Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, Saga Of lucimia, and Ship of heroes. Those are the only three that I even have a sliver of excitement for.
I have had a quick look at these... Pantheon, I get. I have been keeping a loose eye on it even if I haven't been art of the mmorpg scene. But the other two? What's the draw? I won't shit on them, but I don't see a lot to get pumped up about. Why play SoH over the ((other)) CoH servers? Not trolling, just looking for info.
Is anyone willing to give me a brief rundown of the new or near upcoming games on offer to help me start to look?
I am in the same boat here.
The three games I am interested in but not following any updates are Patheon Camelot Unchained Damn the third I can't even remember the name of it anymore. Getting old.
the next big MMO is one that came out in 04. thats how sad the MMO scene is these days.
This. I've been waiting over a decade and the reality is the MMORPG scene is dead and it's not coming back any time soon. I think in the US we have lost the ability to actually create a new quality MMORPGs, what's coming out now is so far away from where it needs to be it's honestly disgusting.
It's going to take time for the new generation of developers to hit the workforce before we start to see anything interesting.. maybe Gen Z or whatever may come after that.

That is brought up a lot on these servers. Why SoH over CoH now a days. The answer is simple for me. You don't have to worry about NcSoft pulling the plug for some reason, the game is updated for modern times (Even though it may not look like it), and new content. If the game launches and is a success then new content will be churned out. CoH is done and over with. Any new content that would come out would be fan fic anyway. Plus hopefully a bigger playerbase. CoH is doing pretty well for a EMU of course but it doesn't have the playerbase of most MMO's out their. Plus some people just don't want to play a game that your technically stealing.
SoL is striving to be a lot like Pantheon is a lot of ways but the dev team seems to be more focused. They are comprised of just average joes who are working on a game because they love the MMO scene and hate the way its been going. Its clear that they are passionate and they are getting by using most of their own money and investors. Closing down their cash shop a few months ago and going dark. Only people who will get info now a days are people signed up for the newsletter and people who bought a backer pack. Also SoL is going to have a massive story and be a lot like D&D which has me excited because I love stories in video games. Taking old school sensibilities and mixing it with a story that will be told over the course of 7 years is an amazing prospect. However they have talked about how they will sunset the MMO after their story is told which is the only negative I have at the moment.
I wouldn't consider the prospect of a game much substitute for an actual one. At least one can actually play CoH. More relevant alternatives are CO for something mechanically similar and DCUO for something thematically similar.
CoH actually has the potential for unlimited content albeit amateur, by virtue of the in game system that allows players to make missions for others to enjoy (which is also quite useful for RP groups to create their own playable stories.)
The spectre of NCSoft closing it down obviously exists, but appears less threatening the longer it remains operating publicly without that repercussion. Regardless, even if that happens, they can't shut down my enjoyment of once again being able to enjoy a superlative MMORPG (in my view) for however long it lasts.
If official servers were still available I wouldn't consider anything else. If they were to be made available again, I would return to them immediately. But I am not graced with those options so choose to make do with what I am.
If one of the spiritual successors does come to fruition, I will then reconsider my options. My support, small as it is, went to City of Titans. Ship of Heroes has since appeared more interesting to me lately, but my support well for games not yet available is a bit dry these days.

Honestly if we were going to see anything interesting it would be now. The people make videogames now played EQ 1 &2, Vanguard, old school WoW, etc...
If Gen Z or whatever decide to make MMO's later its going to be even worse because they will be used to the F2P games of today.
I suspect games of the future will be the same as they have in the past. Aesthetics will vastly improve over time. Everything else will remain largely the same.
Whether f2p sensibilities will remain a factor is hard to say, but I expect they will. It is always possible an impromptu, massive rejection by gamers could bring them down. Unlikely, but history shows such can even topple governments on rare occasion.

If you don't mind playing MMORPG that are more coexistent experience vs. more cooperative one. Most of the genre is solo hero journey savior of the world type thing.
OP, I think you'd be better off going back into stasis. Unless you're an MMORPG nostalgia buff (Pantheon is the last hope there) it's not looking too hot.
Off topic, I think the MMORPG realm will be "revitalized" accidentally by another genre trying to expand it's features.
Persistent worlds, with many large(er) groups sharing narrative seems like it's a natural progression for multi-player. Writers just haven't been able to pry themselves away from the "chosen one" storytelling and the boilerplate "party of 4" thing that gets shoehorned in to that.

Well, my main is old school EQ, but I have enjoyed others, such as Guild Wars 1, a lot. I am playing Conan Exiles right now... Maybe that's the best I can expect for the immediate future.
If you can put up with 90's graphics there are a couple of decent MMOs on Steam but I can't remember all names hopefully someone will step up, they have been mentioned a couple of times before, Project Gorgon was one.

This is an absolute FACT. If you grow up with a controller in your hand playing F2P casino mechanic cash shop driven games, that's what your going to make, because its all you know. And if you grow up with a smart phone in your hand downloading free lollipop games from the play store, then go work for a publisher or marketing dept at some large game company, you also know that's the biggest market.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I did toy with getting back in FFXIV... By all accounts that is rocking it right now. We shall see.
