One Borderlands 3 fan with terminal cancer will be playing Borderlands 3 in June. Trevor Eastman had taken to the Borderlands 3 Reddit last month to talk about his diagnosis with esophageal, stomach and liver cancer and to ask fellow Redditors to help him reach out to Gearbox and 2K to play the game early. As a result of the collective effort, Eastman said that representatives will be flying out with a copy of the game for him to play. "Thank you all for making this dream come true," he wrote.

I won't be buying Boarderlands 3 anytime soon because of Gearbox's recent exclusivity decisions, but this is a good gesture, a good story, & should be applauded.

Shame they couldn't also set his friends up with copies or set up some other group for multiplayer. He should get to experience this game as it's meant to be played.

Its called kindness, yes more can be done, the world could always be more kind. But why not be happy for a dying child thats getting there wish? Theres lots of dying children that get nothing. So why not just be happy for the few that do? I agree that theres worse problems in the world then this 1 kids death, but to shine a negative light on a positive moment in a childs happiness is truly pathetic. This isnt anything crazy there doing......like building monuments to him. Its nothing extremely special or even difficult to do, but its being done to make a kid happy.

1st post so your probably a regular poster here, under a fake tag, to hide your bitter alter ego. Theres enough bad in this world, its nice to see good gestures, dont spoil it with your sad outlook.

The only thing pathetic here is your opinion on the topic.

When I was in the Corps we had a kid (a few actually) that wanted to be Marines when they grew up, so they got the opportunity to come hang out with us for a day. In my opinion, if it can happen, it should.

Good on 2K for doing this.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

This is really amazing of them!

If I played these games, I would buy and play their game, but reality is, I don't.. but still, wonderful gesture!

Well, hopefully you don't experience the same horrible illness so that you, in an entirely physically and emotionally exhausted state have to choose how to spend your last days.

The people I've known who had such horrible illnesses can barely do anything.

As someone who has (thankfully) survived a bout with cancer, I can tell you that escaping into a video game is a much-welcomed relief from the terror that that diagnosis brings. Sleep is rarely a respite as the dreams that come at the hands of chemotherapy treatments and medications to take away the pain are often worse than the waking "dreams" and thoughts that haunt you.

I could never sit up long enough to play for extended periods of time -- after all, I worked full time in those days teaching 2nd grade. But I can definitively tell you that the few hours a week I could manage in Neverwinter Nights playing through a campaign with four other players were the few hours a week when I could "be" strong and healthy. It took my mind off being sick from chemotherapy and from being in pain due to two extensive surgeries. It kept me from wondering if I would live to see my then 2-year-old grow up. It blew away the abject horror that the process of dying brings to anyone who's faced a life-threatening disease. It's less about dying but more about how you will die that frightens so much.

We're all human. We all are frightened at the prospect of how we will exit this world. When faced with imminent demise, we withdraw and try to hide from the terror. Games provide release.

Is this young man any different than thousands of others? No, he is not. We'll all travel that road one day, but how lucky he is that he advocated for himself and that others took up his cause. If joy can be brought to one suffering human, so be it. It is through something as simple as helping one person at a time that the world will become a better place.

And to you, @avenging, or whatever your alt name is, I say this: If your thoughts about doing something good for the world and doing something worthwhile to make a mark includes bashing a dying human being, then I reject your brand of "kindness". When your time comes, and it will, I hope that you have people around you who love you and look after your best interests.

As to not give certain people any more time than they deserve, I appreciate 2K making even the smallest gesture of kindness to help this person enjoy their final days. While they may seem insignificant to masses of people in this world, and while they are one of many who will die of cancer, I am happy knowing the world isn't made of stone. It is much easier to do nothing, but a lot of people took it upon themselves to be selfless, and I think that is also worth celebrating. We don't get news like this often enough. With how much awful stuff happens in the world daily (someone once told me 1620 people die of cancer daily in the US) I think we all deserve a win.

If you died this moment, would you really want your mark to be insulting someone dying of cancer on the Internet?

It's posts like his/hers that make me really question how crazy some people can be.

From what I can tell it's a whiny person who hasn't accomplished anything, projecting that onto the suffering of others because they get to play a fucking video game before them. That or it's someone just trolling forums for a reaction.

Good on 2K for doing this.

are you intentionally being stupid?... comparing kids who want to be marines with this guy... clearly the fact that he found out he was dying and the biggest worry for him is not being able to play borderland 3 tells me everything I need to know about him and his life... to all the other idiots on here supporting him, NEWSFLASH a starving kid who has cancer won't be making a reddit post to asking to play borderland 3... clearly this "child" lived off his parents and did absolutely nothing productive his entire life, he was 100% an entitled neckbeard... wonder what all these SJW on here talking about the amazing thing this is have done to make an actual difference...

His last wish has ZERO impact on you, and here you are bashing someone that you don't even know who is dying. Who gives a fuck? Is this going to impact you playing this game or your day to day life in the least? Is he hurting anyone as a result?

You're right... go gives a fuck? no one... and no one should... thats the point... him dying of cancer has no impact on any one or anything... so why should he get to play borderland 3 before the rest of us... did him having cancer some how make him better than us? the answer, since you clearly have your head up your ass, is no it does not make him better than any of us... my problem is that here are people on this forum who think they should give a fuck about this and that's my problem... my problem is all the neckbeards including you who think this was news worthy or that it's okay for some random insignificant neckbeard should get to play the game ONLY because he has cancer... if he went into a swamp full of cancer causing chemicals to save a drowning kid and that caused him to get cancer then, sure by ALL means let him play the game before the rest of us, build him a monument in game like the petitioner on reddit want, hell build him a borderland 3 monument in real life... newflash, he didn't do anything to get cancer he is just one of 1620 people who die of cancer every day in U.S. are they going to let every one of those people play borderland 3 before us? nope. are they going to let every one of the cancer patients who love borderland 3 play borderland 3 before us? no... they are going to let 1 person who has cancer play borderland 3 before us... the fact he has cancer is a non-issue, the fact that this neckbeard felt entitled enough to ask for and gets to play borderland 3 before us is the issue... but people on here clearly have their entire head up their ass to see that... smdh....
Kindness is a precious commodity of which we can use a lot more, I agree. But instead of contributing to kindness you take away from it, focussing on yourself. Some people react angry to what you write, I won’t. I feel sorry for you, because if you knew better you would act better. So have a hug, everybody needs more kindness, from the dying kid getting his last wish to the angry frustrated forum poster. Always respond with kindness, it will always win.
