there is a reason counter strike has been alive for so long when it comes to competitive shooters : it is simple, it rewards good aim, it is easy to balance and it is incredibly clean and easy to spectate.
this game, just like overwatch, will very likely be on the opposite of that spectrum : messy, impossible to balance and awful to spectate.
lets hope it will be at least be fun to play and not frustrating like overwatch.

This is meant to and will compete with CS:GO as a tactical shooter in the esports space. It's not an arcade shooter like OW.

and it will fail miserably if they intend to compete with csgo. might work vs overwatch though since the folks at actiblizzard seem to have lost it.
fps + abilities = shitshow to balance = poor competitive value but great casual fun if handled correctly.
Who the hell wants to play a game filled with those green clouds?
That's an immediate turn off...
Thought the same. Looks like scuffed cs:go made sex with Overwatch and squeezed this abomination out through its dated loins. I don't know how much overlap there is between people who like OW and people who like cs:go but apparently Riot thinks it's a lot. I personally enjoy one and find the other really boring.
I think it looks pretty decent for an alpha, at least it's not an early access. There's a reason why Riot has been successful even though their biggest title is free to play.

Riot is good at balancing their game. CSGO is awful compared to what kind of numbers they could be bringing in.
Riot knows this, and thats why they know they can take over then Tac shooter competitive scene. They know what players want and they know how to deliver it. Valve doesn't.
Cartoons, Bad animation, FortNite wanna be, Clone, Clone, Clone. Don't we have enough of this garbage? Was this type of game in very developer's class or something. Do you even have the ability to think for yourself? Nothing says cash grab more than that intro...
Its not a fortnite wanna be is not a BR. You actually don't know anything about shooters.
This game is going to be good. Riot made League, its great. Same with Legends of Runaterra. Everyone here should be singing praise about the company being one of the only few still making good products without awful monteization schemes.

I don't see Counter-Strike being mentioned before you mentioned it. I know I've seen somewhere being mentioned as Counter-Strike's killer, but that's probably clickbaits for more traffic.
I agree with you that Counter-Strike is good, because of what it is, but this game can't really be compared to either Counter-Strike or Overwatch.
But there is a whole subgenre of these F2P FPS games that has existed probably as early as 2006 with Asian games like Crossfire, Combat Arms, Soldier Front, Alliance of Valiant Arms and more... after that Western games like Blacklight Retribution and Dirty Bomb entered the scene, there was also one Korean FPS very similar to Valorant - called Ghost in the Shell First Assault - the game featured precise gunplay, weapon customization and iconic GITS characters with skills, but the most major difference is that each character only had one skill.
I played some 150-160 hours of CS:GO when it went F2P, but I can't get into it, the lack of weapon customization, characters with skills and other perks bore me to death. Same with Paladins and Overwatch - their gameplay is too weird and there are too many limitations for my taste.
This subgenre is the middle ground between both.
Many people have never played those games and the closest things they can attribute to Valorant are Counter-Strike and Overwatch, because they don't know anything else. But that's false, this whole subgenre had its own mass (but still niche) following and still has it to this day. For the people that played those games, Valorant is just another one of those and that's not a bad thing. I loved playing those games over games like Counter-Strike, Paladins, Team Fortress or Overwatch and I still do.
So Valorant is right up my alley, it's just one of those niche games that I used to play for the last 10 years or so.

Disturbing how many haters there are on here.
If by "haters" you mean people that don't share your opinion, then yeah, that happens a lot here.
Hmm, a site named MMORPG isn't exactly awash with FPS shooter fans?
Go figure.
In my book the entire shooter genre is of no use, only one small step above....sports games....ugh.

This game looks actually very clean and abilites looks very clean too, even quite bad at some point but definitely it's not mess like OW to watch...and balance will be very possible with economy system imo
Looks like they are going after Crossfire crowd with those low end graphics.
Make sure the game cab run on 486 with a voodoo card! - check
True, they are targeting massive chinesse market too to compete with Crossfire. but let's be honest low end spec online games are mostly the most popular overall, because you can target more ppl...btw it's perfectly understandable for older ppl to pass on this one, cause cs:go like shootings + cartoon is hard combo to deal with....I already discussed this with some friends 30+ and they can't keep up with cs:go style games (they are bad) + they hate any cartoon like games cause they are MENS and not children
Game looks more than promising, 128 servers are big deal too, it's Riot games so esport scene can be big and can work cause League works so well for years, it will probably play very smooth with high FPS too, no RNG, pure skill...only thing I dislike so far are graphics of abilities I feel it looks so stupid rn
Next thing is I'm actually surprised why they decided to use this video as it's bad quality overall and there are much better gameplay footages already...and let's all remember how CS:GO or OW looked like in closed beta for example, it was bad, even cs:go was horrific...so if this game will do fine, just imagine what Riot can do with it over the years....just look at LoL what a game it became since closed beta

I totally agree, the game has solid gunplay and skills to spice things up. It's a perfectly fine game and people complaining how it's generic or bland-looking, they are just way over their head with expectations and constant need to complain about everything all the time.
I swear there is not a single article or any sort of announcement of a new game that there isn't this group of people that complain for the sake of complaining, just because they can, even though their complaints are baseless and stupid like in the case of Valorant.
Overwatch isn't the first arena shooter and Counter-Strike isn't the first tactical shooter, they are also pretty generic games, good but generic.
I can see Valorant making a spot for itself and attracting a big enough playerbase, because I, for one, am someone who's been looking to play a traditional FPS game with skills that has normal game modes involving bomb defusal, TDM and others.
The game looks fine and I commend RIOT that they decided to tone down the graphics and make it available to people with weaker PCs although this isn't an issue for me anyways.
And before I start sounding like a total Valorant shill/white knight, I must say I have my complaints with the game - the art style direction of the weapons looks too different from the art direction of the characters and maps which look too cartoony for my taste. It gives me this Overwatch/Paldin feel where characters look like over-the-top with their facial expressions Pixar character that can get you "mentally drowned" just by looking at their faces for a few seconds.
I'm also skeptical about having so many abilities and the keyboard keys that are being used are all over the place. I don't know how will I adjust to so many abilities and if they keep adding new characters with time, it can become like MOBAs which I don't play exactly because they have too many characters and I don't want to learn them all. The only MOBA I play is LoL with only one character against AI and that's when I'm bored with absolutely everything else.
And lastly, I complain a lot too about many new announcements for upcoming games, so this is actually the only announcement/upcoming game which is exactly what I wanted to play for a while and there just wasn't anything like that. That's why it annoys me when people complain about it with the dumbest reasons when they obviously have never played a game like this (I've played some, but they are no longer available) and their complaints are completely baseless and think that certain aspects are OP or will ruin the game when nobody has even played it yet...

The same people will play csgo and this. Riot isn't afraid of balance. Globally this game will have a larger playerbase than CSGO in time.

How about a third person hero shooter for a change?
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

The only real third person hero shooter I can think of was Gigantic. RIP.
