The gear and Javelin abilities are much better in this regard, though we still get a lot of largely identical abilities that merely swap out the type of damage done (fire/shock/physical/etc.).
The random modifiers become more important than the default ability on gear and weapon type when you're at endgame. When you're levelling it's really just use the one with the highest power. That ends when you start doing Grandmaster.. or it should, if you want to live.
That's good to hear. I haven't gotten to 30 yet.
If they focus on getting rid of as much of Tarsis and loading screens as possible, then provide a steady stream of new weapons/inscriptions/Javelins to go with some fresh new content periodically, they'll pull up back into line with games like Destiny and Division, who each went through this same kind of hit and miss at release.
I've hinted at that elsewhere: I'm not sure if it makes this worse or better that it seems to suffer the same pitfalls it's precursor franchises did. On one hand: it's isn't like this is any worse than Destiny or Division when they released, but on the other hand: it's got the same sort of pitfalls Destiny/Division did when they released years ago.
While understandable, I think many of us hoped they could learn from the endeavors of their competition for our sake.
I agree but they have definitely got it set up in a way that makes it very easy to add new content.
I suspect they already have tons of content finished and that's why the roadmap shows content updates every month. They are probably staggering it's release. Good for casual retention, bad for people like me who have stormed through it.. not rushed it.. but put in a ton of hours already.
I kinda hope part of it are more exotic weapon types. Weapons that use ember seals, for example, to create something like the Needler from Halo, or a grenade launcher that launches electricity field grenades (that may already be included at the Legendary level). Those definitely have a lot of room to build on.

My main Masterwork that I use at the moment is a Relentless Light Machine Gun. When you reload it, it sets off a combo explosion.. any time you reload it, not like when the clip is empty or anything like that.
It's a big deal because it means I don't have to have a combo explosion piece of ability gear equipped, if I don't want to, so I can use something else instead. I can set off an explosion any time I want. If I'm in the middle of enemies, teammates just prime them for combos and I just start reloading multiple times and everything dies. It's crazy if you pull it off correctly.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Not many performance issues except a low frame rate for most people. But to be honest here I paid little to no attention to this as it is barely seen (at least by me, I am not FPS sensitive and have a hard time seeing any difference above 45-50fps). Load times between zones and scenes could be improved a bit, but its not like OMFG its ruining my enjoyment in the game. If anything I noticed from running missions is the fact that people need to really slow down. I have ran quite a few and people are missing that chest over there, or crafting mats. Its like everyone is on a race to get to and kill the mobs first.
Glad you are having fun but trying to justify the ridiculous load times and constant pauses to the gameplay as nothing to really worry about it worrying to me. The fact you say you can't tell the difference of higher and lower FPS is worrying to me.
It tells me you can't justify your love for the game vs the actual issues that are present. Haters are haters but far worse is the rose colored glasses fans. You can be a fan and point out the obvious flaws without burying them beneath as if they never or don't happen.
Also stop running that card on 4k, drop down to 1440p and you will have a much better experience, it's not and has never been a 4k card. Amazingly you will get better FPS when you use a card for what it was designed for.

hmmm, not everyone is super sensitive to load times or mega fps.
While I can tell the difference between 50 fps and above 60, I don't really care. Load times? Don't really care unless it's really huge. I just tried 10 seconds on a stop watch several times and it's manageable. There is nothing worrying here.
While you may think it means he can't "justify his love for the game vs the actual issues" it could mean that he just isn't a super sensitive what I would call "non-issues"
If load times are above 10 or so seconds then sure, those can come down.

Matchmaking load screens are generally longer than 10 seconds. But having to endure a load screen to essentially load the Forge UI, and having to go through a load back into the Fort and another load just to get back into your Javelin gets cumbersome. It really diminishes that sense of awesome you feel when you down a boss and you don't have any clue what they dropped until you finish the finish and endure that after-action report screen.
They've tucked away load screen after load screen, even having a load screen to literally load into the one-room "Tombs" you ha e to grind challenges to unlock. You then immediately run back outta the room to load back into Bastion main. That's objectively poor design.

