I didn't vote because of the new system this year, but I also thought AC Odyssey was the best rpg (which totally surprised me, it was a massive improvement over Origins!) and ESO was best mmo.

I would love to get into ESO, but I can't get over my own hatred for having to swap weapons. Its literally the #1 reason I can't stand ESO or GW2. That little extra micro management drives me nuts.

Between this and their auction house set up are two of the bigger reasons I never went back.

Should have had the category: Biggest fall from grace. You would have had at least two nominees in Bethesda and Blizzard.
Oh, I think you could add Riot, ANET and a few others to the list, 2018 was a great year for gaming related shenanigans.
Anet had a fall from grace in the eyes of the media, if we're talking about the infamous Jessica Price incident, but that same incident was the exact opposite of a fall from grace in the eyes of the audience that actually matters - their players. It was an exceptional display of loyalty to the consumer that should have been universally commended in news stories, not condemned.
Outside of that, there's nothing of note. They gave us a handful of great, free maps and story chapters that ESO would have undoubtedly charged for as part of their constant, tiny expansions.
Biggest disappointment? World of Warcraft. They have managed to kill the most popular game of all time. So many people have left the game now. All in 2018
Time is money, friend.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

I agree, the guild vendors are a huge pita and seeing as trading is one of my favorite things to do in an mmo, I can’t really play the game longer than a week or two before putting it back down. I get why they do it , but at least put some love into the interface and search functions, my God. Unfortunately there probably is no way to update them without breaking the mods players have become accustomed to.

There have been so many disapointments, from BF V to FO76 and BLOPS4 to Sea of Thieves and Atlas, i think WoW probably wins that one due to it being a much bigger game and one that used to be great, rather than an anticipated game that failed to deliver.
Make sure you take it slow and enjoy it's content , especially the story! You will burnout 100% if you are a new player regardless..
The type of player who doesn't burn out on Warframe has got to be a very specific kind of person. I'm certainly not one of those, as I tend to play Warframe in bursts of several weeks/months before shelving it for an extended time and letting the new content pile up.

Hey now, don't be trying to take the only "award' FO76 received away from it now.
Gotta be able to spin this into a positive next year.

The hell?!? Guess the cult of Warframe came out in force again, but how did an almost solely single team instance based game even get allowed in such a category in the first place? What's next, will Skyrim (yes I mean Skyrim, not ESO) win MMO of the year next year?
Would have made much more sense for something like GW2, or Black Desert to win such a category. Would have been nice if GW2 won anything this year.

You have to understand they are painting with a very broad brush when using the term "persistent game."
They are referring to the concept of avatar persistance and growth as in Warframe, vs the more traditional meaning of persistance of the actual game world.itself.

They are painting with no brush at all..
With that logic Online Solitare is now a Persistent game as you can obtain Field and Deck art sets .. for ex ..
Ridiculous shit and maybe the biggest reach ive seen
It literally makes every single online game ever made persistent ..
The watering down , bastardization , homogenizing of gaming continues ..
And considering that they have set a standard with letting older game like ESO win a catergory ( and im not knocking that win) But if you allow older games into these contest ..
How can a game like Eve or UO for ex...not win best persistent online game .. Warframe does not even carry a fraction of online persitency that either of those games carry ..

Does it really matter what a game is called or what category it falls under? Wanting to talk about more than just a handful of the same games every year in a “best of” article isn’t ruining the industry or the website.

Well the choices were:
Warframe
Destiny 2
Path of Exile
Fallout 76
Monster Hunter World
Dauntless
Others:
Desinty 2 sux. Path of Exile, too complicated. Fallout 76, pffft. MHW, great, but not for everyone and not entirely an mmo. Dauntless, never heard. Others: BDO, great grafix, meh gameplay. Rainbow 6, could have been a good contender. Look, anybody could have put any online game on the other's section, but you were already given a choice. Of course, majority would just select a choice, putting your own entry there in the "others" field, like online solitaire is risking a useless vote. Besides, warframe is a great game with great devs. Well deserved win IMO.
