This genera of MMO is pretty much dead, what the hell happened?
For the most part the only ones I've found worth somewhat playing are:

SWTOR (feels like bizzaro Star Wars)
STO (need to be a Star Trek fan and a whale to really be into it)
EVE Online (almost as much fun as a playable screensaver)

Anyone have any good news or know of anything I haven't heard of?

It feels to me the the publishers are not keen to get into sci-fi mmos - maybe due to the complexity that normally needs to involve in them.

Fantasy or post-apocalyptic settings are more popular because they can have areas that has nothing special and can just use default graphic assets.

you will have to wait for Star Citizen buddy and nobody is really sure what is going on there.

    Tabula Rasa
    Auto Assault
    SWG
    Anarchy Online
Stargate Worlds (okay it never released but it was actually really good in beta. But did kinda feel WoW-like)

Sadly sci-fi games mostly are space based, personally not interested in a space game. Space is a ton easier to make, ton less art and effort needed which means its vastly cheaper to make. Plus you don't need to create unique alien models (not just that which is living, but buildings and everything) and all that jazz that one sees in a sci-fi movie/show.

From what I've seen there are no aliens in Star Citizen or anything cool or epic, just boring bland humans with boring bland human structures that I can find in every game ever. Nothing even humanoid but not human like mass effect, with tons of lore in each species and tons of universe lore of all these cool aliens and civilizations. Nothing cool at all, just bland humans.

Tabula Rasa proved you can have good AI in an MMO.

Auto Assault is still the only vehicle MMO ever made that is PvE, with an environment highly interactable (which is super rare to find even in singleplayer games)

SWG was an amazing PvE MMO and the only good star wars MMO made (so far), though it was great for PvP too for those that liked that proving you can have both without it being forced upon someone.

Nothing like anarchy online exists or even being developed

And where is stargate MMO :( Heck I'll take an epic witcher 3/cyberpunk 2077 massive stargate singleplayer/co-op game at this point
The entire point of his post, which went way over your head was: Worth playing now. SWG was great and I hear the EMU's are good as well.

No mans Sky might be worth a look, I really enjoyed that game. Other than that, what has already been mentioned...I can't really think of anything else...maybe defiance? That is Sci-fi but also a bit post-apocalyptic. Sorry, I can't be more help.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

This probably pushes some buttons, though fails at others:  https://store.steampowered.com/app/454120/Starbase/

Though to be honest I think modern media is too sensitive for any type of serious scifi to happen any more, at least outside of books.   A big part of the genre is exploring socio political concepts, even if you don't agree with them.   Just look at the new cyberpunk game as an example, and MMO dev doesn't want to take that type of social media risk to their riskier than normal game development project.

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that one day, there will be a Traveller MMO, but, chances of that happening are pretty much zero! :/

This is a law of MMOs that is not often talked about, nothing other than fantasy is allowed. If you are making a SF or Horror MMO, or any other genre than fantasy it is risky. And we know how they feel about risk.

Diversity among MMORPGs are to be encouraged.  Myself, I feel I could play medieval fantasy forever.   Looking at endless space I just find boring.

Vendetta Online and Elite Dangerous are two which immediately come to mind.

EVE (almost as fun as a playable screensaver) xD.
The reality about EVE is that is very complex and entertaining the first ten years. Later, it decays...

I would be over the moon if a Farscape MMORPG materialised. I was actually pretty upset the Stargate one got cancelled.

Good call, I'd also like to see a MMORPG based on the Dr Who universe, but would need to have playable alien races, especially my favorite,  the Darlocks..

If anyone has read After Atlas by Emma Newman, you might, like me actually really be quite scared of the future. I mean it is scifi but it has such a morbid outlook of what the future has for us that had me having nightmares while awake. One part of the book almost brought me to sincere terror at that happening to me.

In that book games you play actually has NPCs trying to get you to buy a product before they continue a quest. This is not the terrible part of the book though. I wouldn't want to be immersed in the world Emma Newman has created. It's more horror than scifi. Horror Scifi.

Fantasy is also a lot easier to make stuff up for... fast travel -> magic; special effects -> magic; cool abilities -> magic; powerful enemies -> magic; excuse for anything -> magic

And yes Sci-Fi has 'advanced technology', but it pales in comparison to established fantasy... i.e. even Star Wars is just fantasy in space.

Vendetta Online - seriously, this under-appreciated gem is worth playing: if not for the story, then for the insanely high player-skill-cap in combat.  It follows Netwonian physics; it's possible to develop a kind of intuitive martial "flow".

Yeah, that's it, haven't seen the show in a while, blended their name with Murlocs or something, hey it was early in the day.

    Back to exterminating.

Here's a conversation I had with a friend and his wife as we discussed playing Path of Exile or something else instead.

She had not played MMORPGs in well over ten years or more, so she asked me what I'd been enjoying over the years.

I told her I played EVE Online over 10 years so she asked why weren't we playing that instead?

I said women usually aren't very keen on EVE for several reasons, and went to list the theoretical reasons why getting no further than my first statement, "EVE is a sci-fi game" at which she immediately stopped me saying "nevermind,  I wouldn't like it."

There just aren't as many fans of sci-fi (especially hard sci-fi) as there is for fantasy hence it's under represented.

Most of my female friends do not like Science Fiction. They are all pretty old though so may be this isn't true of  younger women
