BDO has the highest spend per player (talking core playerbase not casuals).
Core players spend $300+ per month - many have spent above $5000 since launch
How - predatory RNG gear upgrade system that makes player spend all their money on blowing up $30 costumes for upgrade stones, and artisan memories (that just got upgraded to 5x durability recovery)
Hmm wonder why BDO devs upgraded them to 5x... oh that's right cha-ching!
BDO drains your wallet dry if your are a hardcore player
Do you mind showing your source for this information?
I don't agree with a lot of what DMKano posts here on this site. That being said, I am one of these players. Once you get to siege guild ready gear levels in BDO you are constantly dumping money into the game for nothing or very small gains. The way the AP system works where if you get just one more point of AP then you get 60 additional as a tier bonus is predatory.
Basically you can make around 1-2 billion silver per week in BDO. This is 1 or 2 attempts to PEN your gear. If you spend some money that can be 3-5 attempts. Keep in mind these are attempts with low probability of success 0%-5% depending on fail stack. Then there are accessory upgrades which if they fail the gear is gone.... poof ...
These may not be 100% accurate stats for today's BDO. I have not played in a year. Once I added up how much i had spent it was game over for me. Destroy all gear, uninstall game.
So you are trying to enchant to the highest level so you can be better at pvp?
Despite its over the top armor and weapons (which I'm fine with but it does somewhat skew the world a bit which seems designed to be a bit more realistic) the art design, graphics, animations, imagination are all amazing.
My opinion is that he west has always sucked at mmorpg's. At least visually. Eastern games in general seem to have a better attention to visual detail.
Being in the world of Black Desert is a far more immersive and enjoyable experience than any western mmorpg I've played. Well, short of Vanguard and even then, it didn't have the detail that the Eastern games have had.
As long a one doesn't play competitively and just enjoys the world then its fine.

West development of MMOs is 99% based on inde devs. Eastern MMO develpment is done mostly by AAA developers.
The graphics are what hook most people I imagine.....It looks like it will be a great game but the combat just wears you down in time....It's the same thing over and over and over......I made it to 56 with 4 different characters but no further.
It's a fun game. Unfortunately I do tend to get overwhelmed when I go back to playing it, as I dive down the hole of what gear and what order I need to get it in for my character and it's usually crazy looking images of arrows to different gear and setups.
Black Desert is the first real generational change since the last decade. from 2000-2009 there was little change in mmo game design. The two most progressive games from that era imho would be Vanguard SOH and Age of Conan. Vanguard showing the possibility of an uninstanced game world and Age of Conan like Spellborn, showing combat controls can evolve.
You do know that many, many games had uninstanced game worlds before Vanguard right?

Inaccurate. BDO drains mostly wow players who need instant gratification. Kind of like watching a gambler try and walk past slot machines. He know he has that dollar to put in it..... Yes the game has whales, what game doesn't .
Ironic to say WoW players need instant gratification while defending a game with upgrades in the cash shop. You are the cutest
To me AC was the greatest mmorpg of all time regardless of 'generation' I think it is funny when games today offer features that AC had it is looked at as new or moving the genre forward. By old school people usually mean EQ when looking at progressive people usually reference AC. It was,in a weird way, way ahead of it's time.
When I look at MMORPG's like AC and compare it to what's on offer today, when you consider the strides we've made in processing power, highspeed net etc. It makes me wonder what the hell happened.
Is it roadblocks in the coding?
I would have put money down that we'd be so much further than we find ourselves today when it comes to MMO's

That's probably because you are thinking that whatever Asheron's Call had was so awesome (or at least good) that everyone would want to emulate it.
You have to ask yourself why did Asheron's Call fail?
Or to put it another way, whatever game can make money for its company/publishers is going to be the trend setter for other games.
Now, you can make any game you want and say "as long as we make enough money to keep the doors open we're good!" But most companies, especially large companies are there to make money for their investors. They have to.
And even if you don't have investors, you need to make enough money to actually stay open and not rely upon the hope that "this year we don't close."
It's not processing power, it's not graphics, it's whatever will make enough money.
"Well that's not right, big companies blah blah blah."
Great, then people can start their own game companies. But then people DO start their own game companies and there are a litany of players who complain "graphics aren't great" or "I don't care about graphics but animations HAVE to be there."
And then the game doesn't launch or it launches but it's not AAA quality and doesn't get enough players.
The truth is that for a decent amount of people here, what they like is not going to make money. So it's not going to exist. Could there be an outlier? Sure. But we've yet to see one.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I am an hardcore player and never spent a dime on it.
And I have pretty much anything the game has to offer. Included a year worth subscription packs still sitting in my bank, which I bought with ingame currency.
BDO doesn't push the average player to use the Cash Shop, that's why, unlike Archeage, BDO is succesful.
Bingo baby!
No confusion- you are just trolling high praise as usual when it comes to BDO and PA lol
Of course I am praising. Black Desert is the mmo of the decade and Pearl Abyss are the best mmo devlopers in the world.
I ask myself the same question. In fact, after reading this post I installed and gave the game another shot. I don't make it 45 minutes into the game before I can't take anymore of it.
The character creation is top notch, but as soon as I step foot in game I'm smacked in the face with an overwhelming UI. Then it's just a matter of "follow the sparkley paths" over and over again.
At this point in my experience I can only assume it's so popular because...boobies.

