So I was looking at another thread and people mention how the combat is so easy and such. It got me thinking of what is actually considered hard?
Actually doing it. In a game, nothing is "hard" or "hardcore". It's just clicking buttons.
You've obviously never played fighting games at competitive level where the top players are able to frame count and execute perfectly timed counters and combos.
My vote goes to competitive fighting games
The last competitive online fighting game I played was Dead or Alive 2 on Xbox, and that was a while ago. Can confirm: it was hard, but it was glorious. I was fortunate enough to grow up in the 90's in Japan playing against local kids at a bookstore in front of a stand up cabinet Street Fighter Alpha; that's a real fighting game match to me: shoulder to shoulder with another kid, waiting for him to bust out a supermove at just the right time, knowing what every counter is, subconsciously thinking about how many 100 Yen coins I have left in my pocket.
Virtua Fighter 2 was also an epic experience versus other players in a multistory, mega arcade next to a train station.
I've often said this here, and it's no doubt colored by my own experiences, but 1v1 combat especially goes down like a fighting game in Vendetta Online.
edit: I also played Mortal Kombat 4 at a stand up arcade in the student-run, basement snack shop of my dorm in college "@DMKano " Those long combos were really crazy, but pulling one off felt somewhat like nailing an excellent guitar lick.

In terms of strategy etc i consider Final Fantasy Tactics quite difficult.
And of course many games combine both, see WoW etc.
In general i never consider time investment a component of difficulty.
