No argument, loved it. My only complaint was that it was too short. 23 hours played, did every single thing in the game, and now it's done and gone. No replayability, no mod support, no DLC's announced, it's just done. It's everything a Fallout game should be...except long-lived :P
I noted the review mentioned 40 hours played, 23 hours is a rounding error in terms of games I enjoy.
I played FO4 over 1200 hours without ever trying a mod.
Even FONV gave me about 175 hours as unlike many, I enjoyed FO4 much more.
Not to be a dick but their is no way that they did everything offered in only 23 hours. I'm 13 hours in and just left the Groundbreaker after going straight there from Edgewater. Didn't finish the bounty quests there (Edgewater) but did everything else there I think. Did all the quests on Groundbreaker (again I think) but the ones requiring you to go off-ship. I read everything and talk to everyone so YMMV but I feel 40 hours for a non-speedrun playthrough is about right.
EDIT: Oh and about replayability. I rarely replay games I finished but this game might make me do so. If you go anti-corporate (which I am) in one playthrough going the opposite will make the game totally different. Or playing as a sweet-talker minimizing combat one playthrough then just going full brute bash-em-in-the-head in the next will make a difference too.
Just saying...

I'll wait till Steam on this one, but only because I have a backlog of games I'm still working through.
Me too but mostly because Pillars of Eternity was similarly lauded and is greatly overrated in my opinion. I do have a big backlog too I'm working through.
I think it actually bodes well for this game that it is much shorter. That's a pretty good indicator, with the current feedback, that the game is focused and doesn't ramble. I'd much rather have a game leave me pining for more than a tedious nauseating slog to the finish.

Peoples definition of “everything” is much different when it comes to playing games, no doubt. My friend will rush to finish everything while I tidy up the starting area.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
I have been loving this game. I have been trying to full clear each planet, read every terminal/tablet, and talk with everyone that has a name (More often than not the NPC's have names).
Gun play isn't perfect, but its good enough, the game really shines as a beacon of hope in the sea of mediocrity that is the gaming industry right now. I hope they continue to expand on this universe.
Interesting. My main game is GW2 right now but I like to play other games so it's not gw2 all day, everyday so to speak and the last fps game I played was Destiny 2 f2p campaigns and quite enjoyed the combat in there, it was nice and smooth.
Now that I am done with the Destiny 2 campaigns I have moved on to MEA since I hadn't gotten around to playing it fully yet but find the combat kind of meh after Destiny 2 as it just doesn't seem very smooth.... though I am kind of getting used to it.
I also periodically play Warframe, with my boy, though kind of burned out on it so giving it an extended break.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Oof!
Going from Destiny 2 to MEA is NOT going to reflect well on the latter.
I tried so hard to get into MEA but just couldn't do it. Only ME game I never finished. Hope you find it a better game than I did.

Played one evening and only scratched the surface, but so far so good! When I heard it was more HUB based than open world I was kinda worried, but I haven't encountered any corridors or anything of the likes (yet).
Can anyone who is currently playing the game tell me whether the FOV can be adjusted to 120? Is there head bobbing and can it be turned off?
FOV is horizontal FOV (not vertical like most games) and goes till 120. You can adjust beyond this. Click the PC Port Impressions article I linked above because I show you how to adjust this. Also no head bobbing when walking or sprinting.
The storytelling can't compensate by how flat the combat feels. I just smash companions abilities and things dies.
Some people told me near the end it gets harder... But I think people nowadays don't get what hard means anymore. I want something that challenges me to use my tools better - not pumping numbers and calling it harder.
It's great Obisidian is receiving atention, I just wish the atention was more about themselves and less an excuse to throw shit at Bethesda.
Because in the end of the day... This game bores me. And I wonder if there is something I'm missing when I read words like "brilliant" on reviews or one of the latest Jim Sterling's video in which he claims Obisidian can substitute Bethesda Softworks in the podium of "first person RPGs"... Because the only thing this game did was making me want to play Skyrim or FO4.
I agree and more. The game feels a bit empty and small. Almost like it's a indie knock off of FO4 and trying to be Skyrim. And it makes me want to go back to those to get the full open world, in depth story. I'm having a hard time getting into the story. The corps seem too much like a reskin of each other which makes the game seem more shallow. Combat has been really easy except a few bugged encounters which isn't that big of a deal. AI seems VERY dull and flat. I'm also finding I have to remidn myself I'm in a distant space system since I just load screen from one planet to another, It gets easy to forget you are actually traveling the full system. I also find the inventory system rather half baked.
The companions are nice though, I'll give them that.
I'm def having fun, but I'm glad I didn't shell out $60 bucks for it and that it came with Game Pass which I already have for like 3 years.
If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

