Activision-Blizzard has released its Q1 2019 financial results and have beaten expectations. The company projected $1.715 billion in revenue and achieved $1.825B, though that number is significantly lower than Q1 2018 that saw nearly $2B brought in. ATVI suggested that the strong performance came at the hands of its core franchises including Overwatch League business operations and the sale of five teams to cities participating in the Call of Duty city-based league.

Those numbers sound nice when you lay off a quarter(?) of your staff and then rehiring them for less pay in the following quarter. GJ indeed Acti-Blizz.

Hard for me to hate since I’m actively playing OW, but the WoW devs really piss me off.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

When companies are "struggling" - relative term - its not unusual for the most pessimistic financial projections to be used. That way anything over can be heralded as a triumph.

What they are celebrating is a drop of nearly 10%.

A true triumph would have been growth of maybe 10% getting close to $2.2B say.

This here is exactly what is wrong with number posting.
These are NOT FACTUAL numbers, just a lot of nicely worded phrases to give the APPEARANCE that everything is great for investors.

They follow some "guidelines/standards"but says who,who accepted these numbers, themselves making claims of following standards?
Obviously i don't know what blizz/acti does every single day but there is sooooooo much that can change EVERYTHING about what they are trying to portray here.Expenditures, just because they laid off a bunch of low paid employees wouldn't offset guys like Kotick paying themselves 20+ million with included bonuses and shares etc etc.Like Kotick's yearly worth would likely pay for every single laid off employees wage for the year. Then you have all the other LEECHES,the Morheim's and the board all the top execs.

Moving aside from wages,if SPENDING is up and revenue down from last year and that is only IF these numbers are decently accurate, then it is NOT good management.
What this operation has done in the past like many businesses do is defer revenue from one quarter to another based on predicting better numbers perhaps in another quarter so they can make a bad quarter look better to investors. It can of of course backfire if that predicted quarter does poorly but usually if they know a game or expansion release is going to happen it is a guaranteed upswing in profits.

None the less, unless they post actual book keeping records,ALL of them, this is just a business manipulating the outlook of the business to better attract investing as well make the business look good in the public's eye.

Even if they follow GAAP standards by 100%,it is still NOT entirely accurate, they are just standards. How often have we been seeing in the news corruption within governments and money is always involved.it always ends up with oh i didn't know or wasn't given enough information to formulate a better result etc etc yada yada.

I am so skeptical of corruption when comes to money that even if a certified accountant did an AUDIT"which this declaration is NOT" that some gray areas would be omitted/ignored and or the accountant is somehow a friend with the business.I only have to look at charities and how they continue to bend the law and rules to make 6 figure and millions of dollars but still able to claim non profit ..lol and still go under the guise as being a charity and not a business.

You cannot trust ANYONE when it comes to money and it will remain that way for another hundred years or as long as money is the root of all that is evil.

Yeah it was a pretty smart move, I am hoping they use better than hoped projections to get some more projects off the ground.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

Their growth has been stagnating for a while, and with Destiny gone, hardly any D3 content, OW stable, but flat, BoA being more of the same, and instead of creating content, is focused on cash stop sleight of hands, and SC2 just there. Laying off the employee's is simply a way on paper of showing increased profits, then rehiring them @ a lower rate ensures projects get done and those profits moving forward, unless those still playing decide to leave. So yes, all this is, is a way to manipulate the situation to look like more profits than there actually are, through wage control. It's their right, but it is not right, and it's already taken a toll on not only company morale, but their player base is getting tired. They'll still make a fair bit of scratch for years to come, but they're leaving themselves wide open for other developers to permanently take that business from them.

Anybody else looking at those MAUs in the King Division and worried about the future of our passion? I don't think it's beatable, what company doesn't want to chase those kinds of numbers? I love my 27" monitor I don't want to play on a phone.... (sniff)

Thinking of your phone screen as the future of mobile gaming is short sighted.

    Q4 2018 - Blizzard MAUs were down 2 million to 35 million
    Q1 2019 - Blizzard MAUs were down 3 million to 32 million

/me (proud) one of those ..
Losing 5 mil active users in just 2 Q's is .. very bad!

Edit: As a comparation YoY , in Q1 2018 Blizzard had 38 mil vs 32 mil MAUs in Q1 2019.
    Activision in Q1 2018 had 51 mil vs 41 mil in Q1 2019.

Do you mean last year as in the year where they made their most revenue ever by far?

Yeah ....that must have been a terrible year for them.

It's been a couple of years since Blizzard released last new game. Games have limited lifespan, and they're going to continue losing players until they release something new.

I wonder how you came into that conclusion. Isn't it clear enough that it's Blizzard reporting this? Shouldn't mmorpg.com cover it in your opinion?

Anyone looking just at King's MAUs would conclude that mobile is declining.

They only lost 13M in the last year though so things are improving. 2 years ago they had 342M, 3 years ago they had 405M .... and it was even higher than that!

I am pretty sure they have delivered better than expected results every quarter though ... whats a few hundred million MAUs anyway!
