While World of Warcraft Classic isn't treading any new water with its content, one thing it has brought back are the classic drives to become the first guild to take down a boss on the servers.

No surprise in this. Did not someone post that a raiding guild on one of the private servers was in Classic and preparing for this?

Half, if not more, of the fun when WoW was first released was playing Warcraft in an MMO setting. You have to understand that prior to WoW Warcraft was a base building, resource gathering, strategy game. And a very popular one at that. Now that the MMO has surpassed the stand-alone games in popularity it's just not as fun going back. It lacks the proper context.

It's really not that exciting to see someone kill a raid mob that has been killed hundreds of thousands of times for fifteen years. There are a zillion "how to" posts and videos. It would almost be more interesting if someone tried to kill him and failed.

I guess nobody is going to mention how this guild exploited XP bug for triple the XP gain?

Blizzard fixed it but - that's how many hit 60 already

It was 70% exp in a 10 man raid and original values were 40%. Not triple.

Every guild was using this. Apes still wrecked them.

STOP! Vanilla WOW never had guilds racing to be "world-first." The only thing vanilla raids concerned themselves with was downing content successfully, but no one was trying to make it a realm/server competition. The "world-first" race started around WOTLK. It's a modern mindset applied to a game that never had it. So please STOP retconning what Classic was in 2004.

This is old news like really old and it's not even a proper world first imo. They exploited the exp buff and layering system to get that point. And on top of that it's a private server guild. They were preparing for the classic release for months. It was pretty embarrassing to see them scream with proud on stream after their kills tbh. Like this is 2019. They are by far some of the easiest fights in the game. The hard part was the preparation stage and they skipped that part easily. I just hope people won't turn this game in some kind of stupid race like they did with retail.

They abused the double XP bug in a 10 man party.

I saw tons of people doing it on my server as well, it was super fast leveling. :/

    Agree 100%

Vanilla WoW had no race for world first.

People were still trying to figure out the game lol

Precisely. You can tell who the Vanilla veterans are and who are not. This article is a perfect example of someone trying to pass themselves off as an authority when the reality is they're not. As an actual Vanilla vet who played the game at launch (and before that during open vanilla beta), it drives me nuts.

I was about to start a thread on mmorpg.com, the next day after APES did this, saying how I miss Suzie and her articles about WoW. Now here we are, 3 days later and we get this "News"! :)

    Oh well ..

There were people. Same as there were with DaoC.

I was invited to the first MC raid on our server - the mechanics of which were still fuzzy - because I had one of the very few max level warlocks. Up to that point I had been blissfully unaware how many max levels of any class there had been. Post-invite I had it all: how many of class X, which server had had the first etc. etc. the guild who organised the thing were "keen".

I don't recall the same discussion during the (server first) Onyxia raid I took part in though. Maybe I have forgotten but I don't think so; the group was altogether less "obsessed". Or maybe I just didn't take note - its never been something I track or aim for.

There absolutely were people - or guilds? - to whom it "mattered" (for whatever reason.)

So did players return for the vanilla or just to have a new chance at bragging rights?
I cannot stand anything in game that says LOOK AT ME,i am great.
I said it a very long time ago, players in Wow are NOT there for a rpg experience, they are there to race through like they have to beat something and trying to brag about who got what first, who is first on the leader board.
Blizzard is smart when comes to HOW it entices players,a smart money making operation ,too bad they are not good at making games.Hearthstone being their only really good game. However if you took away Esport and bragging platforms,i am pretty sure Blizzard might go bankrupt.

That may be true today, but OG Blizzard stood atop the mountain alone when it came to quality games.

That said everyone is calling for this guild to be banned or multiple violations of the ToS.

No idea why people get mad for that, and demand everyone stay under level 10 for months now because in 2004 people most played it 5 hours a week and it took several months to get to end game, playing it slowly while reading all the shit lore quests.
