It could be
dogfighting, like Ace Online and Star Conflict
capital ship fighting like Fractured Space, Dreadnought
space trading/exploration like Elite: Dangerous
space strategy/tactics which I currently don't know too much about, maybe Sins of a Solar Empire, but that doesn't have any players AFAIK.

There are many active players in this game. Message me and I'll hook you up with my guild. Which is one of the largest in the game.
It features trading on a dynamic market a la "Taipan!", piracy, manufacturing, and epic space battles including hundreds of fighters and some capital ships.
Jargon-y, I know, but I haven't really found anything else quite like it. It's slow to get into, but there is a pretty generous free trial. There are a *lot* of slow times in the game, generally speaking. 1v1 duels are amazing, and spontaneous furballs are even better.
...that's basically my elevator pitch. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but try it out and see if you like it: doing so won't cost you anything. If you are a PC player (which the game originally debuted on in 2002) make sure to start the game on PC.
It is a 3D game, in case anyone's wondering.