The reason they do it with the tombs, caves and such is because the phases change depending where you are in the story or what the mission is. It's how they are achieving the same effect as phasing anyway.
It doesn't really bother me. There's tons of games where you have to load to go into a small house or small cave or something like that.
It's the length of the main loading screens that bothers me the most, not the fact that exist. Mainly when going to the Fort or heading out on a mission. They are unreasonably long.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
I play arena battle games, so, needing to back to the Hub to change Loadouts, and process gear/rewards and all that, is a common thing to me.
I get that in some MMO's people do loot and gear mid dungeon/instance run, but, that really rolls by the game, if Anthem is set up that you deal with that at the end, than that is how they roll.
I'll be checking this game out sometime in a month to be honest, mid moving, so all my main things are packed up and I am stuck with just a tablet.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
I have to say, regardless of gameplay, regardless of my big beef (lack of rpg elements) and just judging based on story, cinematics and acting - this game is pretty great and hilarious. The acting and facial expressions are so hammy, b-rated, and over the top it makes it extremely entertaining.
I only made it to level 10 and the mission you get in freeplay to find the vault things, but I enjoyed the setting. Its like the director of that Gillette commercial consulted with Captain Kangaroo and decided to make a homoerotic sci-fi setting with the most over-the-top hammy over-acting with the most unrealistic characters some tubby, gender-ambiguous, blue-haired angry freak could imagine. I love it. I love when things are so ridiculous they end up being great.
"Anthem - a world in which the good guys have zero testosterone." My favorite part was that lady forcing that huge smiley, wierdo guy to eat the food. Only a very special type of freak could come up with that scene where every single element requires 100% suspension of belief. This is the stuff that cult classic movies are made from, where it is so cringey and so bad it ends up being the greatest thing you could ever witness.
I love that the Bog Burger/Last Man on Earth lady was a character since she is great, but she kind of ruins the immersion since she is great and funny for normal/regular reasons and not by accident. The story, setting, acting, and cinematics are definitely this games strong point. Almost strong enough to keep me playing despite it not having any rpg elements besides equipment upgrades.
I personally don't know if I would say text chat not being there is a bad thing. Hell it can actually be a good things sometimes because you don't have to deal with other people trying to flame you because you know you wanted to do this or that and they just want to go as fast as possible.
I am going to give this game a chance when it launches normally, not paying for origin access. I plan to play it strictly as solo so this is why I say that the no text is a good thing.
Overall the game didn't really impress me with the demo to be honest, but I will reserve my final judgement on the released product. It really felt like a more modern Warframe but actually slower than Warframe to me which isn't really a bad thing in that respect.

3 factions works fine in Warframe and it's not that bad. However there is a great diversity of missions in Warframe as well (defense, mobile defense, endless excavations, endless survival, hostage saves, stealth cache, etc) - without this variety Anthem doesn't look like it's worth $60 simply because it has like 30-40 hours gameplay total and zero replayability / end-game.
Also it's lacking mini-map, text chat, map markers - as if it was released six months too early. Best buy candidate for August or maybe Halloween sales.

I'm pretty sure all the loading screens and some other problems were due to being rushed to get the game out at a certain time. I'm also pretty sure updates will fix most of the things that need fixing. Some things like loading screens I noticed they talked about improving rather than eliminating.
Other games go with the three faction models but they also have multiple planets, or multiple cities and towns, within each of those factions. I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of such content is being reserved for many expansions and Javelins which will probably need to be bought to compensate for free DLC.

You will want to use their matchmaking system which actually works pretty well. I tried doing everything solo to start with. Its a lot harder and takes way way longer. Stumbled into their mm system by accident and thot: "Hey this isn't so bad", been playing that way ever since. You do not interact with your playing partners you just kill stuff together.
Been playing the crap outa this game since Friday. Enjoying it so far. I still say this is more warframe than destiny but a solid combo of the two at least. To me I feel the floor and ceiling both are higher in anthem than destiny.
However I have a few grips about the game so far and most have been covered the death by now. Load times are one thing, they can be better with an SSD but the biggest issue is the frequency of loading. If you change your loadout at all when first entering the game you will hit about 5 load screens in that time, that's not including if you start behind your group requiring you to load yet another load screen.
How world event rewards are handled.
On a good note Missions, contracts and story has been fine so far, the dreaded tomb quests reddit was flaming about took not long compared to what I was thinking/reading about. Javelins all very unique and play very different from my experience so far, customizing the look is really cool.
Liking what I see so far but there are a few things that need to be fixed because those loafing issues could be deal breakers for a lot of people, ill be curious to see how the day 1 patch works out.
The tombs don't phase, though. They just let you into a small room where you trigger a loot explosion, then leave. Unless they phase after the Heart of Rage mission I'm about to undertake (one that the game appears to imply is the finale one that, coincidentally, has bugged out preventing completion entirely the first two times I attempted it). Those tombs, and the challenges to unlock them, kind of scream "we need moar total playtime, STAT!"
To make the tired comparison: Anthem, like Destiny at release, feels more like the foundation for a great game, than a great game in and of itself (for one, the idea of not showing World Events to all players in Freeplay is silly considering there's only ever 4 players in a single Freeplay max and, currently, the system just means you're likely going to be doing the entire world event alone unless another player happens to be coming through that area anyways while you're doing the event). Currently, it's fun gameplay punctuated, unfortunately, by boring or asinine stretches of walking, talking, and loading. The talking wouldn't be as painful if it didn't force you outta your Javelin to endure. And the walking.. Well, it's walking back and forth through the same small portion of a city. No need to explain how riveting that is compared to, say, launching mortar shells on groups of enemy soldiers.

