In this day and age, why do you guys play games right when they are released?

CryomatrixCryomatrix Member EpicPosts: 3,223
I've done this before.

- I bought Path of Exile expansion for $40 when I could have just waited and gotten the rest of it for free. But I needed a game to play and y'all know I love me some Path of Exile.

- I also bought subnautica: Below zero when it was clearly not finished but that was because I had just finished the first game and I needed to hit the $30 mark on steam to get $5 off . . . (yes, I'm a marketing tool). [I also bought Ark at $20]

- I did jump into Conan exiles but that was like 7-8 months after release and I was in a intra-PoE phase.

But I am looking at the Anthem thread and it's like, you know the game is going to be a shit show at release, so why jump in. These days, they get a game to like minimum playing level and then release and fix it later. I guess it is a nice way to get someone to pay you for beta testing their game lol.

Any way, what are your reasons for jumping into new games as they release. I understand it, if it was like 10 years prior, but today  . . . not so sure.

They almost always go on sale promotionally shortly after release; after a patch or two to tidy things up. Save money and get a better game. One reason I would play a game before sale is gift, obviously, but also if I had beta tested it or backed it. Age of Wonders new game comes out in August and I have been anticipating it, but not following very closely. If reviews are good I may consider paying full price because I am impatient and want to support the company and future content.

Why shouldn't I? Money, especially for a video game that will give hours of entertainment, is not an object. It's cheap as compared to other types of entertainment.

I spent $242 on Ballet tickets, $186 on Boston Pops tickets to see Star Wars with a live Orchestra, and took friends out last night for dinner for $200.

If I want to play the game I'll play it. I see no reason to wait. I don't fret about bugs and the like and have enough patience to wait for an update if needed.

The money for a video game is nothing when compared to other things. I "could" wait but for what? To save a few dollars?

Now, I won't just buy a game for shits and giggles if it is a full price $60 game but I will buy a game that I've been looking forward to for that amount of money. In other words, games I plan to buy are an instant buy. If I just hear about a game but I'm on the fence I'd rather spend that money on other things. Being committed to buying a game is the driving factor.

Really depends on the game.  Like Arterius said, Cyberpunk 2077 will be a day 1 purchase for me.  And Assassin's Creed was also a day 1 purchase.

Now Anthem, and really any game that heavily depends on an multiplayer aspects. I fully expect there to be bugs and balance issues. Monster Hunter i didn't pick up until it was 50% off.  But I don't know why people are surprised online games have issues out the door, this isn't a new thing. I buy it, expecting those issues. But I also expect those issues to be resolved.

    Two reasons:

    1. Boredom
    2. I play with a group of friends.  It's easier to get everyone involved when a game is releasing than it is 6 months later when the hoopla has died down.

May not make sense, but those are my reasons.

My point was more about the quality (efficiency and bugs) of the game than the price, but since bugs don't seem to bother you, then you wouldn't have an issue with it.

In reference to money on games:
Well, I see your point about money. In reality, money isn't really an issue when it comes to entertainment. Regardless of whatever I spend on video games or try to save, my wife's spending blows it all out of the water. I also spent $400 bucks on Andrea Bocelli tickets, bought 2 for my bro-in-law and his significant other. So I agree with you there.

People and how they spend money basically comes down to what people value vs what other people value. For example, I eat to survive, I don't survive to eat. So I hate eating out, paying for food at an outside restaurant always bothers me. It's such a shitty expenditure, but each to their own. Then again, you may not spend much on a car (not that you need one in Boston) but then again i bought an 80K Tesla 2.5 years ago. (I got rid of it cuz i was sick of paying for it).

I always try to buy all games on sale, not that it matters much as i spend $50/month on Red Bull, my wife will still spend an extra $500/month on bullshit and when i get back into Entropia, i start putting money into that game (deposited a total of $250).

But the way I look at it, saving a few bucks here or there is still better than not saving a few bucks here or there. Man, if I wasn't married, i'd be so rich now (money) but my soul would be poor (love my kid to death)

Because I want to play the game and learn the hard way that it sucks, before anyone gets the chance to give me a warning that the game sucks.

Nahh.. really I seldom buy a game first day. I will wait a few months before I buy a game, and read reviews, unless someone in my static plays it, then I will just buy it and play it with them.. for as long as I can.. depending on how much it sucks.

I always wait...Its nice to get more reviews and info and the price ALWAYS goes down. I have several games in steam wishlist Im just waiting for a sale, and I have plenty to play while waiting.

The last 3 games I purchased at full price on release were Dark Souls 3, Fallout 4, and Guild Wars 2.  It's not so much the price as it is my backlog.  At some point I realized, by the time I'm going to play this game it's going to be $20-$30 full price.

This backlog is so long that the Witcher 3 will be retro by the time I get to it and I won't know the difference because I haven't played a game from this generation yet anyway.

Since pretty much every game follows the DLC path nowadays, it's like you are getting an incomplete game when you buy at launch.

I'm not one of those people who wants to come back to a game repeatedly for DLC, etc.  I find it's best to just wait until they are finished releasing the actual content before buying.
In other words, I rarely ever buy games when they are new.  I wait until the game development is actually completed.

Yeah for me it's boredom. I don't do FPS anymore so that leaves 3rd person and iso-view which I actually prefer. I do not share your love of POE so I'm actually quite game starved atm. Can't handle D3 anymore, if I have to do one more rift I'm going to puke. I'm waiting on the expansion for Grim Dawn which is coming any day now.

On the plus side it looks like 2019 will be good for us ARPG fans with the games slated to release. Once I have something to grind away on I'm not as likely to jump into a new game when it's released. That said I am enjoying the hell out of Anthem despite its flaws. I just hope they can fix it up/release the new content in a timely manner to ensure it's viability going forward.

