But how long will the opportunity stand? I'm kind of tired of space "exploration" games where you quickly find yourself locked up in a crammed space with thousands other players.

    Thank you for your time!

I don’t think the devs really have one set in stone yet. Compared to most kickstarted MMOs though, there is relatively little drama surrounding Dual Universe and the devs seem to be pretty consistent with communication.

I’m still holding off on supporting it until the beta hits at the very earliest.

Yeah I am pretty much done paying much attention to games that are years away. I'll read an article on em and check out progress, but I'm tired of following games years in advance. Too much time and too many changes.

Someday this game may release and if I can still remember why I wanted to play I may give it a go.

On this website the game page says estimated release 2020. So, um, must be so.

The official Dual Universe roadmap (https://www.dualthegame.com/en/news/2018/08/08/release-roadmap-alpha-launch-announcement/) has launch scheduled for the end of 2020.

NovaQuark have not deviated from the roadmap at all since it was published (which is almost unheard of in indie development, lol)

Sounds good.  So next year, maybe end of Q1 I'll see if they are still on target and hopefully can start getting excited.  I almost did the Kickstarter but pretty gun-shy for MMORPG Kickstarters.

So they are on target for Alpha 3 soon with PvP and ship combat etc...? If so that should be hitting soon and would be interesting to see.

NQ have not missed a deadline yet, but that doesn't mean they don't take it all the way down to the wire, lol

We expect Alpha 3 to start on schedule, i.e. in "the second half of 2019". Having been around since the pre-alpha started, I expect Alpha 3 will start on the last day of December...  ;)

90% of Dual Universe's €20M funding to-date is from private investors, so NovaQuark don't have free rein. If they deviate substantially from their schedule, continued private investment will in all likelihood dry up.

I saw that.  It's good to see that they have mostly funded through private investors.  No need to bleed the fans for every drop of blood they have.

There is way too much up in the air to buy into hype at this point.
So far it just looks like playing an Eve marketplace and Minecraft of which neither of those games interest me at all.

Assets, npc foes/AI,survival eating drinking, crafting, weather, properties of both real players and npc's.Then when making a game like this, each area has to have specific ideas that would allow players to have a reason to explore other than seeing a new auto generated land form.

So taking Minecraft +Eve is not a seller to me.Simple reason, your not enticing Eve players to jump in and Minecraft players, well if they are still interested in Minecraft they are likely never budging.I still see lods of people playing Minecraft and there is so much better out there so yeah this game is catering to a a VERY small market.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

This looks more probable than that Star Citizen imo.

This is a do-it-yourself Star Citizen where every spaceship and building is built by players.
They did their kickstarter mainly to show their investors that there is interest in this game and that potential players want a game like this and would support it.
Recently they got a second round of investments and opened a second studio in Montreal and hired 30+ new people to work on Dual Universe as well.
There may be some delays, but in general they are well on track and their MMO-space-voxel world already works as You can see in the videos. I'm looking forward to every new alpha-session...
This game is for people who like to craft and to create and to build and who want a Space-Engineers-like Sandbox-MMO.

From the start, Dual Universe struck me as incredibly ambitious and almost certainly either vaporware or will have most of what they promised stripped out before launch. I hope they prove me wrong.

There is bound to be some deviation with something as complicated as this.  Anyone who prognosticates it is stating the obvious (Gets no credit in future threads for 'calling it'.

How much of a deviation is the real question.  If they can call this, then they deserve full credit and can shout 'I told you so'

Besides the company's track record so far, I think what the naysayers are missing is the potential in the freedom players will have. Crafting will be a valuable ability, but there will be things to do using what other people have crafted, challenges that other players have set up.

Pretty much all MMORPGs are slight variations on: Go over there, find some X and kill them. Maybe your a healer? So you go with someone else and heal them while they kill the things. Crafting? You get stuff by killing things and follow a preset, provided recipe. Everybody else can do it and mostly they do.

With this game, there could be a lot of different things to do, they will be very different from each other, and other players will appreciate you for doing them.

The one thing I would really like to see that they don't seem to have touched yet is finding a way to populate some of the worlds with animals suited to the environments. I think they would have to procedurally generate variations on forms based on gravity, land/water/air... and a probability that they would appear in the vicinity of a player, sort of like visual clipping.

Then it would be like Eve, Minecraft, AND No Man's Sky.

My biggest concern with DU is how many players the game design will attract... and also manage to hold.

DU is probably one of the "purest" sandboxes ever made, but ironically, that will probably end up counting against it rather than for it in the end.

There are no NPC's in this world, in fact there is no traditional PVE content at all planned for launch. Most of the game world runs on FFA-PVP rules, with total loss of inventory when you die.

It also requires a monthly subscription...

This game will be amazing but not for everyone. It will be a niche space sandbox that appeals to patient, educated, relaxing, mature crowd. Quite the opposite of what gaming is today. I cannot wait for the release. Yet I fear for the profitability of this game in today's world. I'm afraid it will take the route of Project Wish... Fingers crossed.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.
