So..who’s playing this game currently that they even bother with “Friends System”?
Dev chat:
"Hey we thousands maybe millions of players now that the game has launched. You think we should start work on some group finder stuff?"
Meanwhile on the forums:
"Wtf which idiot thought a game didn't need a group finder at launch. What? Some idiot called @blazingcut ? Which idiot hired them?"

It was possible to group before, just less user friendly. What idiot would implemented a top of the class group finder before making a game with enough contents for a larger population? Tha's what happen in 2020 with implementation of prison and theater of War.
Sounds like it did not stop +1.2 million individual backer to understand the concept
The big thing I see from this is that they are planning to tie the in-game friends list with their website's friend list. I don't see that this really gains an awful lot, unless they are planning lots of downtime for the game.
But I will predict that the in-game friends list is also likely to be used for other purposes, such as ties into social media and/or marketing info. Not only can they sell their customer list to other companies, but they can charge a bit more for the added association information provided by the friends list. I know if I were running a company, I'd be interested to know that when Joe bought my product, Joe's friends might also buy my product. Viola! Targeted marketing opportunity. Probably complete with multiple ways to contact these potential customers directly.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

If you were running a company in Europe you would know about GDPR.

It's a milk machine hooked to the teat of the gullible.

It just gets easier.
