have continued to pour a tangible amount of passion and creativity into ESO, growing and expanding it more and more as they go.
What a utter distasteful list of titles. I guess you could say its a "western" list.
ESO as being the best overall mmorpg? OMG the horror of this currently MMORPG game industry. The game that has one of the worst pathing problems ever to plague a game. Loading screens that are worse than EverQuest ever was. Nerf fucking city. Not a horrible game mind you but far from what I would call "best overall MMORPG". If this is really what is out there, this industry is dead.
I liked ESO a lot, the economy pushed me away. The clunky cutesy guild vendors were annoying. I have a busy life and come and go from MMOs. The requirement to be in a guild to sell meant I had to rejoin a guild every time I started again. That said I was downloading ESO today to start again.
The Division 2 ??? Really ? After the mess of the first version people are still going to fall for the second one ? Seriously, you couldn't pay me to waste my time on Division 2 after the horrendous experience of the first.
And I for one, appreciate the extra effort this year to use much more accurately descriptive categories.

Still time to go back to school and get some quality smoking time.
I think BfA was the bigger disappointment.. and caused more people to be disappointed, myself included. The only good thing about it is Warmode.
BLESS was always going to be mediocre, at best.. and hardly anyone was interested in it anyway.
People blow the little things about BfA WAY out of proportion. There was a good number of players that actually enjoyed it.
It's hard to keep returning players around for long when it's a game as old as WoW. About a month after going back, my old boredom returned and I cancelled my sub again. I did like BfA, but it was just more of the same at the end of the day.
I enjoyed the story and that was about it. Once I completed the story on both alliance and horde sides, I unsubbed. I came back for 8.1 to continue the story, but only on allaince side. I can't be bothered with the Horde. Once I have completed the story for 8.1 I'm done again until 8.2. No other interest in the game at this point.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

That's largely what I did too.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
I woulda gave the best persistent online gsme to Warframe. I was shocked how engrossed i could become in a third person shooter based game which is normally not in my wheelhouse.
POE is still deserving tho.

Currently Playing EVE, ESO
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.
I liked ESO a lot, the economy pushed me away. The clunky cutesy guild vendors were annoying. I have a busy life and come and go from MMOs. The requirement to be in a guild to sell meant I had to rejoin a guild every time I started again. That said I was downloading ESO today to start again.
Trade guilds are one of my "love/hate" aspects of ESO. I like the idea, and I see why they make sense. But it can be a pain in the neck to get to a vendor to buy an item, esp if it's in a location you haven't been to, etc. But, again, it lends to the more "world" and less "game" aspect of ESO that I love.
I have to rejoin one of my trade guilds after I return from breaks as well. It's a minor annoyance, really, IMO. I just contact the leader or officer of the guild, and within the day, they re-invite me. Last time it was literally within 5 minutes of me messaging them.
Others won't kick you as long as you tell them in advance you're taking a break, but will be back.
Others kick members very very very rarely. Another I'm in (I'm in 2 since I'm usually selling a lot of stuff ) never kicked me at all, even during several month breaks.
But I can see how it could be annoying to people, esp. if they're used to more centralized 'auction house' type setups which *are* more convenient for sure. To me, it's an acceptable trade-off.
ESO is a joke. The game is cookie cutter content that a 2 year old can walk thru and get rewards. PvP is a joke, end game is a joke, story is a joke, there is no dumber, water-downed clicking simulator worst than ESO. Every dungeon has the same three things in it and it takes 2mins solo to get them....THATS Game of the YEAR ROFL!!! Bought and paid for.....
