Red Thomas picks on the small kid at school and gives some of his thoughts on MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. Red pulls few punches as he explores where the game is now, where it might go, and what things are standing in the way of what he’d like to see.

Thank you for your time!
NPC animations are really bad.
The mission map should have a filter to allow you to search for missions within a specific distance that are related to a specific faction, the mission intel is supposed to be coming from the MBR, so why wouldn't they also be able to tell you who the employers are without having to click on each system in range, and then others a bit further out they can tell you there are missions there but without going there you don't know who for.
The campaign has some very hard mission even early, an example is one where you have to first defend a city, then destroy a fuel complex then defend against several waves of specialized bad guys, all in the same session, seems a bit much for a 4 party lance to take on.
Along with the campaign stuff, not following BattleTech's proven to work well idea and allowing you to make your MechWarrior so the story is about your character not some arbitrary guy who you don't feel connected to is a flaw that would have been easily overcome.
Having to walk all over the ship is odd to talk to NPCs, especially when in many case you have to navigate the stairs they put in to get to the bridge to do it.
Its hard to accurately give your scout mech orders to run out in front of the lance to gain intel, they want to stick with the slow mechs most of the time by default. There should have been some lance formation commands built in to allow for scouts etc.
I am still unsure why it costs you so much to have your techs install the components you already own on your mechs. I can see having it cost to purchase additional ammo and armor but both BattleTech and MechWarrior add this extra cost. Then in MechWarrior they add another multiplier when doing the repairs in a combat zone, what does this mean, your mech techs want more money to do their job when there, although in MechWarrior it appears that only 1 tech who operates automated machinery does all the repairs. Perhaps its because he doesn't get a salary so he charges you his going rate, which is even higher in a combat zone, when repairing your mechs??
Why don't mechs jump in combat??
I have found the only way to get the AI to jump is when my group is following me if I make it hard for them to do so by putting intervening terrain between me and them sometimes they will jump over it. Jumping in the table top game and BattleTech are major elements to game play, almost survival mode necessary for light mechs.
Lastly, damage, why do the mech take such a large amount of damage, I was playing last night an pumped countless SRM 4 packs and medium lasers in the rear torso of a Commando only to watch it do very little damage, eventually its legs got shot out by another lance mate.
So I guess at this point we hope that the studio makes some needed changes and additions but most likely I am holding out hope for the moders to fix a lot of these issues.
Too each their own, but the whole point of Mech games is to play giant fighting robots, explosions and carnage. Not play a window-simulator. I want to watch the robots, mine included.
To me it look like ~$50 value - or whatever the sum I'll pay for the game (which I'd never buy without 3rd person view).
Thank you for your time!
1) How can you have a mercenary company without any mechwarriors?
2) How can said mercenary company be led by a newb?
3) The 2 NPCs in the game seem to not be able to make eye contact, move, or do anything else.
4) Why are things spawning literally within 100 meters of me?
5) Why are there no roads between any habitations? I see wheeled vehicles. Do they not need roads in 3015?
6) 5-7 days to refit a weapon on a mech in an industrial zone? How is this even normal?
7) Why do we only get one lance to command?
8) Why can't we set waypoints on the map?
9) Why are there large rocks on every map? It's a little weird. I can understand in a mountainous area that there might be boulders, but many of these worlds are developed and I would imagine having tank size and greater boulders everywhere would be unrealistic.
10) You should get a 10% bonus for locking your camera to 1st person, because spotting all the randomly appearing tanks and srm launchers with the barely functional radar is atrocious.
11) The AI is horrible and watching my lance mates walk through buildings they are supposed to be defending just illustrates how little development was done.
In general I like the game more than dislike it, but man, I am getting absolutely sick and tired of buying full-priced software that relies on DLC to actually make it a finished product.
I know it is not the same but it feels like it was made to be played on mobile devices because the simulation aspect is just not there.
Ah hah! I know what it reminds me of.
The Shadowrun shooter that was from 2007. Basically they took the Shadowrun concept and dumbed it down and removed most of the role-playing elements.
MW5 seems to me to be dumbed down in the same manner. I guess when the kids run it on their 4k TV they can walk around the mech bay and marvel at the graphics.
What a salty, bitter pill I guess I hope future DLC and modders fix this.
I actually really like this mechanic a lot because of how realistic it is. Battlefield repairs are extremely expensive and they're usually substandard. That's not even counting the hazard pay or the availability of skilled temp labor you'll find in an industrial area. Yeah, I could go on for a really long time about all the reasons something like that would be a lot more expensive in a combat zone. If anything, they're probably being conservative in their estimates so they don't upset the player base.
"Only terrible people would ever play a MechWarrior game in 3rd person. I’m offended this option even exists in the game. If you use it, you should really spend some time reconsidering your life choices."
The comment about third person was totally unnecessary! Who are you to decide that people who play third person are wrong or shouldn't? Aren't you just an entitled POS.
All other Houses are totally inferior to Steiner and anyone who allies themselves with anyone other than the Commonwealth clearly has mental issues.
All true facts that I clearly believe 100% and am not joking at all about.
