I've had a chance to play Outlaws of the Old West over the past couple of days. Virtual Basement has created a drop-dead gorgeous world that one can literally get lost in. Its stunning vistas promise a game filled with the wonders of old time America and the thrill of discovery that that era brought to explorers, pioneers and bandits alike. Logging in, that's what I expected but the reality was something different.

And I don’t, but it’s enough for a decent experience if the gameplay is good.
They should try harder to complete more of the gameplay before trying to get cash from their customers.
Even if it's free, some things are not worth trying.....like Sushi.

"Customization options include gender, hairstyle and color, eye color, skin tone, and clothing color. I'm reasonably sure that more will be added in time." - it never is. Customization is as good as it gets.
"Perhaps the goal is to add some kind of tutorial over time, and I'd certainly be behind that." - it took a year and 3 months to update the quest system in DnL. Prepare for a long wait.
"The developers have grand plans to make this into a real MMO (if you count 100 or so people as enough for an MMO), but right now it's nothing like the excellent announcement trailer. It's a big open, poorly optimized world of nothing." - the devs of all the other games had big plans too, but sadly, all of them fell by the wayside as the player base dropped significantly after release. DnL had plans for 4 elemental dungeons, but only created three of them before they decided to take an ill-advised wrong turn. Instead, they created a completely different environment with different game mechanics (The Shard).
Snail seems to give these games a certain shelf-life for support, approx. a year. Once beyond it, support becomes almost non-existent and updates drop to an occasional very minor bug fix. Keep that in mind as this game will probably end up being the same. Get your enjoyment out of it while you can.

I also believe that Snail is the former NPCUBE who was sued but that i cannot prove because there is so very little information on NPCUBE and even Snail for that matter. However just like now,NPCUBE created a fake publisher that never published another game other than Dark N light,so i am seeing the exact same trends here.
What i do know is snail creates these FAKE new business entities, like this virtual Basement is just a fake name on paper, they seem to keep doing this because imo in case of lawsuits or bankruptcy and it is just real cheap to create a business name.It also seems like an attempt to fool people into thinking different studios but mark my words,it is the SAME studio, all under Snail games.
Anyhow their pricing is very good but this carries a double edged sword. At 15-30 bucks your paying for new art work, the game is already 99% completed for them with the template they use.
1It is a nice price for gamer's IF you only buy one of their games.
2 If you buy more than 1 game, you are just paying for mods, mostly graphic mods but yes the price seems fair.
NPCUBE was sued for stealing environment code, now unde a new entity Snail and each game having it's own fake developer and publisher they might very well be stealing or using the same code as 10 years ago.The change now is using the Unreal engine and Speedtree is part of Unreal licensing, they have it covered.
My synopsis, they will keep churning these out and very quickly as fast cash grabs, likely why we haven't seen a cash shop yet. What is annoying/bothersome is Snail like other studios pretends to be releasing unfinished games but then right after release/cash grab, they start on another game, leaving but a few to handle the last game.

I presumed it would have a 3rd person option simple based on it being snail games, and they have a 3rd person option for both D&L and Ark.
Anyone know if this has 3rd person? I was hoping to buy it at the sale price on steam, but cant do 1st person..

The Engine is Unreal 4, which did not exist ten years ago (released 2014) so saying it is based on the same "code" as Ark, is pretty accurate since they both use Unreal 4.
NPCube reached out to Snailgames with help publishing, Snail games had nothing to do with the lawsuit that VWORLD LLC brought against NPCUBE and Farlan Entertainment. Yes, NPCube was found guilty of using VWORLDS software and ended up paying restitution.
So no one (at least not as far as you can prove right now) is stealing anything nor are there any fake publishers or developers here. Snail games being the parent organization, but there are definitely different studios under that organization.
As you usual, your assertions are baseless and senseless.
It would be cool to see a western themed MMO get released, I would certainly like to play it.

Saw a couple streams this morning with them playing in 3rd person.
I think it would have been more interesting to wake up buried in that coffin and have to fight your way out (shallow grave). Or, how about you find yourself hanging from a tree and just before you blackout the rope breaks?

At the time EQ was garnering praise he had his own mmorpg that closely resembles what he is doing now a days with Ark/Atlas/DnL.His game was called Voyage Century and imo since he would have started making it around 96/7/8 was a pretty good game that had i know of it at the time,i likely would have played it.
Think about it,this guy delivered content ideas no other mmorpg had even to this very day, including Wow/Lotro/EQ whatever have not delivered. He had his sailing ships and if you look over all the expansions he added a lot of ideas that we see now.
So what it looks like now is he is redoing all his old work and ideas with newer graphics and modernizing the games he is making.
IMO and i have never played this outlaws game,it will be a decently good/addictive game to play and like his other games offer a more immersive rpg experience than actual rpgs.
Even after all the bashing i do of Snail,i thought about it,they are delivering in essence mods of the same game template,at least their pricing is fair and indicative of a mod.Imo if you have never played any game built by this guy, perhaps you should give one a go,imo they have good value, that is if you want a more immersive/plausible realism type game.If all you want from a rpg perspective is loot/quests,then eyah his games won't deliver, you have to go back to his Voyage century for that.

Here's the thing, early access is bad, no how cheap or whether gamers are unaware or intentionally obtuse to why.
In the case of this developer, they have three unfinished games atm with little incentive to actually do so.
Coming up next, a space game no doubt.
Finally, youtubers and streaming are a scourge on the landscape, and yet another sign of the coming apocalypse.
Watching other people play video games, about as dumb as it gets....
