Speaking in inventions, I stopped playing CoH shortly after they were added...  At what level should I be looking to add invention enhancements as opposed to the regular ole enhancements that drop?
Well at lower levels they are not worth it but at about 25 the basic inventions will give a good enough boost to be better than the Single Origin ones especially because they never expire and stay at the same potency. I start using them at level 15 when I do the tutorial where you get the standard IO, one of them for free. I do this because I dislike buying the double origins but the AH has the double origins sometimes even cheaper than the shops.

As for the special IOs that give bonuses when you use a set you can start using them at around 20 or so but some of them have every expensive ingredients. I think may be saving for them and getting them later might be a better idea but I enjoy getting them because if I have the ingredients and influence/infamy I just make them. At 20 though the SOs may be more beneficial in terms of percentages. I like having the bonuses from the sets .
    Very insightful.  Thanks chey!

If I invent something I would expect to have that copyrighted to me unless I decided to give it up. Which I actually have to do as a matter of public record. So I don't agree. However the inventions can be "licensed" to other individuals what we have here is no license being issued. That's their right, I understand copyright it is a minimum of 70 years? Though it does rather resemble a child who won't lend his toys.

I am still holding out that NCsoft wakes up and decides to look at CoH again, here I may be hopelessly optimistic. By the way I think this may only be the second time in my life I have been called a virtue signaller. :)

I don't think things are that black and white. The rules for copyright favour the owners heavily because people with money have made sure it's that way. To me, NC Soft may own it, but they chose to shut it down because the studio they created pulled some shenanigans (apparently). They haven't done much with the IP aside from throw some of the major characters into a different type of game, and that game is gone now too. So I don't care if they own it. They could have done something with the game to avoid this situation.
If I were them I'd start the game back up again as a hosted community project. Start the old servers back up, charge some minimal subscription fee or allow content creators to sell their creations through an NC run store and they take a cut. The community would support and take care of any new development, NC would only need to do some oversight.
They could even do it as a CF project, 'just pay us to keep the servers up' to start with. But this would not reflect well with corporate image, that would no doubt be a concern if they contemplated that path.

Intellectual property rights protect individuals, who may well have not had two pence to rub together. When you have corporations holding IP's then you are talking big money, which in turn leads to a legal labyrinth to protect them, but this is not just about money it is about the rights of a person or group to retain ownership of what they created.

As you say they could have done something with this game, that's the crux of it to me, they let fans down so do bear some responsibility, but they have the right to that. It is possible to hold to conflicting views and not resolve them, that's where I am on this.

If NCSoft had any intention to launch COH/COV again, even in maintenance mode, then i wouldn't agree with the emulations etc. But they aren't and given the number of years that have passed they clearly have no intention to use the IP again, so if people launch servers that allow people who originally bought the game to play that game again, then good on them i hope it does well and maybe even gives NCSoft the much needed 'kick up the backside' to maybe rethink their policies on games and profit margins. ;)

i thought talking about private servers is a no no?

For forum posts, keep it to our private server discussion subforum. And we only allow the discussion of private servers for games that are no longer live.
Pretty big distinction between emulation and utilizing actual stolen binaries and source code though, no?

So in principle, this site is supporting the theft of intellectual property by even allowing this discussion at all.

I think I'm done here, this is beyond unethical to say the least. I've seen a lot of questionable things take place here over the years, but this takes the cake.
Please go troll some other website, your ridiculousness is not appreciated here.

i wouldn't bother with io sets until you have sufficiant fundings which is more likely not gonna happen until level 40+ on your first character.
once the ball gets rolling and you can make money reliably, you can fund your alts easily though.

for instance, i like doing the doctor kahn task force in founder's fall. it's for level 45+ and it's pretty quick to do (an hour or so). you get to kill 5 AV and you have a good chance at dropping a purple recipe at the end that can sell for 20m+.
another quick to complete TF is the katie hannon task force in croatoa (level 30~34). a good group can clear it in 30m and it nets some good rewards.
farming merit (through story arcs, TF's and ouroboros arcs) is also a very good way to get funds (and badges).
you buy IO set recipes through the merit vendor that sell for good money in the AH and you make money (or complete one of your io set).

