NCSoft is like the bratty spoiled child that shows everyone their toys but then whines and complains if someone touches them.

Seriously I don't understand why they care if a private server is up as long as it's not making a profit. If they are that up their own ass about COH, re-release the damn thing and make money off of it again. People *liked* it, I *liked* it, and I'm not one to like superhero games!
do you even understandf how ignorant your statement is ? Think gamers have a delusion that things they have no rights to, are theirs for the taking, now I wont get political, but this is trend that is building and it will destroy everything in its wake...
Entitled to playing a game they purchased, while also providing the server support services required to actually play the game they purchased after the original seller decides they don't want to be bothered with providing it anymore?

Yes, I could see how that attitude sets up society to completely and utterly destroy itself....

I wonder, if Ford announced that you'll no longer actually own the car you purchase from them because its design contains intellectual property...  Instead, you're merely leasing the car until they decide they just really don't wanna manufacture any more parts for it, at which point they then force you to return the car or permanently park it and never use it again in favor of purchasing a new car...  Would you guys still be espousing this same "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?" nonsense?
Well since in the US anyway, you actually own the Ford car if you buy it.  This does not give you the right to copy the car and go around selling Ford copies. In addition you do not have to use only ford parts on your ford car so this part of you statement makes little sense.
As far as the game goes, you only purchased the game client which is the part that is on your computer and paid a monthly fee for access to the game servers. You did not purchase the server software.
If you so want to play CoH then go work on an EMU but don't expect to use stolen software.
They are much less likely to shut down and EMU but then that didn't stop blizzard so who knows.

This place is really pathetic. Look at the analogies of those actually defending NCsoft. They are ridiculous, not grounded in any sort of reality, and would get you freakin expelled from any sort of serious philosophical discourse. Bottom line is NCsoft loses nothing by allowing these servers to exist, and the option is always there to sanction them if they wish to protect their IP.

No one seems to understand why companies do this. It's not greed really, and it isn't because they care about the IP. They don't care if someone is taking their old junk. They want the game gone, because they think it hurts their brand for it to exist. They think that if they can stop people from experiencing something for free, they should. It's a business theory that is toxic and borderline evil. It's the same in every industry with patents and trademarks and copyrights. They will stop people from getting things even if there is no logic to it, because deprivation is its own reward.

With MMORPGs in general, it's become a disgusting act to take servers offline, provide no way for individual players to preserve and enjoy the game they paid for, and just bury everything with no intention of ever utilizing any of the assets, technology, writing, etc that was put into it.  It's a very rare art form that allows utter destruction as the eventual result.

I don't care about NCSoft but the patents, copyright, ect laws exist. If people don't like existing laws then they should work to get the laws changed. Ignoring or just breaking existing laws is certainly not the solution. I certainly don't want to live in a lawless society and I doubt you do either.

NCSoft had ample offers to buy/lease CoH.  Those offers went on for years.   They weren''t willing to take any of them (probably due to the affront and loss of face around making a public mistake).   Thus, they'll now reap the whirlwind.   The code is out, and they'll never be able to stop this sort of behavior.   Private servers will pop up.  NCSoft's only choice is how they'll react to this and what effect it will have on their PR.

You're sitting here advocating for the theft of a product, solely because the owner of that product wasn't willing to sell it to someone else? This is the very height of entitlement.

The code was out when the Lineage 2 official files were leaked as well, NCSoft issued cease and desists to all of the major servers, none of which exist anymore as a result. NCSoft has a legal dream team at its disposal, who have already been tested previously in this exact same scenario and are proven to take these types of actionable issues seriously. They will not just let this slide.

Also, keep in mind that a cease and desist is only step one, a warning meant to get the attention of the accused parties so that further action does not have to be taken. However, further action can easily be taken if need be. You're exceptionally ignorant if you think they can't clean this up. One of the users on this very site ran the largest L2 server at that time and I'm sure he can verify that you couldn't be more wrong. NCSoft is more than capable of dealing with this and they most assuredly will.

Anyone who thinks NCSoft can't do anything about this is in for a major surprise and entirely deserving of the end result.

Not surprised what happened, knowing how "I-am-more-purer-than-you-just-ignore-that-I-am-a-troll" types like to troll private operations of a shades of grey nature, not that I condone such private activities of course. I would also not be surprised if the now released code is spread out to CoH servers very far away from the legal boundaries of C&D threats just to get a CoH server up and running, with the trolling establishment spending all of these resources chasing CoH game hosts and players and letting terrorists blow up churches and other buildings without catching them instead, lol. What a world.

It's their IP, they can do whatever they want with it.

