Most of the game world runs on FFA-PVP rules, with total loss of inventory when you die.
Yeah, considering how many MMORPGs which have tried this model and underachieved or outright failed it astounds me that these folks think it's a good design for their game.
Did they not even look at EVE before getting started? Certainly will appeal to a very small niche, if not dead right out of the gate, where did they find investors for this bad idea?
Oh I know, here's the pitch, "look how successful Fortnight and LOL are...we can't miss."

They pretty much have a working game in Alpha-stage already and all features they announced for Alpha 2 indeed are in Alpha 2 now and can be playtested right now. Which is shown in the latest videos.
This project is progressing well and is on track, they even recently opened an additional studio and hired more people to work on it.

It's up to the players what they want to risk losing, they can buy/build storage containers and put them wherever they want whether it be safe zone or otherwise. As long as the risk/reward is well balanced then it's fine, but without risk/reward there is no game.

If there are "safer" zones a la EVE (which is not a wide open FFA game) then there is still hope, but I haven't read much about the proposed PVP mechanics.

Thanks for the link, hopefully STUs are available to folks after the game launched and not just for those who preorder.
From what I read there will be planets and moons where players can safely place an STU, but will have low value or no resources.
Still seems at this point like it's far too wide open, and unfortunately the link to the Rights and Duties Management System (RDMS) dev blog doesn't work due to a migration from Word Press to their web site.
I noted their description of a Force Field Unit / Protection Bubble timer mechanic is quite similar to EVE's current system, so I guess they have been studying what CCP has implemented in their title.
Guess we'll have to wait and see how it all finally pans out but at least we know the devs well understand if there are no safe(r) areas they risk losing a certain segment of the market (builder/crafters) which they'd rather appeal to if possible.
