Is this game worth playing for someone who never tried it before? I am in desperate need of non fantasy MMO and how it looks only hero ones are left for me to try. Done w EvE, Secret World, Swtor or even Anarchy for my non fantasy online kick so wont be going back to them.
it's free worst case you lose time. i personally really like this game, there is something really unique about it when it comes to pve and aoe'ing packs of mobs that i've never experienced in another mmorpg (only in marvel heroes did i get similar sense of going ham in a pack of monsters) haven't played on homecoming servers in a while, dunno if newbie zones are still populated (which might be a problem to find a group to level with).
Wait googled and this Homecoming is private server. So game is not alive? I mean it was shut down and no official servers? No updates?
Also is there any other non fantasy MMO / hero game out there worth trying?
All the servers are non-official. But they do get updated, and in the case of Homecoming, fairly regularly. If you want to play, then play. I wouldn't worry about it being "official" or not.

homecoming servers are private servers but they are talking with ncsoft in order to make them 'legit' (as in not official but with ncsoft blessing from what i gathered) and since they haven't been shut down after all this time, i'm gonna assume that ncsoft are ok with them running the game for now. they have an active dev team releasing updates and new content just like official servers used to back in the days.
not sure if there are any other mmorpg worth trying more than city of heroes when it comes to hero mmos. as for non fantasy, i was gonna suggest secret world but you already played it and you seem to have played all the interesting ones already
City of Heroes is great for quick teams and lots of fireworks when you kill masses of bad guys. It's not so good if you are looking for a story-driven MMORPG. There are bits of a story, but it doesn't drive the play.

DC Universe Online and Champions Online are the other two Super Hero MMORPGs you can try. Both are free to play, and then they both have different payment models if you want to spend money. DCUO is more action-y combat, CO is tab-based targeting style. CO has incredibly diverse character creation and power sets. DCUO isn't too far behind. DCUO is still receiving new content slowly, CO probably won't see much new stuff.
Both are free, both are entertaining. So can't hurt to check them out. I'd still suggest checking out City of Heores though.
COH is a great game .. Yes it is an older game but the gameplay is great. Yes it is on a private server and that may be an issue for some but beats the content stuck behind a paywall like DCU and Champions. I still see a lot of people on so it still is going well.
If you need a superhero fix .. COH is the best way to go as it gives you everything you could want and no cost.

The source code for CoH had been floating around privately for a while but became public last year. Since then, a few private servers have popped up. Homecoming is the largest with the most active community and devs AFAIK. The devs have been hard at work bringing the code to modern standards, fixing bugs, balance changes and working on new content for the game.
CoH is the grandfather of super hero MMOs and to this day still has one of the best, deepest character customization systems in an MMO. You even have the option of playing a hero, villain or vigilante faction.
It's worth trying since it's completely free. The Homecoming server isn't even F2P, FREE. The team can't legally charge money for it (now anyway) and only open up a short funding session for server costs every month (which usually meets it's goal in minutes, and then they turn off donations). They are very transparent about where the money goes and their goals for the game.
It's a pretty small download, too. You don't have anything to lose from trying it except some time.
