Perhaps my way of thinking is different but for me that would be the point where I leave. I could be soft but the effort I put into a game being wiped out isn't going to make me want to under any circumstances to continue.
That's largely the point being made.
Eve Online is such that players will at some point have their resolve tested by adversity. Some will be pushed away by that. Those that remain are the ones truly committed to the play and experience the game provides.
There is also an allusion of how shared adversity enhances the sense of fellowship and community in a game as well.
I haven't played Eve, but from what I've heard of it I can see both being true, or at least understand how they could be seen as true.

Loss or the possibility (even certainty in many cases) of losing important people or things is a major part of life. (Actually even places can be lost. Or so transformed over time as to become unrecognizable. In comparison with the place we may have known in our youth and/or younger years.)
Why can't an MMORPG be like that? Why must all MMORPGs be a steady, one-way ladder to power? With no possibility of regression.

On 29 April 2020. A day that shall live in infamy. For, of course, I had no authority whatsoever to enforce my views/suggestions/preferences on other posters. In that thread or any other.
Anyway, after that, I noticed that ChildoftheShadows started trying to tell me and others what to do.
But alas, his power seems to be somewhat limited in this regard. However, anyone is free to be annoyed by his Hall Monitor-type behavior if they wish.

The theory that says struggling is what brings people together is actually correct.
Unfortunately he takes it to the extreme.
Once someone loses everything, they just quit, there is no point in seeking help of others, because they have nothing else to protect.
His theory can be applied to situations like Corpse Runs in EQ, where people help each other to recover their shit.
You have to intervene before the loss is permanent to activate this Social behaviour.
But when the loss is already happened, most people will quit.
With developers who don't understand how social bonding work, I understand why EVE is losing players.

Interesting. I might even agree with you. Although I've never played EVE and have no real urge to ever do so. More because I'm not fascinated by the setting (or excited about spending all my time aboard spaceship) than because I had any former compunctions about playing an OWPVP/PVE Sandbox MMORPG. But now that you mention it, I can see how being able to catastrophically lose almost everything of importance without any means of preventing it would be a major turn off to a lot people.
Which may also be why a lot of people totally rebel against the idea of Permadeath in MMORPGs.

I read the article and made a comment. I presume that the point of the article was to open out a discussion. I made my point of view known. What I find strange is your opinion that just because I might not play the game I'm therefore not entitled to share my point of view. That isn't how a discussion board works. Well, these days you do not have to. Thats why they introduced skill injectors.
(In game) Money for time. Of course, getting that money also takes time. Or someone gives it to you.
Might be worth mentioning that to achieve this they are nerfing a lot of the income and resource streams players use to replace losses. They didn't just suddenly make the game mechanics better, they just made it harder for everyone.
Or you know, just drop some cash on PLEX and replace those losses.

Well, these days you do not have to. Thats why they introduced skill injectors.

Err, or you spend real world money to buy PLEX, selling them for in game money, ISK which then is used to buy skill injectors.
Interestingly enough, they sell skill extractors in the cash shop, or at least they used to.

If things in Eve haven't inflated to the point of being prohibitively expensive, more people would be inclined to go out and yolo ships for experience.
But most people you face are usually good at what they do, invest RL money or have access to ISK fountains from established groups. Not saying that's a bad thing, many people worked up to that point.
But the new player experience, is awful because of inflation. Most players are forced to mine and sell minerals, farm the same PVE missions day in and day out, for what, to go out and blow their months of work on 1 ship that they'll lose in 30 seconds?
I know there's a few groups that'll try to help new players, but they still have to do the same thing. CCP's industry meddling and market manipulation and poor balancing has made it much more difficult now than it ever has been to just yeet a few ships here and there for content.

Turns out at the start of 2018 the CPI in 2018 was lower than in 2004.
I doubt any other MMORPG has as much information collected and analyzed by its dev team as EVE / CCP.

I am surprised this game had the success it did....Point and click movement, no avatar, free for all PVP......These are all things that scare most people away.....I tried it on a free trial and knew right away it just wasn't my thing....Listening to the people in chat was scary.
I have been playing MMOs's since MUDS and ROMS. Meridian 59 etc. So to say i have a lot of experience with different types of games. Eve is a game where items dont count for much in a fight. experience and knowledge of the game is way way more valuable. But new people come to the game, spend hours getting money to get into a larger ship with more pricey items thinking the "Equipment" will outweigh the lack of experience only to die and lose it all. The Pocket warriors always quit and never understand what happened or why. If you take the time to actually learn eve and play with other like minded people in a small corp, large allilance or whatever you are much better off and can learn those things that got you killed in a 3 bil Machariel by a 10 mil frigate. Eve is unique in this way. Also, the Loss of the items spurns on the market which is a player driven market. You need the loss for these types of markets to work. Anything else is short sighted.

The movement you described is 1 of three ways to move. So again you treated Eve like all other MMO's and Eve is like other MMOs but also has many components or things to make it unique.

This is how I feel about games like UO, Albion, etc. The movement and control is something I could never get immersed in. However in Eve most of the movement is actually not done through point and click, it's done through "select a destination and click go to" which to me fits a space simulation very, very well. When I think of a space future and how ships will pilot and combat Eve is more like Star Trek than Star Wars, which is also based much more on reality.
