I've played all of them. Some of them had a much greater impact on me personally than others. I imagine it would be the same for others who have played these games or some of them.
"This last decade has been incredible for me personally. I graduated college at the height of the recession, got a job at the height of the recession, bought a new car at 25, and just last year, bought a house at 30."
Not sure why this is included. Grats?
The game list is pretty good though.
Except it's interesting there is no mention of Fortnite or Overwatch. Even if you think those games suck, the topic is "impactful", not "impactful in a positive way." It's hard to deny their impact on gaming since every other game these days is a MOBA and/or a Battle Royale.
But maybe you mean impactful on you personally. /shrug
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
I've never played any of them. I had at least heard of most of them.
You've never played some of the largest rpg's in recent history? Those are all great games.
Do you just play indy games?
I don't play single player RPGs much anymore.
I basically can't play first person shooters, which rules out a lot of popular games.
After the scam that was ESO, I'm not touching anything else from the same company. Once a scammer, always a scammer.
I liked the early Zelda games, but didn't pick up any for a number of years. Then I tried Twilight Princess, and the game was awful. It wasn't of the same genre as the early Zelda games in any meaningful sense. It was a long series of "see if you can randomly guess what the developers were thinking when they implemented this--and you can't move on until they do". Maybe there are people who like that, but I'm definitely not one of them.
I want to know why I have to click on "read the full story here" whenever I click on an article from System. Did I not click on the article with intent to read it? Why must I do it a 2nd time?

Actually, the topic is "Shank's" most impactful games. Not "NO ONE ELSE CAN ARGUE THESE ARE THE DEFINITIVE IMPACTFUL GAMES!" It does say "Opinion" in the headline.
‘Opinion,’ the most difficult word in the English language.

As is the word "impactful". Did video games really have an impact on his life?
Even if it impacted his gaming life, I think for something to have an impact it would have to shift his concept of gaming all together. Most of the games listed were variants of games that already existed.
It seems an example of impactful would be:
Dark Age of Camelot - it was the first real MMO I played and it had an impact on how I viewed games ever since.
Robo Recall - it was the first VR game that had that level of polish and it showed the potential of VR gaming. It had an impact on my views of how games could progress in the future.
Grand Theft V?... Witcher 2 and 3?... just graphically enhanced versions of the games that came before them. How is that impactful?
Are we talking about impactful on a purely personal level? Or are we talking about impactful on a cultural level?
Because if it's impactful on a cultural level, Fortnite and Pokemon Go objectively top the list. If it's impactful on a personal level only, anything goes.

Even on a personal level, what impact did Witcher 3 have over Witcher 2?
Your impactful list loses credibility without Fortnite on it
It depends on what he means by impactful. For example, Fortnite had ZERO impact in my life as a gamer, but it did to the industry. If i make a personal list of most impactful games Fortnite would not be in it because it's a personal list, not an industry analysis. But lets be honest, most of the impact caused by Fortnite was not because of the game itself, it was because of Twitch streamers. Otherwise the Save the World part of the game would have been just as impactful to the industry IMO.

For me it would be the story telling. I loved both games but Witcher 3's narrative reached far deeper. Most of it stuck in my head whereas in Witcher 2 only some specific pieces of the story only stuck in my head.
What better proof the genre is "dead' when a list of games with the most impact on the author's life doesn't include a single MMORPG.....the site's namesake no less.

So? I didn't say no one else can have their own list. Where would I have that authority? Go list away my trollish friend lol.
And btw, Shank can like whatever games he wishes. And I can then suggest ones he might have overlooked. See how this works?

I also haven't played many of the listed games.
Got 100 hours in Skyrim, didn't impress me much but at the time I was totally a diehard MMORPG gamer so perhaps I will revisit.
Bought all three Witcher titles 3 years ago but the two hours I spent on the first one was so underwhelming I have yet to break the seal on the others.
As for the rest, never played them. A friend's son lived with me a few years back and he did his best to impress me with GTO5 but I'm neither into driving cars (tanks are more my speed) nor being the "bad" guy.
In 2020 I'll be trying Disco Elysium, asked my son to give it to me for Christmas, but I only did so as a number of folks here seemed to enjoy it.

I think the first Witcher, while having many fine qualities, sort of falls down on itself with clunky controls and if I remember correctly, a LOT of running. I think the 2nd two really open it up. Of course, especially with the 3rd one, you have to remember it's not like Morrowind or Skyrim but more quest based so treat it like an open world Bioware game.
I think games like Skyrim, Oblvion, Morrowind are more for people who prefer exploring and "what's over there ... " Especially Morrowind in this front. Of course, it's an old game so unless one can get over the stiff animations and stiff combat, one will struggle.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
To say "its more important to recognize and acknowledge the bad.." is one of the greatest things wrong with society. People place more importance on complaining (wether due or not) than praise (when due). Society is already too negative and cynical.

Meah, I think this is a little overreacting.
So they messed up one game. Fallout 76. And they tried a card game. In truth, with both games they tried something different.
I won't be concerned until the games actually launch and we see what they are.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
