Actually, I have a decent guess as to what happened. Astellia will sometimes load low-resolution stuff first to have something to display, then update it to the higher resolution version later. When in the game proper, I generally don't see it, but it's very obvious at the character selection screen.
If the original poster saw the low resolution version at the character selection screen and didn't wait a few seconds for the high resolution version to load before giving up on the game, that could lead to exactly the original complaint. Or if he's just got a slow computer, such as one that tries to run games off of a hard drive, that could make it take longer. Alternatively, if he tried running the game at low settings, that could do it.

Yeah it has a weird low resolution load problem sometimes but in general the graphics never looked washed out for me, just low resolution for maybe 5 to 10 seconds. My PC isn't working or I would test it but I vaguely remember settings in the options that add blur / HDR effects?
I guess there's people who view graphics above all... aka graphic whores.
If a game is fun, graphics shouldn't matter as much. Obviously not speaking about this game but in general.
Wow! You're so wise and smart and...yeah. Maybe you could use your big smart brain and explain to me why we can't have really great graphics and great gameplay in the same game...? Please and thank you!
Bloodaxes is correct, not every studio can afford top notch graphics.
I prefer great graphics but even more I prefer great art design. However, I can still play games that aren't cutting edge as far as looks.
I've played lots and lots of games that had bad graphics and great gameplay, Anarchy Online is a great example of that. Everyone has played MMOs with ugly graphics...that's the nature of this hobby (if you've been doing it for as long as I have, that is). That said, this is the year 2020 - the age of VR - it's time to move on. I'm all about VR and that's where I want things to go, at least in the MMO space...and the faster we get there the happier I'll be (even if we have to crush a few indie developers in the process ). I'm not a fan of indie MMO development in state that we find it in today; I think it's nothing but an unforgivable waste of time, money, effort, and talent...squandered on projects that will never see the light of day.
There is one, and only one, indie development team that I support, and that is Abstract Era Entertainment, because they're the only ones (as far as I'm aware) who are doing the smart thing, and that is: they are developing a MMO that is completely moddible...from top to bottom. The name of their MMO is 'Seconds From Silence', and it will allow highly talented modders from around the globe to add super-high quality content to their base MMO...so, instead of having a puny/insignificant team of 15 developers working on a project, that frankly, is too big for them to handle, they can be working on entire quest-lines or even adding new mechanics to that game. See how that works? There would still be a cash shop, of course, but it would be full of thousands of products (mods) with all of the proceeds going directly to the talented people who created it...instead of those sleazy parasite scummos - who don't have a creative bone in their bodies - in those giant corporations.
I haven't played this game. But when I read your post, I became curious and went and looked at uploaded screenshots. They weren't great, to be sure, but I didn't think they were terrible. Just disappointing. My two cents.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Unreal 3 engine does not make blurry and washed out games. My guess is you have some sort of driver issue with your video card. Or its just bad artwork. Don't blame the engine.
Here are the capablilites of the Unreal 3 engine. And this link is noy a pre-render scene, you can run this map in the developer tools.

All the rest of my games run just fine on my $5,500. computer. Thanks for your concern, though.
What are your specs?
My husband and I bought our computers from Falcon Northwest. They each have AMD 24 core CPUs, Nvidia 2080 ti graphics cards, 2 TB SSd x2, 32 GB of RAM...plus we bought 2 Alienware 34" 3440x1440 monitors.

In my game the environmental graphics were terrible. Blurry and washed out, as I described...but the UI was clear and crisp and colorful.
You mean a screenshot? No, I don't...I was trying to get the issue sorted out as quickly as I could so that I wouldn't go over the refund time limit, I just forgot to do it.

Wow, you guys got the best of the best. I built a comp 6 months ago and it cost about $1,900 without a monitor. If i had gotten one with the specs i had from a company, it would have been $3,500+.
Next time you may want to check out pcpartpicker, get all the compnents you want, and take it to a computer store to build for you. May have saved you several thousand total.
But more power to you, lucky you and your spouse enioy the same hobby.

There are a bunch of issues with Astellia. Graphics isn't one of them. The world looks good. DX9 is outdated, sure, but there are games that still make it look good.
Out of all the people I've heard complain about Astellia, none of them complained about the graphics....

