Whelp, it could have been worse, better Funcom rather than Ten Cent, Ncsoft or Snail Games right?
Kyl, that was surprising, where's CCP from that list? Navigators are practically capsuleers, and there's space travel everywhere, politics, backstabbing... would be in their comfort zone.
Hopefully "set in the Dune universe" doesn't end up meaning "set entirely on Arrakis." That would be taking 'open world sandbox' a bit too literally. Also, day one everyone will be autorunning across the dunes just to call a sandworm.
Played TSW and AoC from Funcom and had a lot of fun with those titles.
So, unless they make it a survival or battle royale, I will be queuing up for my game copy when they release it.
Still have fond memories of playing Dune & Dune II on the Amiga so hopefully Funcom can add to those. They usually have some good idea's and intentions but the implementation isn't always there so will have to wait and see!
Selling the same game 3x ,this is the new trend in gaming.MMO is nothing more than creating a login screen. What will eb the rest,a survival game?A BR game? IDK but seeing the IP used,i expect LOTS ,i mean TONS of empty space,no living world, more like playing Darkfall in the desert.
IDK where or when this started but i have noticed what seems every developer is creating shallow fill ins to generate cash flow.it really appears the entire industry is hurting so they need these little ideas to keep paying the bills, meaning nobody or no game is doing very well after the first week/initial sales.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
It seems to me if you're a fan of source material, Funcom is a best case scenario. One of the few companies who atleast attempt to match the tone of a setting and keep things semi-canon.
To all the people commenting negatively against Funcom, who would be your better choice?
CD PROJEKT RED . They have a pretty good resume.
Not really Red dead is a failure right now as a multiplayer because its console only, and if it werent for private and modded and coded servers GTA V would also be a failure.
There isnt a company out there that people are in love with or have some cult following that has OFFICIAL servers that are any good.
Thats why there are only a handful of MMOs left and theyre all ancient or getting very old. BDO and ESO are the newest and theyre 5 years old now.
While we have started to get inundated with all these 'multiplayer' game announcements the past couple months they all still have the stink of failure on them. And while some people may be excited about "Dune'' i.p. its not all that what can they really do with it? The Stargate I.P which failed probably close to 5 years ago now has way more potential but no one has picked that up and tried to run with it. Maybe the holders want too much or MMOs just arent worth it.
The wording of all this is also very obvious. At best its another small map snoozefest that some people will be able to run privately with and give the RPers who eyes bleed from doing GTA V or ARK something else to do. Similar to Atlas. But Conan which I didnt think was a bad game was not well received at all and its shelf life was ridiculously short. Mostly because regardless of what people want to claim 'survival' games even with a story or some achievements arent something you can expect a long running love affair with. Even trying to create 'seasons' where stuff wipes and a whole new world magically opens up gets boring fast even if you have a close knit group or people to play with. Streamers did everything they could with ARK and they had a decent run but they still only milked 8 or 9 months out of that game at its height (before it was released) and it took a couple of expansions and monthly 'content' additions during early access to give them that mush,

What does that have to do with CDPR?

youre right I misread it I saw 'Rockstar' for some reason.
But CD Project Red is an even worse example since they dont make online multiplayer games at all. Unless you want to count Gwent....
Dune is a big IP and every IP must be mined for gaming. Funcom for me have a good track record but that counts for nothing, each game stands on its own merits.
We must wait to see if any of these games are a grain of sand that can be called a world.

I could care less about a multiplayer Dune unless it's a full MMO and I highly doubt that's what they have in mind. The MP games getting pumped out these days are either PvP BR, survival or looter shooters.
I think what he an others in this thread are getting at is that Dune is a great story IP with depth and it deserves to be treated right. A story RPG like CDPR still makes or like Bioware used to make would suit Dune better than any of the current trendy and shallow MP genres.

It takes a lot these days to get me excited, but this news sure has. Funcon nails the in-game atmosphere better than most in the industry. Looking forward to hearing more and finding out what actual games come from this.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