Maybe they aren't approaching these games from a "I want challenges" viewpoint when they say "brilliant."
Maybe for them the story telling the the character's place in the story, and their decisions, is what they are looking for.
Look at Vampire: the masquerade. Not really a great combat game from what I can tell but it seems to have a huge fanbase.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
While I do love this game, people need to stop comparing it to Fallout. It's nothing like Fallout. It's more like Mass Effect or KOTOR than anything. The only similarity with Fallout is the combat. People just want an excuse to drag Fallout 76 through the dirt again.
You do know that Obsidian is the same studio that did Fallout New Vegas, the FO game considered by many to be the best of the bunch... don't you?
A FO comparison is legit and unavoidable.

"The Outer Worlds is utterly brilliant and is exactly what we need right now. I’m here to tell you why." and
"First off, the writing is just phenomenal."
NO. JUST NO! The game is not objectively brilliant, nor do we need it right now. That later bit sounds like propaganda btw. You "need" this entertainment. No you don't. Why even try to make such a claim? Its absurd.
The writing is phenomenal? No. Its actually quite bad. The dialogue between Pavarti and Junlei is just one example of incredibly horrible writing, with it quickly leading into a lesbianic relationship between the two. Not only is it awkward, but it comes across as completely artificial and unnatural. No one talks like that, ever! Its like in Mass Effect Andromeda (which this website praised as well) where some random NPC has to tell you their whole backstory and how they used to be a man. Its literal cringe is what it is.
Remember the original writer for this project was apparently fired, and replaced by someone else with a whole lot less talent. I think you people are really lowering the bar if you are pushing this, assuming this article is not promotional (at the behest of Microsoft), which it probably actually is.
I also can't help but think maybe some bias might be getting in the way. The first companion you get is clearly Indian. The author of this game worship piece is as well. Maybe they are just happy to see this in a game, and that bias is getting in the way of objectively analyzing the quality of the game itself.
The game does not hide how poorly designed and written it is. More obvious is the over use of masculine females in almost every leadership role in the game, and the few times you do find a male in charge you either dispose of them (because they are written as a bad person), or you find a way to replace them, with again a masculine empowered female. This is not a problem on its own, but its at such a frequency in the game that it becomes unnatural and shows a clear kind of identity politics driving the design.
The only decent praise one can give the game, the objective parts, is that the environment art assets are fairly well done (thought the out door world level design is not), the sound design is good, and some of the game's challenge mechanics are solid, simple but solid. Unfortunately the poor level design and balancing makes this game way too easy, which probably hits that trend where game journalist and some female players were complaining games are too hard. In fact, the game literally puts in a difficulty mode called Story, so you don't have to actually worry about combat. This defeats the purpose of game design, which is all about challenge mechanics.
The very foundation of this game is bad, it is designed with a different target audience in mind, and it shows. I cannot ever recommend this game. Harsh? Yes, but also accurate.

wow, you're a friggin' joy. And "masculine females?" Maybe that's just what happens when you don't have simpering 1950's stereotypes who "need a man."
Accurate? Maybe it's just your bias showing.

