Meridian 59 is one of the original MMOs, and it's still running. In fact, it's now on Steam for free! Completely free. And if you've never played it before, you should. Now. Immediately. Meridian 59 was one of the first graphical MMOs TheHiveLeader ever played, and now he's going to gush about it for like 9 minutes. Enjoy!

Well sworded, sir. And yet, I demand that any follow-up videos include a 2400 baud modem and a rotary phone (still the best of phones)! It just seems incomplete without dial-up sounds....

Playing that in 2019 not a chance in hell.I already own identical games like Might N mAgic Wizardry Ultima series and many others so this isn't earning any place in my already full portfolio.

If the developer was serious about bringing this back, this does not show it by trying to sell 1990's gaming in 2019 with no legit update.

After he gets paid to do this,he tosses the game in the trash...guaranteed.
This serves one purpose,to go over some nostalgic past but nothing more.

No selling. The game is 100% free. It runs simply so people can enjoy it.

I was appreciative of what meridian 59 helped do for the genre, but the game itself is REALLY bad.

The part with the kid holding the E button made me laugh, cause that's the type of things I made my little brother do when I had to do tedious tasks.
And best of all, he was absolutely delighted of spamming that single button for ages, with no idea of what was going on whatsoever.

    Good article.
... about a completely irrelevant game.  I don't see the point of this, except for history's sake.  Might have well put up a play through of Akalabeth.

"I don't see the point of this" - Sometimes a change of pace is good.

Would you rather have yet another article on how disappointing the newest looter shooter is? Yet another article on the newest update on a currently running MMO, of which there are probably dozens upon dozens of other articles stating EXACTLY the same thing on a dozen different websites?

I would MUCH RATHER see a play through of Akalabeth. That would at least be something different.
    So to each their own.

It's already been said, by HiveLeader himself no less. I want more articles and videos like this anyways. New MMOs and current MMOs are a dime a dozen and if someone wants information on them, you only need to hit google and type in the name. Hundreds if not thousands of articles, reviews, wikis, etc are provided to you.

I would love a series that explores old school MMOs or actually takes an indepth look at how these things have evolved over the years. I used to play The Realm Online, one of the first MMOs I ever picked up. These types of things are fun to see.

I also played The Realm! All I can remember about it though was being an Adventurer and desperately wanting a Black Sash.

I suppose there are people who just have no sense of anything before them as having value.

If I listened to people like them I'd never enjoy the amazing music and stories that I have access to today.

So YES on Meridian 59. Going to try it on Sunday. Thanks for the sell.

There is a 3d client of the game which also has some quality of life features.
Idk if it works with the steam version.

There are also some servers which offer some updates to the main game.

^ This.  I go to MMORPG.com.  I scroll through a bunch of news on the main page and click on...NOTHING.  I see this post and click immediately and watch the POD.

Great vid! I tried M59 a while ago, but had trouble getting it to run correctly on my system. Windows 10 didn't seem to agree with it.

Great to see coverage of some of the classics!

THL great vid. I've been playing some older MMOs myself lately to hold me over til pantheon (bet you couldnt guess I'm an EQ vet). I think you should do one on Anarchy Online (as it recently got its own progression server) or POTBS (which just switched hands back to people who have money... and is ALSO planning a "legacy server").

Both of those held my interest at their time, and POTBS never got its due I felt.

Looking forward to the next one as always.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

    Unforgiven,loved that movie ..:D

Yeah abandoned, that explains why it is still the same game.I can understand the nostalgia idea but like i said,i and everyone else have a hundred plus maybe a thousand plus games to trump this so it's not getting any play time.
If it did something unique then sure i can see a "reason"because it was my first mmorpg, nah not a good reason. For myself i bet in 20 more years FFXI will still be a UNIQUE design compared to all the rest of the copy cats,so i could go back and play that and still feel intrigued.

What makes it all the worse ,i have heard so many complain about that dude's mmorpg ,the guy who was arguing with Chris Robert's and yet it is 100x better than Meridian. So yeah i just can't see any reason to play it in 2019.I think if i had to choose between  Meridian/moba and a arpg i would just watch movies or the news..or walk the dogs.

Sadly through all the crap that comes through the turnstiles, the best game of all the recent stuff, one that actually would be nice to see a bit of talk over, the Wolfenstein game is on the sister site...sigh.
