AoW: Planetfall -- Steam Release
For anyone waiting on this game, Steam just broadcast that Age of Wonders: Planetfall has released today (Aug 6). The list price through Steam is $49.99 USD. I will be waiting for at least a 30% off sale, with 45+% being preferred. So, it will probably be close to a year before I get this one. That should give the development team a chance to iron out any bugs and rough edges the game may have.

Hey, I am quite new to the game, all I finished is the 2 vanguard missions (using only troopers) and the first amazon one (using lancers). For me it seems that playing with ranged units is a lot easier, even with lancers like 50% of the time I used their ranged attack.
Using melee units seems so cluncky. Sure melee attacks deal like 30% more base damage, but still you have to get in range first, that means that the first time you will be attacking only once, even when you got there you can be staggered, if you need to move that again means only 1 attack. Also only like 2-3 units can focus the same target (with probably only 1 attack).
