Preorder open for Half-Life: Alyx, but it's VR Only

Looks to be a VR only title. Anyone else think this is a big risk Valve is taking by making a HL game VR only? They are pretty much sidelining a majority of gamers who do not own VR, or cannot play VR due to motion sickness issues? I understand they are trying to sell their Index system, but come on. Unless I'm mistaken I did not see it stated anywhere it would allow non-VR play.

From mega excited to rolling my eyes in a span of seconds. VR is trash. The only vr game even close to good is Beatsaber, and it's a very narrow design.

Same here. While I wouldn't call VR trash, it's still very gimmicky. Fun and full of potential, but gimmicky.

A new HL game in VR only is honestly a kick to the groin for a LOT of fans. What the hell are they thinking?

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

It's funny how one person's trash is another's treasure. I don't think it's too hyperbolistic to call VR the final computing platform, and I have very little interest in playing Beat Saber.

Both games in my sig run in VR, for example.

Dreadhalls received accolades from influencers like Markiplier and AngryJoe:

Minecraft, among the best-selling video games of all time, runs in VR and it is glorious.

There are plenty of non-gaming applications for VR as well, like VRchat, Altspace, etc. etc.

Superhot looks great, and Alyx looks great as well.

"The only vr game even close to good" - how many VR games have you played?  Not Distance or Vendetta Online I bet, because they are awesome: like, I've logged hundreds and thousands of hours for them respectively.

So the next question is, who makes the best VR system?

Need more decent games like this to pop on to VR.

Yeah, this def looks interesting in the ways it'll be using VR. I think VR is only beginning to find a solid foundation. They need to raise the experience/comfort level and lower the price more, but I've had awesome experiences with VR, and I haven't even tried porn yet...

Jesus, so much ignorance passed on as knowledge and flat out misinformation.

The best VR set for the money is the Oculus. There are others that claim to be better but they are much more expensive, require higher end computers to run, have less support and aren't built with the same quality (yes, there are people who got bad Oculus units, it happens).

That said, most gaming computers can run an Oculus Rift S. If you happen to not have a computer capable, the Oculus Quest is a standalone headset that can plug into a computer using a USB3 cable for extra power and game options. The Rift S will is better than the Quest overall if you plan to use it with your computer. Both units are $399.

There are a lot of good VR titles that aren't Beatsaber (which is good). Robo Recal, Elite Dangerous, Skyrim, No Mans Sky, Stormland, The Forest, Lone Echo, Arizona Sunshine, Pavlov, Asgards Wrath, GTA V, and yes, Half Life. This is above and beyond awesome puzzle games, horror games, tabletop style games, hack and slash games and experiences.

It's definitely past the "gimmick" stage. 6 million VR headsets already sold in 2019 alone before black friday and Christmas, 4.5 million sold in 2018. That's over 10 million people looking for the next big game. Hardly a gamble.

Oculus out of the question since FB owns that.

Gotta be the dumbest thing I've heard. Coming in a close second "I don't watch Tom Cruise movies because Scientology is a cult".

I'm gonna wait until it comes out on Steam!! Um, wait lol.  Honestly though the only titles I  play that are  in VR are flight sims and racing so I am going to have to pass on this.

Do you just not like standing with the headset on? Don't get me wrong, racing and flying in VR is unparalleled in terms of immersion, but there's a lot of cool shit that doesn't revolve around sitting in a seat.

I'm not opposed to standing to play a game ,but to be honest I've never experienced any titles other than flight and racing sims in VR.  For now they are the only type of games that interest me in the VR format.  I guess I could be more  open minded to something outside of those two genres should something that really stands out catches my interest. Who knows maybe something like Half Life could do it.
