It is sad that eq2 is still one of the best mmos out there.
It actually kinda is.
I do generally play FF14 more often than not, but I drift back to EQ2 every so often. There's something about Norrath that even though you have to head-canon a lot of the lore stuff, or search areas you never really looked at before, the world is consistently enjoyable. Played EQ1 way back in the day, and EQOA as well. Even the Dark Alliance-eqsque Champions of Norrath was pretty fun.
I'd say if anyone wants to at least learn a bit about MMOs, EQ2 is kinda still a good starting point.
Ive tried playing EQ2 at least twice? maybe 3 times over the years and I hate the clunky combat and found the mini map confusing. Maybe I need to give it another go.
On paper it has everything I want. Still f2p with silver and gold patron levels I guess.

In my opinion the original EQ2 (2004-2007) was the best MMORPG. On paper it has everything you want, excellent lore, a mix of instanced and contested dungeons, decent crafting, good character customisation, lots of different classes and collections.
I don’t know why no other MMORPG implemented a Collection system. It gives you a reason to explore and valued items to sell on the AH.

Rift had their artifact collection stuff. Other games did as well, even if on a scaled down meh kind of level, like SWTOR and their holocrons
Others like DCUO have more cosmetic collections, like their super suit skins. They took it a little further with having those collections reward feat points (or w/e they called them), which you use to get stronger

It’s a shame they turned it into a WOW clone.
OMG, this is absolutley and utterly WRONG! EQ2 is not even fucking close to a WOW clone get your shit together and quit saying this.

Stop living in a bubble and get back to reality. I beta tested EQ2 and it’s the game I played more intensely until 2008. I know the game pretty well.

The map really kills the game for a lot of people. Even Wow at one point updated their map and quest tracker to make it easier.

True, after all they were both produced by Scott Hartsman.
SWTOR holocrons could not be sold to the AH if I remember correctly.

Well as far as Wow clones goes it is imo the BEST,far better than Wow.However for a deep overall game design it is FFXI but FFXIV is a good choice for those that look for a FFXI Wowish combo. Problem for me is i am not looking for any kind of WOWish affect,i prefer an Atlas/FFXI combo which NONE exist so some developr should WAKE UP.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
WHAT THE HELL IS THE OVERSEER FEATURE???? This seems to be a huge expansion and they have done nothing to explain any of the features. It is very strange, to roll out new systems without saying anything about them.

Then came back for a quick look when main stat + stam was a thing.
Then it went f2p and I don't know what happened with it since.