The Tombs are in freeplay and not everyone in your instance will have opened them or be opening them at the same time as you. If it was open world, and not instanced, other players would see an open sarcophagus.. and the door would be open. It wouldn't work. There is no other way to do it... aside from putting in proper open world phasing but that would be a lot of work for such a little thing.
Proper phasing would be good though, Destiny 2 has it when you go into lost sectors and stuff..
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
so the good is not the gameplay but the bad is part of gameplay? looks to me they still didn't learn anything from they mistakes, they still do the same thing over and over
that for me is a insta skip on this game, if I was hoping bioware could deliver that is
Umm he did say they nailed the combat. Isnt combat in these games a big part of the gameplay?
Gameplay is great. Day 1 patch is incoming this week to fix most of whats been pointed out in this thread. They need a ingame chat system as voice ain't cutting it for comms with squad members.
Biggest problem IMO is they launched not realizing people are going to max level within 2 or 3 days with big marathon sessions. They're going to need a DLC to push out within a month or two.
I cant see it having any longevity, the beautiful world is pointless, you may as well be on rails with the "go here" and "go there" markers, if you look around your squad will go ahead and either force a load on you or get mad as they wait at a door and if you play single player you really get to see how abysmal the AI is. If you want to try it, get the $15 origin access for a month, saved me buying the full game.
I'm really enjoying my time in Anthem, it's plain fun.
Drop gorgeus and the combat is fluid and rewarding.
I agree so much with this review...feel the same about the cons… hope they can fix somehow that disconnection between gameplays, even though i enjoy all of its parts...they trully feel so disconnected from each other.
In everything else i'm loving the game world and gameplay.
Fun game, I agree with the Destiny-Warframe hybrid comparisons..I would add to that Mass Effect Andromeda.
I noted a few weeks back that I heard the same jet pack and Gun sounds from Andromeda which isn't a deal breaker just something I noticed in this but I also see now that a lot of the animations are the same.
Makes me wonder how much of the assets are from Andromeda. Saw some weird facial things again too not as bad as ME:A but still weird. Bioware just cant seem to make Frostbite work for them.. which again, is CRAZY considering Evil Actually's other games use it.
Anyway though overall I think its going to have a rocky launch but they have something cool with the game play itself. It feels damn good to kill stuff and flying around in your own version of War-Machine is a plus.
I think if they can listen to fan feedback and be pro-active about fixing things, Anthem has potential to be something great later this year.. lot's of potential.
There are a myriad of things to fix day one, but for me the biggest and most annoying thing is the forced load screens when in a group. I'm a explorer so when I play these types of games, I want to see how much detail is in the world, I want to see all the fauna, secret locations etc but when I'm just trying to smell the roses, BOOM! I'm yanked into a dungeon which results in a load screen and I lose track of the cool place I just found. I hope they give us the option to explore as much as we want even in a group don't force us to engage if we aren't ready.
We have seen too many rocky ships get settled as far as games, so I wouldn't count them out just yet, the waters will settle and they will figure it out. This is going to be a live service game so it's in their favor to improve and do it in a timely fashion.

They've tucked away load screen after load screen, even having a load screen to literally load into the one-room "Tombs" you ha e to grind challenges to unlock. You then immediately run back outta the room to load back into Bastion main. That's objectively poor design.

Another Warframe Fanboy !
Other games go with the three faction models but they also have multiple planets, or multiple cities and towns, within each of those factions. I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of such content is being reserved for many expansions and Javelins which will probably need to be bought to compensate for free DLC.
