An awesome overview/retrospective on FFXI

Just watched this through on YT, and SoberDwarf, its creator, does a great job of covering the game's history, and just what made it such an awesome and memorable experience for so many of us fortunate enough to experience it... the good and the bad, warts and all.

I had a great time when I played this. I wish I would have stuck with the game longer & got pulled into World of Warcraft when it was released. Leaving this game was one of my biggest regrets in life. I miss the older style of MMOs. Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen plans on bring it back, but it would have the aesthetics & lore of Final Fantasy.

It's interesting how this game got so many things right, and I haven't found another game as good.  It wasn't even my first MMO, but it sure as hell held my attention for something like 10 years before abyssea came along.  Once they started to inflate everything and take the WoW approach of making things totally invalid I was no longer interested.  Level 99 is the more traditional FF max level, but going from 75 to 99 in one jump and with all the things that came with it meant that all the old content was totally invalid and just there to be solo'ed through.

I have been playing on Eden private server for the past few months. Loving every minute of the nostalgia. I had gone back to the retail version several times but its so watered down now its unrecognizable. Eden is exactly how I remember it, I just wish I had heard about it sooner so I could have got in earlier.

I would play on eden but the population is always an issue on private servers, but ESPECIALLY in these older games were you absolutely need to be able to find other people to do things.  If you were to play on a FFXIV private server for instance the population isn't quite as key because:

    A) Group finders
    B) Way more solo-able content

The population is actually pretty solid. Only times I have had an issue finding a party is while playing Thief. Other than that, I have had a great time. Find myself in a party pretty much every night.

I am a bit of a night owl, I didn't think I would be able to find parties really late at night. But as it turns out there are A LOT of European players as well, so it worked out.

Its no where near retail release populations, but it is passable.

Oh god thf, I tried to main that back in the day and man that was painful.  One thing FFXI needed to be better about was making some classes a bit more viable.  THF was a one-trick pony with SATA and that's about it lol.  DRG also had a hell of a time finding groups.

I tried to get back into FFXI recently when the set was on sale, but I forgot how difficult it is to figure things out without a person explaining it to you. Back in the day when I first played it I had two friends who were into it, but now trying to go back there are so many odd systems and things you just need to figure out it seems impenetrable without a guide.

Made worse no doubt by all the new things added since then lol.  There was literally zero tutorial to that game.  They drop you into your main city-state and away you go.

This one will pretty much take you through everything from 1 to endgame in the game's curent iteration: https://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Quickstart_1-119_Guide

bg-wiki and ffxiah will be some of your most used references if you're trying to start back up again.

The current dev team said they had something "special" to announce for the game's 20th anniversary which everyone is pretty much speculating that they are going to do ffxi "classic." Even though the game is crazy time intensive (one of the main reason why I never want to play on a private server for the 'classic' feel), I think it would draw a lot of lost people. Game just went down hill for me (and many others I know) after the final abyssea chapter and adoulin's introduction of ilvls pretty much sealed the game's fate.