Your first comment, makes the one that follows it quite ironic. Maybe its just your bias showing? That goes both ways. What I offered was mostly (key word) an observation based on the content of the product itself.
The funny thing about your "need a man" comment (which shows bias), is that apparent none of the women in the game need one. Makes you wonder how they will survive without re-population to offset the clearly high fatality rate taking place.
But in all seriousness, masculine, dare I say, ultra lesbianic, women are not a problem on their own. Its when nearly every single one of them is designed that way, it becomes a stereotype, a trope, and it actually removes variety from the characters you encounter in the game.
The first squad leader you find in the game is a masculine female with no sense of humor, just bland and dryly written. You go to town to find the constable, same exact cookie cutter female character. Go to the leader of the deserters. Same thing. Fly to the Ground breaker, meet the constable there, same exact masculine female in charge. Ok, go to meet the black market leader who drives the story forward, same exact thing. All dry, humorless, masculine females. What about the scrappers faction, lets go talk to their leader/quest giver. Oops same cookie cutter character. Ok, lets go to see the captain of the Groundbreaker ship, low and behold, same thing.
Part of human intelligence is picking up patterns. In order to be entertained, there needs to be an element of surprise, of unpredictability. Thats what creates the stimulus which triggers the emotional response tied to entertainment. When the patterns become too apparent and predictable, then the entertainment factor drops considerably.
The developers made very little effort in "diversifying" if you will (adding variety) to the characters, the factions, the way the world works. Once you see the 2 or 3 tropes they apply everywhere, everything looks lazy and poorly designed.
This is not opinion, this is observation based on whats actually in the game.
Some games come across as well thought out and hand crafted, with each character designed in a unique way, the level design placed with a clear progression/challenge curve in mind. Some games do not, they are done by amateurs in the craft. That is what Outer Worlds is.
Get away from the novelty of the "western in space" visuals, and that's all you see. I won't apologize or back away from noticing how poorly designed this game is.

Thanks for the read! I and everyone else sincerely appreciate your well thought out, cogent, measured, cohesive response!
Sounds like a fun game, though Im going to have to wait for it go go on deep discount. Can't see being happy spending $60 on what I hear from everyone to be a short game with little replayability.
Exactly. . gamepass has payed off huge for me. I never get to go back to games very often even though I want to. This was going to be a day 1 purchase for me and I didn't have to. . so that pays for about 7 months of game pass alone. I don't really care to own this one. I know it isn't for everyone. I also try games I wouldn't normally - Slay the Spire was great for a few rounds etc. I am not sure how it will work out in the end but so far it has been worth it. If i had an xbox even more so.
As far as the game. . I like it a lot. I think I overplayed. . first planet in one sitting. I will take a break and come back in a day or so. I like that I can pick ridiculous dialogue options and am rewarded with a well thought out response.
Sounds like a fun game, though Im going to have to wait for it go go on deep discount. Can't see being happy spending $60 on what I hear from everyone to be a short game with little replayability.
Not sure I'd agree on lack of replayability. There is a lot of choice in the game, so you could very easily see different dialogue, endings, character choices, etc. depending on how you spec your character. And of course, everyone's playstyle is different. I play very deliberately, so I'm about 21 hours into the game and nowhere near the midpoint. So length is what you make of it. I can say, however, this is one of the best RPGs I've played in years and is absolutely worth your time. If you're waiting for a discount, absolutely nothing wrong with that! However, keep in mind that this game is on Xbox Games Pass PC, which you can get for $5 right now which will give you 1 month. That's honestly not bad.
How many possible endings are there? Do all these so called choices you made make any difference in how the ending turns out?
Haven't reached the ending, but I've just finished one of the planets. One of the key characters didn't trust me enough, locking me out of the ending I wanted for that planet.
It was because of a relatively minor decision, which turned out to have big consequences. Was a major bummer when it happened, but it made me feel like the decisions I make have an impact - beyond just help faction A and not faction B.
Hopefully the final ending treats player choice in a similar fashion.
I get get way more of a Firefly vibe than Fallout personally. Parvati / Kaylee, Vicar / Shepherd. Haven't gotten far enough to see if Jayne or the rest of the gang show up yet.
