So is GW2 still continuing development? I swear I read on here a few months ago that they weren't going to anymore or was that just expansions maybe.
Good question. Their last expansion was over 2 years ago and since then they had major layoffs, but maybe someone who activity plays can answer how content is being done. Like what do these episodes actually add to the game in terms of content? Just more story or actual areas/armor/etc? Since the player has always been scaling to the world in that game, I never understood how progression actually worked. Kind of the same with ESO and how the game tends to scale to the player. Scaling is just too lazy to me.
Between each expansion there is content dropped in the form of the "living story" episodes advancing the story, adding new maps, masteries, skins, etc. the expansion added new systems.
I would say content wise a full season of living story contained about 50% of the content of an expansion, without adding major new features, like gliding/masteries/mounts.
Going forward they have no plans to release another expansion, but will instead have greater content with the living story, which is now being called Sagas. The game has had 4 living story seasons, and 2 expansions, and is currently 2 episodes into the first saga.
There is not a typical progression where your character gets more and more powerful. You can become marginally more powerful over time through very challenging and costly legendary armor/infusions, but the challenging content comes down to mechanics and teamwork.
If you're not after tackling the 10 man raids, you can imagine the game as a sort of collection/achievement hunter type game. Of course there is also world vs world if pvp is your scene.
They abandoned fractals and raids just like they did with dungeons and add those embarrassingly easy strike missions. They talked about how they will add alliances etc in the coming months to wvw and how they will make drastic changes about it and after 8 months they announced "Warclaw balance!" for a whole kitten QUARTER! Holy shit this getting worse and worse. Even I didn't expect them to fall this much. This is beyond pathetic at this point...
I just don't believe in the game anymore, they just keep abandoning content while giving less and less new stuff. Being told there was no expansion coming was just the final nail in the coffin for me, saga is just a renamed living story and nothing more.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