Any way, what are your reasons for jumping into new games as they release. I understand it, if it was like 10 years prior, but today  . . . not so sure.
    1. Because I want to.
    2. Anthem is not a shit show, it has some bugs, sure but not nearly as bad as many other games I have seen released. Essentially EVERY MMORPG from WoW on has been an utter fuck story at release.
    3. I usually invest in the future and I realize what I am doing when I do it so I am not upset when it's not as advertised.
    4. I also refrain from developing ideas about how the game "will be" until I play it, so again not surprised.
    5. Having said all of that, it sucks that one has to lower and or remove all expectations of a decent game being released initially. The complete lack of development standards is sickening and one would hope that by this stage of this hobby development studios would have started taking pride in their products. If they do, I don't see it.

They keep releasing trash and we keep buying it. So yeah, at times I am part of the problem.

I'm not going to shoot down anyone who wants to buy a game first day and there are many good reasons to do it.

Reasons To Buy On Day One

    • You and your friends are going to play it together and you're all excited about it.  Something like Titanfall 1 where the main story was a co-op experience, was one fantastic example of this.  Borderlands 2 as well.
    • You review games.  No one cares about a review you do for a game that's been out six months, unless it's been a quiet sleeper that picked up steam later.  But if you're serious about getting your reviews noticed, you better be first.  In fact, these days you need to be better than first, and start getting some early access exclusives.
    • All of your friends already have it and are talking about it.  Yeah, this is arguably the worst reason of the ones listed, but if you want to be able to participate meaningfully in the conversation, or you don't want the entire plot of a story based game ruined by your blabbermouth buddies, then you might wanna get it when it comes out and stay ahead of your buddies.
    • You'll get left behind, or have a lot to learn.  There are games that I've kind of always wanted to try, but since I've put them off for so long, I feel like there's no way that I can be competitive now and the learning curve would be too high.  If I'm going to spend six months being bad at something because the rest of the crowd has been perfecting their skills for five years, then I'm not too interested.
Reasons Not To Buy On Day One

    • You're most likely going to save money.  Depending on the title and how long you can wait, a lot of money.  I like buy AC and FC games at least a year after they release.  They're single player, I don't care if others have already played through them, and if I can pick up AC Origins with all the DLC for $20 a year after it comes out, then I'm perfectly fine waiting a year.
    • You're waiting for reviews.  Early reviews are quite often really hot takes that are squeezed out as quickly as possible in order to get more views for ad revenue.  That long take review two weeks or a month after the game has been out is often a much better indicator.
    • Not worth the initial price point.  Perhaps there's a game out there that you'd like to give a whirl, but not at full retail price.  It interests you, but it's not "OMG MUST HAVE!"  Perhaps, they're really just charging entirely too much for the short amount of content.  Firewatch was a good game for $7, but at it's normal retail of $20, I would have been pissed I paid that much.
    • There's going to be a ton of DLC.  This one influences me to buy games later quite often.  I'll wait until I can get the full game and all of the DLC for one low price of 66-77% off.  Warhammer Total War was stupendously bad about this.  It has a crapton of DLC and if you bought the full game at launch and all of the DLC as it released for full price, then it would have cost around $200.  TW:Warhammer is a great game... at $60 total, but not at $200... not even close.
    • Your Steam Library is already full of crap you haven't played.  That's me.  Right here.  I'm guilty.  Honestly, I don't need any new games cause I've got a backlog of like 20 games that I haven't even installed.  Many of them 4x games that I'll dump months into when I do install them, so double the reason not to buy any more games.

Although i can agree this is sometimes the case, that just makes it simple for myself, why support a crappy game design? You should never feel like you are in a race,if SPEED and racing is part of the built in design, then it is a crappy design. This would lean towards just one of the reasons why pvp is such a bad idea,it is a RACE ,be higher level ,stronger, faster,FIRST and then you control the game.

Skipping the thousands of reasons and problems of game design,i can get right to the simple reason, gamers MOST of them don't have a clue what they want ,mostly they just join the crowd, the popularity vote.I find it almost comical all those streamers/players played and acted like they loved Fortnite, then a couple months later "this game sucks" and a train of streamers all FOLLOW each other, not back to PUBG oh no can't do that, they run for a NEW game and begin the RACE to the top yet again until they start complaining about that game.

So the more important question would be "WHY are so many gamer's buying into games they quit such a short time later?"The answer will be the same, tons of clueless people.,you can't argue when it is right in your face obvious.

But this is why games like Bless sell for way too much and people are buying garbage. The "I have to be first" mentality does nothing but cost alot of money and sorrow.

I feel bad for people playing games over the past 5 years-ish. Before then, it used to be nice to buy a game right when it released and get almost everything at launch (keep in mind over the past 10 years they did try to content gate stuff behind pre-order bonuses and 'day one dlc). Now people give money to companies day one in hopes they'll get the full game within a year lol. Patience truly is a virtue severely lacking in this day and age.

    Rules of engagement:
    - Always wait for player reviews, and spot check player walkthroughs.

    - Triple A games are always "hard broken" and takes months to fix.

    - Stay away from Triple A games anymore, their getting greedier to satisfy the investors.

    - Stay a year behind in releases of Triple A.  Cheaper and fixed.

-Stay away from graphically intense games... Their ALWAYS shallow !

Follow these rules and you'll never have a problem.

I think it's a clear indication of the poor state of new MMO's.  People would literally pay to play a MMO during pre-alpha or log into a 15 year old MMO than log into any one of the many free MMO's already released or MMOs they already paid for.  New MMO's are just too shallow to hold on to anyone for any length of time.
