It may be the start of the Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers early access period, but that doesn't mean things are going smoothly. Players have been reporting issues for the last couple of hours and it turns out that FFXIV servers are under DDoS attack. The attacks began at about 12:30 pm Pacific / 3:30 pm Eastern today and Square is looking into countermeasures.

    schadenfreude:

    noun

satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune.

Sadly, because ruining a persons fun is the whole point. It's such a shame that there are some really sick  puppies out there.

Sometimes the best way to get a message across to a company is to hurt their customers or their earning potential.

Not trying to justify or condone this but people act like it's so far fetched for some reason. None of these big companies are anyones friend.

I don't really get why people can't fathom why an individual would want to disrupt a giant faceless corporation who makes millions flipping the same games every generation.

It could be one of the competitor, not everyone play nice in this world. Corporate sabotage is actually quite normal.

It seems like a DDoS attack on an expansion launch seems to be as normal as server crashes.

In this example I'd rather see the "big faceless corporation" be rid of "those trying to give a message" by throwing them in jail.

Because what these people are doing is saying "me me me me me" it's all about "them" and what they want no matter what other players want.

"The Big Faceless corporation" makes a product. That's it. One can either buy it or not. But when a small group of people are willing to shit on other people because "they want to be heard" I don't feel for them at all and makes me wish there was a way to prosecute them.

I can't wait until IPV6. CIA informant leaked a couple years ago that even through VPN IPV6 communications require certain headers to remain intact with the same starting IP address or "the entire chain will break."

Net anonymity will be gone and the internet will serialize attributing every bit and byte to a person or machine.

We'll burn away the chaffe like this guy in no time whoever he is. He skates the system because he can...but when the internet serializes we may even find out who did the DDOS.

Can someone explain to me how DDoS works and why people always act like there's some random hater who was able to take down a multi-million dollar IP infrastructure? Isn't that a bit scary?

When a company like Cloudflare promises DDoS protection, is that a load of marketing BS?

Until I can learn, I'm going to ignorantly be a skeptic and think DDoS is the new "my dog ate it" excuse for downtime. A little schooling right now would be appreciated.

Yea you know how Cloudflare has its "DDOS protection"? It's because it's making the invidual rays more and more public and less and less secure so there's less avenues of attack.

If you ever see a RDP (Ray Down Page) as its called you can almost always inject into a XSS through Cloudfare and get complete Sql/NOsql dumps on the entity.

Cloudfare rays when down allow just about anything to happen to host which has lead many to believe Cloudfare is opening up all it can so it can reduce less attack opportunities.

It's been a smooth launch up to the attacks.

Usually ddos attacks are a small or single person group using a bot network.

    .... Probably a scholar player.
  • LackingMMOLackingMMO Member RarePosts: 664
Honestly these groups that do this are pretty much the biggest losers of the mmo community. They are the ones that act like they are the best but usually mediocre at best. They are the ones that usually cause a wipe and immediately rage on everyone else, usually first to rage quit. Sadly they are a plague both pve and pvp games. There really needs to be harsher penalties for people that do stuff like this.

Good. Big companies have to much a strangle hold on the markets. We the people need to bring these big companies down, and make them split up into smaller companies. AOC has said big companies are a massive issue because how anti-consumer they are, and its true. They are only out for themselves, and are a danger to society.
Maybe in certain cases but in this industry indies haven't really proved anything though. Indies are in this eternal early access con that a lot of people fall for and then when they don't fix things its because its in EA! Now its just in a never ending production phase that they continually need money for bur never deliver. Square actually releases quality products, followed by quality content, how is that a bad thing?

I would prefer fun, entertaining games and it doesn't matter if its a big or small company, what matters is what is being put out.

And yes I know this has to be a troll response but I couldn't resist.

Seriously who even cares why they do it? These people have virtually no impact at all on these companies and only really hurt the people they are trying to crusade for. (The customers) All this at the risk of jail time. The script kiddies will never learn.

If I wanted to don my tinfoil hat, I would argue that ruining people's experience was the whole point. Latest BfA update did not stem the bleeding of players to FFXIV and other mmorpgs, so something else needed to be done as well.

I'd also expect a series of negative articles in the coming days from the press controlled by Activision.

Are you saying that this was done by competitors?  That they would risk the backlash if they ever got caught doing this?  They'd be ruined.

How far do you reckon people are willing to go when billions are on the line?

Mega corporations have been doing far worse for profit than the relatively innocuous loss of access to a game for a couple hours.

I have not given the thought of competitor's doing it for gaming but i have considered Malware firms throwing out viruses to help sell anti virus software.

I have not been following FFXIV to understand the Why or possibilities to why.It takes a fair bit of effort and a lot of risk if caught "jail time"so it is always an oddity to hear of DDOS attacks.

Most by now realize there are firms that offer basically a 100% guarantee against DDOS attacks so not sure why SE is not using such a firm or if this is somehow connected to an inside job or connected to firms that often maintain gaming servers for developers.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