So, you could just take what's offered to you at face value OR you could exercise some initiative and tailor the experience.
A lot of that UI 'crap' can be turned off. Yup, you guessed it, you can turn off those ridiculous rings that appear when you approach an npc, you can turn off that market stuff that crawls over the top of the screen.
You can turn down the flashy graphics a bit as well. Turn off people's pets. Change the "look" of how colors are displayed. For example, you could have a sepia toned image or very colorful or what they call "filmic" which is what I use which takes a lot of the color out, more Dark Souls like. "more" not exact mind you.
I don't remember if you can turn off the glowing paths but if you don't set a marker then it doesn't appear. You don't have to take their quests either.
It's not a sandbox game but you can try to play "as you want." and dabble here and there.
I would also suggest you can do this for many games. Now, the caveat to all of this is that if the things you CAN do are not fun then obviously there isn't anything for you.
However, sometimes it's very freeing to log in and get on a boat and tool around and not focus on xp or money. You won't be competitive but you might just have more fun.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
When I played it had some good design elements, enough to keep me initially into it. It also has some weird mini-games (that really arent fun), they are basically complicated messes you need to puzzle through. But even those could be overlooked. The gotcha in this game is the highly monetized crafting system. You have two choices, drive yourself insane upgrading your items, or fork over big piles of dough to bypass the insanity. Apparently there are allot of people bypassing the insanity.
BDO is probably the best looking MMO there is, and it doesn't look Korean, which is a plus.
I find your post an interesting counter-perspective to the usual posts around here. Some interesting information.
That being said, I don't agree with your point three entirely. BDO is probably the best looking MMO there is and it definitely looks western and not Korean in most aspects... until you get to the characters and the outfits and then it's 80% Korean with 20% Western influences.
The only three characters that look semi western are the Berserker, Wizard and Sorceress for some strange reason. The rest are all glamazons with perfect skin, Asian eyes and look to be anywhere from 12-18 years old at max, which is a very Korean thing to do.
Westerners tend to enjoy playing games as adult characters, Koreans really like to play super young looking characters. There's nothing wrong with that, but it does definitely set the game apart from being a western MMO.
Warrior/Valk, Witchard, Zerker, Guardian, Sorc, Ranger, Archer and Dark Knight are all very Western inspired. Most female classes can be made to look in their 20s+. The exceptions being the pedo classes Tamer and Shai.
There was definitely a flurry of weeb classes in the second year of the game though.

It's a case of "Kano says" I know plenty of long time BDO players who pretty much only spend money on value packs and the occasional costume or other trinket from the store. Nowhere near $300 a month lol. Of course they're also not PvPers.
More on topic:
It's because of what a lot of people here already said; it's a visually stunning game, with hands down the best character creator. Avatar wise anyway, when it comes to outfits, it loses points thanks to a very limited mix-matching system compared to MMOs like FFXIV and high dependency on the Pearl Shop for anything cosmetic.
Other strong points are;
The action combat is fun.
The node & life skills systems are pretty in depth.
When it comes to cons;
PvE is pretty mind numbing. All you do is grind. And the fancier activities that they have added, like the Altar of Blood instance, are completely not worth it unless you're ridiculously geared (600-ish GS).
It is most definitely P2W. If you're considering dipping your toes into PvP on BDO and think you will be even remotely competitive without spending tons of money, think again. The RNG gear upgrade system that is intricately tied to the Pearl Shop will make your life absolutely miserable, and you'll be a punching bag for all the whales to steamroll.
As much as I love the game, I won't pretend it's not deeply flawed in some ways.
