In the latest "Letter from the Producer LIVE" stream by the Final Fantasy XIV team, the developer announced a few interesting tidbits, namely the user count and the upcoming 2020-21 Fan Festival schedule. Additionally, some details of Patch 5.2 have been revealed as well.

If they have 18 million registered players and 10 million (heck, even 7 million) are subscribed, that's great.
But if they have 18 million registered (of which I'm one and I don't play as I don't like the game - well done as it is) and 500k are subscribed, that is still good but not really impressive given the 18 million they are throwing around.

Having 1/18th of the registered users as subscribers is totally believable, especially for a game this popular. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 2mil honestly. All that said, this registered users number is absolutely worthless in terms of metrics.
Still really good for a p2p mmo. But the 18million they are throwing is a marketing ploy. Would be like WoW advertising like what 250-300million accounts. Just makes your game look bigger.
The achievements show in Lodestone profile is set to private at default.
JP players use Lodestone to blog a lot, still only few of them will go into privacy setting to set achievements to public.
NA/EU players rarely use Lodestone at all. Many don't even know it exists.
You can only get achievement data through Lodestone and Lodestone only.
So the real active playerbase is much more higher.
