I think Star Citizen is going to bomb (though I hope not), and that it will be the Heaven's Gate of the crowd funding industry (film, not the cult). Post Star Citizen, I expect to see a lot less major money grabs by "indie" producers. And possibly even legislation and regulation.
I wonder, though. There seems to billions of dollars that people feel they just have to throw at some idea they'd like to see happen. This is all across the crowdfunding spectrum, not just games.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
A lot of the crowdfunding is for small projects. I get tempted looking at KS, but I don't look at them because I don't want to be tempted.
Also, I don't crowdfund stuff. I'm okay waiting X amount of years and then ponying up money later. I don't need a head start or anything.
I also only play 1 game at a time, so the chances I'd even play a game I kickstart would be remote. Plus, who knows where i'll be in 5-10 years. I didn't imagine myself playing SC 2 again. Who knows, 5-10 years from now, I may be into single player RPG's which I can't get into if my life depended on it.
Overall, I wouldn't crowdfund a video game, I'd crowdfund small passion projects looking for small amounts of money from passionate individuals if I were to crowdfund. I'd also do it more as a donation than I actually care about anything in return. But if i'm going to donate money, may as well feed people or give gifts to children.

play mmo? yes. Crowd fund mmo ? No. Why would I want to bear the risk of failure? 80% start up fails and mmo are no different except at crowd fund the risk increases to like 95% because I don't know if the people making it are honest or even competent and if they succeed I get 0% returns. I've always been an investor, but last time I checked 0% returns are not investment. and If I want to waste money, better spend it on a good existing mmos at least I support them to exist.
I backed Star Citizen and I enjoy playing the new Alpha-builds from time to time. I think they are making good progress now.
I backed Dual Universe and I enjoy playtesting the current Alpha.
Will I back future projects? I'm much more cautious now and will decide on a case by case basis. I like innovative indie MMOs from small studios so I will support them if a new MMO project triggers me and already has a working prototpye or something to show already.
I most probably won't back any projects that just have a design document and plan, but no working game prototype already in place.
