Honestly I think it would, we need more sports mmos. I think boxing works because like a normal RPG, you can create your boxer, fight up the ranks against non-npcs, and eventually win a championship title. I think if a software company gave this serious thought it could work out. I could see a 1-2 million subscriber base easy. Theres lot of boxing fans out there. Give it a Fight Night type of control scheme, using a controller is manditory, and that could be a bonus of buying the game, a free controller. I really think this would work out and i'd love to see it.

I can definitely see boxing as an online game. But how can you create an immersive world based on boxing?
I just ran into a group of 5 player boxers on a street corner ready to gank anyone who comes by. Thus I sent a help message on the guild channel to see if I could get a group of fellow guildmates to help me. Thankfully our level 70 boxer was available. He just learned the powerful 5 punch combination at level 70 that should do in these lower level ganking boxers. Took them out in about 15 seconds and received the neat looking striped boxing shorts and a pair of level 45 boxing gloves with the steel inserts (a very good rare drop).
You can't create a sports MMO besides those text fantasy games. Sports are played and it's a game in it's self. You can't make a game inside a game inside of a game which is what you're trying to do if your create a MMORPG.
I think the word you're looking for is Multiplayer. Since there is no persistant world, the game would be a Multiplayer with an online leader board. Not an mmo.
A Work in Progress.

Just not enough depth to support playing for 100 hours a week (which is what most serious MMOG players will do).
