Off topic. Kinder eggs are legal starting this year I believe it was. They made them change something about them can't remember, but you can buy them everywhere now.

Isn't it like a Kinder Joy or something now? I believe the change was that the toy included in the egg has to be removed and placed separately from the egg.
(It wasn't a gambling related issue, but rather a choking hazard issue that made Kinder eggs illegal.)

That is correct: in the US you cannot have something that is non-food completely surrounded by food - no matter how big it is

I totally deny smuggling them in for Christmas
So would that not make strippers hiding in cakes at bachelor parties hilariously illegal by that definition?
Now I wonder who had predicted the exact same thing on these boards. Hmmm....

To be fair EA has the most uninspiring boxes in the industry - either items are bland (like in recent Star Wars Battlefront) or there is way too much useless crap in them (Mass Effect Andromeda).
I don't even understand - why would they defend these boxes? It's difficult to believe they are getting substantial income from the boxes.
FIFA and Madden "Packs" work in the exact same way as lootboxes. FIFA is a cashcow worldwide and Madden likely isn't too far behind
I do not believe that renaming it change the product and issues around "lootboxes".
The mechanics are still the same, you pay for a digital container, and gamble a random prize.
That the prize may be suprising does not make it a different product by renaming the container.

As I stated before, lootboxes are a form of gacha, and there are numerous references acknowledging its addictive and gambling.
"Gacha can be played responsibility, but it is also a system that is designed to entrap players. It is, after all, Gambling. Gacha is designed to pull from expendable incomes (especially from those with huge incomes)… but it is designed to exploit. The rich. The gambling addicted. The intoxicated. The emotional. The foolish."

If only these morons knew how to question them properly. Ask them what parameters they used to design the lootboxes oh sorry surprise boxes. Why was there a price on it if it is intended to be a surprise mechanic. Isn't making money off them by repeated purchases the main modus to gain money.
Isn't profiting from the poor impulses of people who gamble the main reason for the 'surprise'mechanic. If they were trying to fill a niche and help people who enjoy surprise mechanics why place an element of chance on the outcome and a purchase for that chance. There should also be a choice to purchase the same item without the surprise mechanic. The very fact that they placed a random outcome means they intended to profit from that random factor and the fact that people will try to obtain the item by repeated purchases makes it a gamble.
I SERIOUSLY guffawed until tears were streaming down my face. While I get his point, I'm just...speechless.
Oh and bonus points for using "adroitly" for the first time in an article title...it's only taken a decade. All on a Wednesday too!
LOL!!!! OMG, this is just priceless.
So nice of EA to think we really are all morons to the point where calling it something different is all of a sudden going to sucker us

That begs a question who is actually the moron here.

If you don't like the price, product, business model or w/e, just move on. Not everything on the market must be tailored to you.
While certainly entertaining watching people being triggered going ape mode, it is quite scary at the same time.
Unregulated gambling.
But after a while even more games will have lootboxes, because it's easy cash grab.
And we will have a situation, when I can't purchase any game, because all of them will have lootboxes.
But hey! Gdemami said "move on! it'll be ok!"...