We thought that it would be best to have someone else build these for us, and then we'd just upgrade them ourselves later on...well, my husband will upgrade them; I'll stand behind him and watch.
You sound like the type of person who really enjoys getting involved in every aspect of the hobby...I think that's just awesome! I'll be honest, though, computers are very intimidating to me...I wouldn't dream of building a computer of my own; all those wires and cables hanging everywhere...OMG!
If you can follow a recipe to bake a cake you can follow a guide to build a computer. Try it sometime. Build something cheap if you're truly intimidated, and use it as a home theater PC. Could do it for a few hundred.

Well i tried to put it together and either shorted the mother board or it was defective.
Either way, PC part picker is great it will tell you of compatibioity issues and im a huge dumbass with electronicd. In future, you can build that comp of yours for probably 3.5k and then pay a comp shop 100 to 200 bucks to put it together.

So, I bought Astellia today and Wow what a disappointment! The graphics are terrible - very blurry and washed out - and I know why: those crooks are using Unreal engine 3 and DirectX 9 for this game! I violated my own rule - never buy a video game 'til you've investigated it first! Hopefully I'll be able to get a refund because of that shady shit with the packages on Steam.
Edit: I got the refund from Steam, even though I had played the game for more than 3 hours...apparently, they've had so many complaints about this game that they were just issuing refunds as quickly as they could, without regard for their own return policy.
just proves how important it is to do your research if you watched videos you wouldn't have wasted time and money on this pile of crap that everyone else was aware about. it's a shame refunds are possible so bad consumers will just carelessly jump into every trash cash grab mmo and encourage developers to just keep the mass produced mmos coming
See how blurry the environment is on both sides of the image? And the blurry texture on the rock. That, plus the fact that in the beginner area the "sun" was shining and it washed everything out. Could you take a screenshot with the UI on, please. The difference between the UI and the environment is very noticeable.

You're preaching to the preacher. I share your concerns...my husband and I attended a gaming conference back in the early 2000's; there was a panel of three of the top game developers there and, boy, did they have some choice words for those of us in attendance...they blamed gamers for the poor state of game development, basically saying that most gamers are greedy, lazy, and spineless...they will buy anything in their greedy pursuit of pleasure. So, as a result, the greedy developers/publishers, and the greedy banksters who finance them, have zero motivation to produce really great games.
As for me, I had a momentary lapse in judgement...the game offers you the ability to have five lollies as fighting companions! FIVE LOLLIES, fighting with you...I'm only human!

Even Newegg.com had computer packages where they spec out compatibility between parts for you. All you need is someone to snap it all together for you and get the operating system running.
I somewhat know my around a computer, but it's not a field I enjoy enough to be good at it in case I run into software problems. So I have my friend do it for me and its easy for him.
I know at least 10 people that can do it..... so I'm sure you do to.... It's not hard for them.
According to steam reviews (didnt go thru them all, but a few). With a mixed state of positive vs negative, it seems to border along the lines of bad fps or people unable to launch it at all. I do not see anyone talk about poor graphics or cash shop.
This is a qoute from one of the reviews ",if u dont like the blur turn off dof and post processing in graphics options..." so maybe that was your issue?
I feel like your review is not solid and hope no one follows it and researches it. I looked up on youtube, looks nice to me. I just bought Hades, so not planning on buyin it myself, maybe down the road. I had too many rough starts on games just releasing (Every WoW xpac, Martyr, etc)

It's really a question of whether your time or your money is scarcer. If you and your husband are both working 60 hours per week and have a combined income of $500k/year, then buying a prebuilt like you did makes a ton of sense. You'll get something nice, and the only problem will be the price tag. If you're both working part-time, minimum wage jobs, then the added expense of a prebuilt makes no sense at all.

I see the blur that you describe in that particular screenshot, but I don't see it in game. I went and took a screenshot just now, but can't upload it to this site, as it's too big. Instead, here's a small portion of it, taken at the left edge of the screen.
It's tilted because of perspective effects and being at the edge of the screen. But it's not blurry at all, or at least the original isn't. Posting it to this site might make it blurry depending on how the site encodes it and rescales it.
The blur that you're seeing is probably either a problem of choosing bad graphics settings or this site's encoding. It's not a problem of the game itself.

Even with today's technology you will NEVER have a MMO with as good of Graphics as a Single Player game. It's just not possible. Even with today's technology it isn't possible to render potentially hundreds of avatars that are as high Poly and detailed as a Single Player Game's avatars would be.