    It depends.

Some really good IO sets cap at 30, so why not get them at 27?  If you are missing Knockback resistance, why not add the KB resist enhancement from the Karma defense set as soon as you can?  It is exactly the same no matter what the level.  Then add the defense/ endurance reduction enhancement at 30, so you get the most out of it.  Not only do you fill a gap in your mez resistance, but you get a bit of a buff for the power you slot it in, as well as a small buff to your endurance recovery.  I added these two to Combat Jumping for my Dark Armor Scrapper (no KB resist in set).

Some cap at 40 (there are no higher level versions), like Impervium Armor.  This set has some of the best set bonuses as well as one enhancement that adds psi resist, which is rare in this game.  Get the highest level versions and slot them at 37.

If a set caps at 50, then wait until then to get them. and just use SOs and simple IOs until then.

If you wait for stuff you will never enjoy a game. Wait till you're level 40 or 45 before you start collecting when the thing is available at lower levels is not having fun. So what if it is not that great at lower levels. I love collecting sets even at low levels that give me some mez protection and may be I can do +3 missions because I am making the investment at lower levels. So I'm broke all the time but damn it is nice to look at my almost complete sets yes 2 out of 6 is almost.

I love to do story arcs and I stop my experience and finish it before I outlevel the contact. I am told often "why bother just Ouroboros it" but you know I like to do them at the level I encounter them even if it may not be the best way to do them since I am still not outfitted well enough... call me crazy but I don't want to play like some old hand or bored veteran. I still enjoy shouting about asking for help to kill Doctor Vahzilok. It's part of playing the game. Enjoy it and make the most of it while the servers are up.

you play your way and enjoy it, i play my way and enjoy it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

anyways i was talking specifically about influence to buy IO sets on your first character. there is no reason to waste ressources in a set when you can roll perfecly fine with normal IO's or SO's until you can afford sets.
once you are 40+, money will start rolling more or less depending on what you do.

When I got some WTFs however I realised it isn’t about other opinions, its about emotional entitlement and trying to mitigate the discomfort that comes from being confronted with your own morally ambigious behaviour.

What you say goes both ways and both sides have definitely contributed, so lets not act like this behaviour has been one sided.

    22. You can start crafting and equipping 25s at 22 and they are basically as good as SOs, only they don't expire, so you can keep them throughout the rest of your leveling experience.

This is a discussion forum.  Anything presented here is an opinion by default.

There's also no need for anyone to share any opinion, either pro or con.  Certainly expressing an opinion that doesn't comply with a majority consensus doesn't give anyone on either side a right to attack or insult another.  That includes trying to discourage others from posting.  "Just shut up" does not make a valid point, it is only a passive aggressive way of dismissing another point of view.

It is an absolute fact that this is my opinion.

Ethical, Moral, and Legal are often not coterminous.

Anyway, the Genie is out of the bottle on this one.   IF NCSoft had offered a reasonable alternative, they could have been getting our money for the last 7 years.  Now it's out on the wind....

Morals and legality aside - am I the only person who tried to play this but had too much anxiety to really do so?  Rationally, I know I probably can't get in trouble and at worst I am wasting my time building a character on a server that will be taken down.  Its weird.  I can only compare it the anxiety I had the last time I tried to masturbate in my home office with the door locked but my whole family was home and awake.  The anxiety just ruins it.  Hitting my 40s must have completed my transition into a perfect square and law-abiding pansy.

Ha! TMI on your comparison by the way. T M I

I'm not worried at all. If by some weird stroke of bad luck they decided to single out an individual player like me, or you, a parent with kids, I could probably get all the legal defense money I need from a GoFundMe with all the love for this game with their great community and hate for NC. It would be a PR nightmare for NC I think as well. And I don't know if there are any precedents to attack a player for connecting to an unofficial shared server. If the decision goes against them it would be a big lose. I have bought and paid for the game, 3 times, (actually 5, found a couple cheap copies in a bargain bin somewhere) and paid for multiple subscriptions for years. Courts recently do seem to side in favour of consumer rights fairly often.
