The problem for pvp players in the mmo setting is we haven't had one of those at all. The ones we have gotten have been riddled with bugs and not supported at all. Which is where DF fell and when people realized that the population plummets.
I think trying to blame bugs for the failing of every single modern PvP MMO is just being flat out dishonest on why they really failed.

Reality is, the population plummets in these PvP games because no one is going to grind in a game where someone else can take away all your work.
It may not be the only reason but your reason isn't exactly the whole truth, a small percent will leave because of that but most got into them knowing the consequences. My experience with pvp mmos has been just that. Promises and failed delivery, Its like they get this big idea but don't know how to follow through. Like most games the community will offer solutions but most times the devs don't listen to the community(not just a pvp game problem) But the lack of support in a pvp game is a lot more stinging than that of a pve game.

Every pvp game should set in place a level cap. if you are +3 levels higher than your target you

cannot attack them unless they attack you first. if you are +/- 5 levels no attacks can be initiated

from either side. and make it pvp disabled until mid-level giving every player at least a chance to

develop defenses. all games that have went the open world pvp have failed miserably at this. and

they always close up shop after a few years. if you want to invest your time into a game it is

always a safer bet to go with a pve game or one with the 2 types of server apart from each other.

as the pve servers population will carry the few pvprs for several extra years in game revenue.

These guys have created a pve server for those who don't want to deal with pvp.

Best way is to leave pvp right out of the rpg,it never works anyhow and the way devs are so incompetent,it will be a very long time before it does work.
It takes work to create scripted npc clans or single npc's to create the ever fear of danger outside of the typical group camp killing.

It is just sooo easy for a dev to flag players for pvp and be done with it.You create a hostile community like that ,a terrible way to design a game.Way better to create a game where players help each other, solve puzzles, quests, npc's etc etc.
I heard mention of minecraft..zzzzzzz,way out dated and boring, you can pay half the price for Atlas get 10x better graphics and build anything anywhere you want as well having pets,breeding,water/ships etc etc, there is no need to ever pay for  Minecraft with a much better product out there.

There is a way to make pvp work in it's purest form but you still need to keep some realism, some sense of justice. It would take a decent amount of scripting npc's,again most devs are too lazy but it would work to make pvp viable. How is that done?Well simple, npc officers/sheriff's,police,guardians ,whatever you want to call them. You could create a lot of depth in this area ,with individual towns having heir own justice system as well a national justice system.Once reported through various avenues,a player killer would be on a list of wanted struggle to get around town to town and even on the open road where there would be lawmen on the lookout.
Aside from this basic idea,i know what else needs to be added like various forms of communication like information sent by  perhaps stagecoach,so if the player killer wants to avoid being a wanted all over in ever town he would need to ransack that first stagecoach to make sure word doesn't travel around. However the player could still travel town to town and report you.Various penalties, with even ways to redeem your crime perhaps through large fines or via services.

Game design in a mmorpg should not be a LAZY design,it takes some effort to make a game great fun to play and not just some simple pvp playground.Anyone that ever played Silkroad remember a system where npc bandits would spawn and attack your caravan,so you needed to hire help to protect your trade caravan.

Best idea, you see a LAZY pvp game design, don't pay them a single cent, stay away and let the game rot.

So pvpers are back to trying to figure out a way to get easy targets pve'ers to play their games?

People who want to PvP are spoiled for choice currently. There are so many games built around fun and fair pvp. And yet, people who want to PvE in MMO's are seemingly sought after to go play PvP MMO's . . . it's so weird that they don't want to. I just can't figure it out.

Go play a PvP game that's fun to play and everyone is playing with the purpose of PvP'ing? Or go play an MMO so you can be PvP'ed while you're not interested in PvP'ing.

It's just so complicated. No wonder no one has solved it over the last couple decades. How can we convince people to come do non-PvP related activities so that we can kill them while they engage in those activities. I mean, I just want to PvP someone who's distracted or otherwise unable to react, is that too much to ask? Sure, I could PvP against all these other people who claim to want to PvP, but no one shows up . . . it's so frustrating.

There's definitely a lot of us, I have thousands of friends and they all say they want the same thing. So why don't these games succeed? Look at EVE, it's like the best game ever and I'd totally play it, but you have to be a ship. Who wants to play the best game ever if you have to be a ship, amirite? I wish they could just make the same game, but I get a sword and my low-level vicitim opponent can mine rocks while I camp them.

What we should do is come up with a system where *someone*, who is very naughty and kills people PvE'ing, gets a contract on them and others can come "PvP" them by showing up with a larger number of people. Cause if beating up a lower level player is bad, then ganking someone with numbers is good! Then they'll call their friends who will drive home from work immediately and join in so that there's a huge brawl. Then, they could all fight in the same area for a long time! Hell, it could be a common area where fighting always happens! Maybe the devs could put a door there so and even number of people can enter that area to avoid the whole ganking thing. The ground will be bathed in the blood of battle! Like, like . . . a, um . . . battleground! Yeah, we'll have even teams of people in a favorite area who fight each other, and no PvE'ers there so they don't accidentally get killed, and no ganking cause the teams are the same size. And since we'll always spend our time there, but still want new gear, they can offer points and rewards for fighting! Damn, this is genius.

Didn't they change the rules in the game so that you cannot PvP without consenting to it. It is isn't FFA anymore from what I gather.

I believe they enlarged the areas where players can be safe from ganking, but theres still lawless regions which are wide open.

There is a player run server that is all pve. Hope something or other. I tried to get on it last night but it's still running on the old client and they are in the process of testing the new one. Only way to get on it is to use the previous client.

Yep.  I was ganked several times in the outer areas,  and it was enough for me to say that is enough.  No PVE servers, not paying anything else.  Will just use the private PVE servers and enjoy the game there.  You think they would just do it, but I think they are bent on failing.

Why would you play an open world pvp game if you don't like pvp?

    Have you played at all?

I played on the one main US server to support the game, but there has been many request to simply create an additonal PVE only server for user who prefer that.  They force you into that mixture unless you get a Citizens Pass and go to the private made servers which you can play PVE.  I like the game, the crafting, but the limitation of mixing the PVE and PVP with the risk vs. reward is not worth it, at least to me.

When players were given the choice in Ultima Online of Trammel or Felucca, Trammel became overpopulated and Felucca, well, yeah, sort of became a desolate place. If Legends of Area wants to be a Open World PVP Full loot game, have at it, the search for a new Sandbox PVE game like the former Star Wars Galaxies was continues.

Cheers and have fun! Note: If I was the developer, I would cover both audiences and maximize profits, but I am not currently a stakeholder, so good luck.
