Star Citizen and Dual Universe already have playable Alphas out there to test and enjoy.
The roadmap of Dual Universe is quite reasonable in my opinion, they add new features over time and don't promise the moon. They accomplished a lot already and are progressing. Who cares if the release is 2021 or 2022...

Maybe why Elite Dangerous has been furiously working on the QoL updates. DU's timeline does put pressure on some other projects. I'm quite surprised to hear they're progressing so quickly. Let's see if they can keep up the momentum through the early beta slogs.
So quickly? I backed it the initial release was wanted in late 2018, so now we are looking at 2021. I've seen the progress of similar games like Empyrion the base mechanics come online quick enough, Space Engineers was slower indeed but DU is pushing to scale this idea to an MMO scale with an actual economy.
I do not think Elite Dangerous would ever do updates to respond to DU, Elite is a proper space sim, that is not DU's primary gameplay focus.
What EVE should have done (AKA on planet gameplay).
I will keep a close eye on this one, really interesting concept... with a lot of emphasis on the word concept.

Late 2018? Their KS page estimated Dec 2018. That would put them about 2 - 2.5 years late. If all the other crowd-funded MMO kept to that schedule they would all be released right now including Camelot Unchained, Star Citizen, Crowfall, etc. Ashes isn't that far behind yet and I'm not sure about Pantheon so I give them a pass on that for now. All the others dream of only being 2.5 years late.
I'm not a fan of this game at all, but in context they're not doing a bad job of it so far by most any measure.
Back during Kickstarter they estimated 2 years 3 months till release.
Now that 2 years 3 months have passed, their current estimation is still a bit under 2 years till release.
Dual Universe is right there along with other Kickstarters that make progress, but that progress isn't really bringing them any closer to release.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.