And since people bought access, not the game itself, they don't really have to much recourse.

From now on don't pay 60 dollars to buy into accessing a game and you'll feel better. Problem solved.

So much emotion in this thread, and even more worrying, thinking that a company has these same emotions, hate, spite, pestering etc. etc. Its ridiculous. NCSoft has to do absolute Jack and Shit with their IP, simply because its THEIR IP. If they aren't doing anything with it its simply because its not profitable enough. Not out of spite, not because there isn't any sort of profit being made, but simply because it isn't profitable enough, its the bloody reason they closed the game in the first place. And they have every right to do so, some people need a serious reality check here.

Spoken like someone who's never created anything themselves. IP laws are an important protection for people and companies that put vast resources and knowledge into making new "products". Stealing someones IP is absolutely no different then having someone break into your house and steal your tv, assuming you actually paid for the tv yourself. That tv is yours, you went to work to earn money to buy it and nobody else has a right to simply come take it because they want a tv and can't earn one themselves.

Everyone has their panties in a bunch how much they hate NCSOFT blah blah blah.  The real story, it was 4chan that tricked the server admins into thinking a C&D was sent from NCSOFT.  With fear the servers were wiped and they tried to clean their hands of it until someone found an issue and pointed it out.

So in other words it was a troll, a successful troll as 4chan is known to do.

This has been an interesting week and a half-ish for City of Heroes, I'm purposely sitting back & enjoying the ride now.

The main thing I was amazed about was the fact that private server ran in secrecy for 6 years, and of course now the fact we're able to play again is an added bonus.

Now it's just a waiting game to see what/if anything NCSoft does. I don't think they are going to do anything personally.

    Blah blah blah.

I understand the challenges of copyright law. NCSoft was required to take action. I'm not new to this game.

But ultimately, it is NCSoft that chose not to sell these properties, which have no value to them, to an interested party. They are just another dragon hoarding treasure that they have no want nor use for. It's high time to slay that dragon.
I just picked your post out of many to quote that all were saying in essence the same thing.  Apparently a troll posing as a lawyer caused all of this.  The server team is new at this and panicked.  NCsoft did not send a C&D letter.  As far as I know, NCsoft still has not said anything about the private servers.

So there is hope... Honestly, I am pretty well convinced that NCsoft wrote off the value, a process that finished April 15th, or whatever tax day is in South Korea.  At this point they still own the IP but it is evidently of no value to them accounting-wise.  So how will this whole drama play out in the future?  No one knows...

The value is if at some point in the future they decide they want to use it.

They can sit on it, make a new mmo out of it, make a mobile game out of it or put the likeness on a pin ball machine. They could put it in a book, or place it in a nook, or tippy, tippy, tippy toe to place it on a hook!

It's theirs to use when they want to use it. That's what owning an IP is all about. It's theirs. Theirs. They own it. Theirs.

It's as if some players can't understand that a company doesn't have to immediately use something they own. They can wait until it's advantageous to do so. Or, eventually, if they do think they won't use it they can sell it.

The bad faith of some gaming companies does not mean it is fine to steal the game and run it for yourselves. I do appreciate that with no recourse this could seem like a fair option for fans, but it is not.

So much this.  Think about an even more serious example-- my company once aquired the rights to a drug which treats a fairly serious illness (but one which you have to contract with your own bad behavior) and we raised the price quite a lot, because we were the only ones who could provide it.  The public immediately became furious that we would do such a thing, but we used that money for further research and to aquire other properties.

Obviously, this is a much more serious issue because people who couldn't afford it died.  But hey, people die.  And if a bunch of low-income people (who aren't being terribly creative OR productive) die because they can't even afford medicine, at least the rest of society can benefit from the future efforts of the company.

"But my beloved cousin didn't deserve to die" is the kind of nonsense we heard.  But what difference does it make if a few people who are sitting on their hands get rolled into a box or two?  Obviously developing new drugs isn't cheap.   That's what all of these generic pharma companies overseas are threatening.  They illegally manufacture drugs that WE OWN.   WE OWN THEM.   They're OURS.  WE OWN THEM.  And they idiotically sell them here in the US because the inept customs people can't recognize clearly-labeled boxes of illegal medications, apparently.

Anyway, obviously if NCSoft doesn't want you to play City of Heroes, then you should listen to NCSoft.   They aren't trying to hurt you, they are trying to make the most of their properties to better their business to deliver superior products to you.  Stop acting like just because you love (OR need) something that it belongs to you.   It doesn't.   Not in whole or in part.   It belongs to someone worth a damn who actually knows how to turn a profit.
