as far as i know people are voting for those games, you go the game page and vote for it, it is not vote from staff of mmorpg.com, this vote come from people who voted for their favorite game on its page.
Wow is really crouded atm. Lots of ppl around me on lvl 110+ content, I even see horde (Silvermoon EU). Instant ques for pve and pvp.
There are no instant queues in WoW... especially not in PvP. It's still very popular but its current state is appalling compared to how it was with Legion.

It was a bit exaggerated but for pvp its max a few minutes. Dungeons almost instant. Must say I always see diff ppl in the bgs.
Same goes for ffxiv dungeons (I only play healer) for pvp I have no clue.
FFXIV and ESO are both *VERY* good MMORPGs. Its not even a case of "tallest midget", these games deserve praise. I haven't played GW2 since HoT and haven't kept up to date on it, but it was an excellent MMORPG as well during HoT.
In terms of quality and quantity of content, FFXIV is the best MMORPG in the last decade. Sure, its not for everyone. Many don't like the combat, world layout, all of that. That's fine. Doesn't mean its not a great game, just not the right game for you.
When there are less than a dozen MMOs that even exist the list is short on which one(s) can be best.
No particular order:
Lotro Rift Swotor FFXIV ESO WoW GW2 WURM (?) BDO Warframe(?) Secret World(?) Eve Life is Feudal (I guess) Archage Aion (bet you all forgot that existed)
All I can think of and i had to really dig deep. Not sure if all of them are still live even. But I guess that list is 15 deep so more than the 12 I thought were still around. But to be fair I suspect half of them dont have the pops to be considered anyway.

Other than the hundred or so listed, there are even some currently running but unmarked like Shores of Hazeron. @rodarin you are off by about an order of magnitude.
Are all of them worth playing? Probably not. But there are far more than 15.

I enjoy ESO, I'm just not into that type of combat and playstyle all the time. WoW I play, but BfA was not a fun expansion at all. FFIV would be great if they didn't put classes through a quest wall.

I prefer GW2 other both of those. I really like the flow of the combat which has great timing. Love the adventuring and the population is very helpful for the most part. ESO is good and would be second for the types of adventuring that's possible. FFX14 was good but I've gotten spoiled by games that have nearly everything voiced.

If the servers are still online but no one is playing then I dont count those. Shores of Hazeron has 5 people online right now. You seriously going to call that an MMO? Maybe by definition but not in reality.
I guess when I was the only guy left logging into Vanguard it was still an MMO by definition. But even with months of advanced warning they were shutting it down no one even came back to fool around for nostalgia purposes.
But sure there are probably close to 100 multi player games out there with less than a dozen peopel on each of them. So if you want to be desperate enough to use them as some sort of example feel free. But if there are that few people playing them then I doubt very highly they would come close to answering this guys concern about why the two he mentioned were considered 'the best'.

I view it in terms of design like; can this game handle a hundred players in the same vicinity without lagging or glitching?
That's a hard question to answer, because not all games have a hundred players in the same area by virtue (or vice) of playerbase. However, after playing enough titles, you sort of get a sixth sense (which can sometimes be upset).
Games with this sort of design are much closer to the definition of MMORPG than games that have much larger playerbases but allow only a few dozen in the same digital area without issue, those without persistent worlds, etc.
The danger in pinning the definition of MMORPG to what is popular is that what is popular changes.
Also... where are you getting that SoH has 5 people online? Just curious. I'm not saying you're wrong, but most MMORPGs don't publish player numbers unless it's something to write home about and even then it should be taken with a grain of salt.
I don't think you can claim that every MMORPG except the 15 you listed have less than a dozen players on each of them; you are grasping at straws to support your former point.

I stopped playing ESO on principle because of lootboxes and aggressive in-game fundraising practices. But, from a technical point of view, it's one of the better MMOs that I've played. I also quite LOTRO for both abusive fund-raising and insultingly easy game play - at the "self esteem trophies for walking across a room" level. WoW I dip into and out of; I simply run out of things that I like to do after a few months. I do appreciate that - if I skip an expansion - I don't have to grind through old stuff to update my character; a little while levelling and I can be back in the current expansion. I also like it because I detest microtransactions in every form - I never buy them - and I won't play a game where they're needed (or one where normal game play is made deliberately insufferable to give you an incentive to skip them.) I'm one of those folks who prefers a subscription game as a result. I never played FF XIV because I don't click in general with Asian MMOs, but voting for it is certainly reasonable. I also dislike MMO PvP - I play boardgames, which are actually fair, for competitive gaming.
Given that, ESO and FF XIV strike me as perfectly reasonable.

Even if you didn't count the 100~ people online mmo's you're still far off. You didn't count some of the most popular mmo's (B&S, MS2 to name a few) or some of the old mmo's people still play in high numbers (MS1, Elsword, Vindictus, Lineage2 and L2OS).
You're so far off with your list, you didn't even list Path of Exile, one of the most popular. It's as mmo as Warframe is.
If you don't play them, doesn't mean they don't exist anymore.
What do all 3 of these mentioned: WoW, ESO, FFXIV, have in common? None of them forces their players into non-consensual PvP. There's a reason they're so successful.
Those other game forced you? lol
Did people with guns show up to your basement and made you buy their game and log in or are you being dramatic?
Their list seems pretty consistent when comparing to sites like reddit. I don't have any problem with the games on the list this year.
Here's something to think about:
What would the list look like if it was an annual ranking of all MMORPGs ever released to date?
How would the industry change or react if, for example, EQ still kept winning every year? Would we still have games like Fortnite being made? Would we have nothing but EQ clones? Something in the middle?

Think you missed the point. MMORPG's based around PvP are not as successful as games that do not focus on PvP.
You are always and SHOULD be using your own criteria and opinions.Seeing any site or someone else's list should be meaningless to YOU and games you want to play.
Not always but sometimes lists are made for monetary reasons.Like i wouldn't trust any numbers from Super Data, they get paid by developers, they are a research/marketing firm. They told devs years ago to get into mobile,a no brainer yes but how is that good for the gamer's,it is NOT it is good only for the business. Numbers can also influence stock and value of a brand and why there are severe laws surrounding misconception.
Personally ,i don't see FFXIV as a bad pick,it covers as much ground as other games and has likely grown bigger faster than many other competitors games,so the effort is there.
I break games down into genres because no one game is just BETTER,it is only better at certain things that some genres don't have.Example is FFXIV better at building,no it is not ,is it better at twitch combat,no it is not,i am sure anyone could make a huge list. To me the best mmorpg is still FFXI,best fps is still UT99,best tcg is still mtg.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Cause an impact !!!..... I picked up on it instantly.
He is saying their is nothing good to play, and by people saying "ESO and FF14 it's like the repetitive thing to say with not real meaning behind it".
Its like giving a standard answer. Many giving this as a suggestion are not even playing themselves.
Being this is is real point.... I agree with him
People feel they should give an answer. I feel if you don't have one don't say anything.
