It’s been almost three years since Star Wars: The Old Republic got a new expansion. While I’m the sort of player who only returns to SWTOR for new story content, I’ve still been eagerly awaiting the game’s next big story drop. Despite some misgivings, I really enjoyed Knights of the Fallen Empire and Knights of the Eternal Throne and I’ve been craving more. Now that Onslaught is finally out, is it everything I’d hoped for?

3 years to make 3 hours of story content per side?

I heard they made all content harder to solo play now. Does this go for your class stories too?

They did 3 changes which affected "difficulty" (it's more time-to-kill increase than really making stuff harder):
    • reduced planet level sync cap to those the of highest mobs on them in vanilla SWTOR. For example, Tython was capped at level 12, now it's 10.
    • companion had some cooldown changes, AI tweaks and some skills were replaced which resulted in companions being nerfed from God Mode.
    • they apparently tweaked the level sync buff/debuff, but it's hard to validate because of the level sync cap changes.

The game is still "easier" than it was in 3.0 which had class stories soloable, but it now take more time to kill stuff than it did in 4.0 and 5.0 (some stuff that was soloed despite being group content are now back to be group content though) and you'll have to learn to use those defensive cooldowns again.

Calling this an expansion is laughable at best, 2 new planets sound much right?, not really each planet have one story arc, one generic quest.
There is one new flashpoint and one new Operation, that's the "content" rest are just changes and increased level cap and some gear tuning.

I suggest Bioware look at ESO so they understand what an expansion should be.
Hell I would call this a lite DLC.

My 14 year old son came in behind me the other day and watched me play for a bit.  After about 15 minutes and before exiting the room he asks "When will someone besides EA make a Star Wars MMO?"

I beat the content I wanted to beat and promptly unsubbed, yet again, because the game is utterly boring beyond the story bits.

The only time this game is worth it is during double exp events when you can just play story and skip the MMO crap.

You dont need double exp for this expansion, they practically hand you 5 levels... I was not impressed with how short and how fast the leveling was. :(

the motivations to play beyond the story are...very weak tbh.
You don't want to play dress-up and explore your sexuality with your companions?

I'm disappointed that this expansion is so short. While the story scope isn't... galaxy-changing... like KOTFE/KOTET was (and, for me, that's a good thing), it is a big enough story that it deserved more time taken to tell it. Also, while I appreciated that the new content was "more challenging," I was surprised at how quick the leveling was. I was 74 before even leaving Onderon. I do have legacy boosts and ran an XP consumable as well, so there's that, but I only even used the consumable because I assumed a LOT more XP would be required to level up. I think the quick leveling is just indicative of Bioware realizing how short the expansion is. Just the nature of that beast, I guess. All that said about how short it is, I was very pleased with seeing old characters returning, and getting the focus back on what Star Wars really should be IMNSHO, especially in that era: A story about the Empire and Republic. The Eternal Empire stuff was interesting, especially from the perspective of someone who prefers to play Force Users, but it really jumped the shark. And did so repeatedly. I think, overall, it hurt the fandom of the game, and it's a long road back from there. I do think Onslaught is on that path, however. If we don't have to wait too terribly long for more story content (it would be great if they could add 3/6 hours of content every quarter), then these first steps could be the start of something really good for SWTOR. Getting a new FP -and- OP was a good sign, along with the story returning to its roots, and the QoL/System changes are all improvements to my eyes (at least so far). I'm certainly interested in the game again. How long that lasts will be completely dependent on when we get more new stuff, as just changing the grind from Command XP to Reknown is NOT going to hold anyone's interest who wasn't already still playing. Let's hope we see a new roadmap soon, with more new stuff. And that we get that new stuff more often. (Disclaimer: I ain't holdin' my breath... but I can feel hopeful right now :P)
