Regarding the Epic/Steam "debate," are you millennials (j/k) trying to destroy another word?
Steam doesn't even make games anymore, everything they sell they have to source from someone else. They don't having control over the distribution of those things, and if you didn't want to buy them from Steam, you could: buy them directly from the maker, buy them at brick and mortar, buy them at GoG or some other digital store. Steam is DECIDEDLY not a monopoly. They are just very successful.
Ironically (only based on the arguments made here) Epic is the one engaging in monopolistic behavior, because they are making deals that make it so you can't buy it anywhere except for Epic. They have a huge price advantage, so why are they trying to monopolize games? Can't provide the level of service Steam can? Of course, because they take less of a cut, they can't provide the same service.
To continue the Princess Bride quotes, "I don't think that word means what you think it means."
I am extremely excited for this game. The only question is which store I will support - the epic store or windows store. I'm not sure which is more effective to help pc gaming in general as well as hurt steam's monopoly.
Im buying mine from where I get most of my games, my local games store, which employs 4 people.
Where do you live? None of the game stores I live near sell PC games, or only have a small rack for PC games (usually only the shit, AAA ones that are also console games) and sell almost exclusively console games. Target and Walmart sell a decent amount of PC games, but their selection is poor. I would rather support a main PC distributor, and they are pretty much online only.
My main issue with the windows store - MS hasn't been good to PC players since the Xbox. Every now and then they make some noise about changing this but then they don't. I don't really trust them. If they put even 10% of the effort they put into the Xbox into PC gaming - PC gaming would be in a much better place now.
For Epic and people thinking they have "bad" business practices - its silly. Prime tried to cut in on Netflix by offering original content exlcusive on their platform. And Sony and Hulu did the same. Disney is doing the same. So is YouTube premium. So is the CBS all access pass. Its not bad business practice to make exclusive contracts to draw people to join your platform. It just isn't. It is the only effective way of making your platform a draw.
still not sold on this. their best argument seems to be "from the original makers of fallout!"
fyi, fallout had REAL success starting with part 3 ^^
first 2 parts are basically only referenced for bragging reasons among players ("ERRR PLERD FELLERT ONE...ERRR!")
and we all know who did FO3.
The big upside to this title for me is I'm a huge fan of Tim Cain's previous work. On the other hand Pillars of Eternity is one of the most overrated RPGs of its type in my opinion. They reused faction rating system from Fallout: New Vegas only it feels cruder and less detailed than the previous version. There is a ton more about the game that feels low effort especially the last third where they obviously didn't expect most people to reach and finish. So, if the game is anything like Pillars then it's only worth it on a game pass.
This is one I'm definitely waiting to see what the Patient Gamers have to say a little ways down the road. For me, that's where the real feedback is found.
Tim Cain had almost nothing to do with PoE. He designed the stronghold upgrade system. If you look bad through the Tim Cain catalogue where he was lead developer (besides Bloodlines where it was Leonard, but is still a good example since Leonard is the other lead for this) none of them turned generic for the last 3rd. Its always quality rpg material all the way through.
That isn't to say there isn't valid criticisms of FO 1/2 or the Troika catalogue. In my opinion the only game to have objectively great combat was ToEE. Their games aren't about graphics or combat. Their games are 100% unique in being great rpgs first, last, and always. No pre-designed protagonist with a story you have dictated to you. You make a character and they try to provide the essence of pnp - you create your own story. They give you extreme tools to try and play it as crazy and as accurately as the unique character you created.
Others have tried to emulate what Tim does - but no one can do it. FO 1/2, Acranum, ToEE, and Bloodlines still have rabid fanbases creating content for them. No one can make games that capture the imagination like Tim, especially when he has Leonard by his side. The only tragedy is that Jason Anderson isn't with them.

I have an EB Games store around 30 mins away, and while youre correct in that they dont carry a big range of PC games anymore, they do get most of the new ones in, and often with exclusive deals not available online, and most of the time, cheaper.
Tim was the executive producer and lead programmer at Obsidian and PoE. [source]. He was also at Carbine studios under NCSoft. I'm not here to trash talk Tim. I have a ton of respect for his work. In
fairness he didn't make those original games great on his own either.
It's a team effort and his new teams don't measure up to his old teams.
If they were so very confident about the quality of Outer Worlds they wouldn't have signed the exclusivity deal for a guaranteed payout. That is the Bat Signal to wait on any game.
I don't know exactly an executive producer does on games (or movies). I saw the movie the Procuders, and in the GLOW series the rich young guy was a producer. People calling the shots seem to have director in the title, like Tim had for FO 1/2, Arcanum, and ToEE.
I'm not a huge Obsidian fan, and I 100% sided with whats-his-name, the writer guy who was director of PS:T and NWN2:MOTB. I clearly remember reading an interview where Tim stated he didn't have much input on PoE other than designing the castle upgrades, within set limits.
You can disagree with me and that's fine. Your idea of waiting for reviews is perfectly valid. If anything, being an Obsidian game makes me a little more leery of this game than Troika's famed buggy initial releases. But I fall in the camp that thinks all Tim Cain's products are day one purchases. I'm an unapologetic fanboy of his and my reasons for this is I love FO1/2 and all three Troika games. I think those games earned my trust forever. And even though he was a small cog in Wildstar I still loved that game too. I also enjoued and put a ton of hours into both PoE 1 and 2.
Very excited for this game. I hope expectations aren't raised to the point where they are unattainable. Obsidian has stated previously The Outer Worlds won't look to have the same gameplay hours as say a previous Fallout game. I really like the majority of what the studio has done in the past and they seem to have the right team in place to deliver something new and fun.
I recently updated my Gamepass on my XBox to "ultimate" for a few dollars more a month and will be getting this on X-Box and PC as part of my subscription which I think is great. This isn't a commercial for Gamepass but I like that I can choose my platform based on where I want to play.
In my past, I was a console-never, dedicated PC Gamer and still prefer my PC for strategy titles, some RPGs but have migrated to the X-Box for most action/shooters. As I have gotten older, I find I sometimes prefer my couch and TV to sitting in my gaming chair in front of my big widescreen monitor.
I also find, again with age using a mouse for a long period of time hurts my wrist after spending most of my workday using a mouse. I played around with different wrist supports, a brace for my elbow that attached to my desk etc. (to take pressure off the wrist) but finally settled on I using a trackball now (Logitech's latest) which is fine in most situations but for shooters I now prefer the controller vs. the trackball not being able to use a mouse for hours on end.

should I mention thanks for all this exclusives deals on disney netflix and so on and on, made piracy usage raise again? there is no way people will sign more then one or 2 streaming, and most of time is one show only they want to see, so download from internet it is, hell they are uploading these on porno sites since they tend to no take down such videos.
so again why is not a bad practice, if people are avoiding it?

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Playing ESO on my X-Box
Which I guess during the whole Steam v Epic PC Civil War, makes me Chaotic Neutral.
