Even after we're all long gone, DDO will still be getting new expansions.

My D&D 5e group plays in Eberron. Had a few adventures base in Sharn. Nice to see it finally created in a game ... but playing Eberron in the system it was meant for, is all I need.

I play MMORPGs because I'm an RPG player. Playing a real RPG is always superior to a MMORPG, but you only play during your game sessions so I love a good MMORPG too. 5e is pretty damn decent and has brought life back into D&D. Now we just need life brought back to MMORPGs.

When a company advertises the new content in their cash shop as part of the expansion ... it's not the game I'll play.

Meh. All the good races/classes are locked behind the cash shop, Tieflings probably will be too.

Sounds interesting Never got into this game, but is it a good time to?

I don't mind actually paying to play a game. I think sometimes we think that we should just be able to get it for free. That mentality is really hurting MMOs and the US.

Probably a rant, and yes I'm sitting on my front porch telling people to get off my lawn, but if a game is F2P they should have some type of way to get monetary support. For games that are B2P or have a subscription I would prefer no cash shop, but if there is one I am fine with cosmetic stuff, especially if there is a way to get it in game.

The deal with DDO is that the game itself is sold in what they call "Modules" or adventure packs, this was a take on the old DnD  campaign modules, that players would buy and run, often called DLC now. So the best content is in thew cash shop, which means indirectly the best gear and loot is in the cash shop, but you can't just buy it, you still need to play the game and earn the gear, after you bought the content. Just the way it is.

There is some serious power-ups they sell in the store, but I am not going to call it P2W as it is a purely PvE game, so there is no winning, in fact getting into a group with someone that bought power just makes the dungeon go faster, as you get the same rewards if you got carried or led the charge, so, there is no winning and losing in that regard.

This game is raid heavy, and requires team work, and there is no a lot of hand holding here, couple that with the fact this game has a very complex and dynamic character creation process, by far one of the most complex I have seen in any game, so there are tons of choices and due to this, it's very easy to make bad choices and gimp yourself.

The graphics are dated, this game was made in 2005, and it really shows it's age in the graphics department. Like you can see the polygon lines and painted on eyes and such, kind of dated,

Honestly, if you are an old school DnD Fan, this game might really be a gem to check out, but, keep in mind, it's old, it's been under several managers and directors, it was sold off by Turbine to Standing Stone, and the game really shows that it had a lot of chefs in the pot, sort to speak.

Would like to put a note that Standing Stone Games is a studio comprised of the staff from Turbine that were working on both DDO and LOTRO, which they specifically moved the games to the new studio as Turbine was bought and absorbed into WB Games.

Turbine is now WB Games Boston and works on a few mobile games.

They have fallen a bit to the dark side, but DDO was still the first MMO to have a truely fair freemium model. I have never paid for VIP. What I ahve done is more or less buy every bit of actual game content they have sold: Adventure Packs, Classes and Races. I prefer that model over monthly sub in this game. I live a farily unpredictable life, so often a monthly sub can easily end up being a waste. When I buy content on the other hand, I can enjoy that content whenever I please.

Minor Note, WB had bought Turbine in like 2009, it was not until 2016 that they chose to close down all their MMO's which included DDO and LotRO due to poor sales. The Developers, that had worked on their MMO's which included, DDO, LotRO, Ashrons Call and Ashrons Call 2, now facing being laid off, formed Standing Stone, and were given the chance to buy the rights to the games, of which they only bought DDO and LOtRO.

That little bit of history aside, I stand by everything I have said about the game

Just wanted to note it since Standing Stone was not an act of being "sold off", but of the developers maintaining ownership.

That's a nice way to look at it.. not exactly true.. but a nice way to look at it.

    Sort of.

It's the same devs moved to a new studio, with the same game(s). Those were the ones interested in continuing work on those titles. There is some changes related to the change in publisher too though.
